Lake bank filtration at Nainital,India: water-quality evaluation   总被引:6,自引:2,他引:4  
There are different water-supply schemes in Uttarakhand, India to tap the water from streams, rivers and lakes. At Nainital, seven tube-wells (depths 22.6–36.7 m), located at a distance of <100 m from the lake, are being used to abstract (1) lake water after passage through the soil and (2) subsurface water/groundwater flowing towards the lake. Water samples from the lake and tube-wells were analyzed in monsoon and non-monsoon periods from 1997 to 2006. Total dissolved solids, EC, alkalinity and hardness were found to be marginally greater in tube-well waters. The difference in hydrochemistry of tube-well water was mainly due to variation in flow regimes during monsoon and non-monsoon periods. Results clearly indicate that lake water as such is not potable as it contains unacceptable levels of organic matter in terms of COD (~44 mg/L), coliforms (~15.6 × 104 MPN/100 mL) and nutrients. Coliform bacteria and COD have not been detected in any of the tube-well water samples over the years. Lake water, treated by sand filters did not conform to drinking water standards. These investigations have led to the closure of the treatment facility and installation of two tube-wells in addition to the existing five tube-wells.
Résumé  Il existe divers projets d’alimentation en eau dans l’état d’Uttarakhand, Inde, afin de capter l’eau de ruisseaux, de rivières et de lacs. A Nainital, sept puits tubés (profondeur de 22.6–36.7 m), situés à une distance < à 100 m du lac, sont utilisés pour prélever (1) de l’eau du lac après transit à travers le sol et (2) de l’eau de sub-surface/eau souterraine s’écoulant vers le lac. Des échantillons d’eau du lac et des puits tubés ont été analysés en périodes de mousson et de celles sans mousson 1997 à 2006. Résidu sec, C.E., alcalinité et dureté ont été trouvés marginalement supérieurs dans l’eau des puits tubés. La différence d’hydrochimie de l’eau des puits tubés était surtout due à la variation des régimes d’écoulement pendant les périodes de mousson et de celles sans mousson. Les résultats indiquent clairement que l’eau du lac en tant que telle n’est pas potable car elle contient des teneurs inacceptables de matière organique en termes de COD (~44 mg/L), de coliformes (~15.6 × 104 MPN/100 mL) et d’éléments nutritifs. Des bactéries coliformes et du COD n’ont été détectés dans aucun des échantillons d’eau de puits tubés au fil des années. L’eau du lac traitée par des filtres à sable ne se conformait pas aux normes de l’eau potable. Ces recherches ont conduit à la fermeture de l’installation de traitement et à l’implantation de deux puits tubés en plus des cinq puits existants.

Resumen  En el estado de Uttarakhand, India, existen diferentes esquemas de abastecimiento de agua que explotan agua de arroyos, ríos y lagos. En Nainital, siete pozos (profundidades entre 22.6–36.7 m), ubicados a una distancia de <100 m del lago, se usan para extraer (1) agua del lago luego de su pasaje a través del suelo y (2) agua superficial y subterránea que fluye hacia el lago. En períodos de monzón y de no monzón de 1997 a 2006 se han analizado muestras de agua del lago y de las captaciones. Se halló que el agua de los pozos es ligeramente mayor en términos del total de sólidos disueltos, la conductividad eléctrica, la alcalinidad y la dureza. La diferencia en la hidroquímica del agua de las perforaciones se debe principalmente a la variación de los regímenes de flujo durante los períodos de monzón y de no monzón. Los resultados claramente indican que el agua del lago no es potable por su contenido inaceptable de materia orgánica medida como demanda de carbono orgánico/oxígeno –DCO- (~44 mg/L), coliformes (~15.6 × 104 NMP/100 mL) y nutrientes. En el período, no se han detectado bacterias coliformes ni DCO en las muestras de agua de las captaciones. El agua del lago, tratada con filtros de arena, no conformó los estándares de agua para bebida. Estas investigaciones han demostrado la necesidad de clausurar las instalaciones de tratamiento y la adición de dos captaciones a las cinco ya existentes.

Improved knowledge of processes determining groundwater quality is an important precondition for the solution of various ecological and water management problems. In areas with highly fluctuating groundwater levels, time-limited access, local pollution sources or temporary interactions between surface water and groundwater, a temporary groundwater sampling technique could be of advantage. Furthermore, depth-specific sampling is of high value for investigating groundwater pollution related to seepage or surface water infiltration. A stainless steel core probe has been developed to obtain groundwater samples and to measure the hydraulic head distribution at various defined depths. The sampling technique is applicable only for non-volatile water constituents. An advantage of the core probe is that it can be driven into soil or sediments using ordinary low cost percussion equipment. The probe enables hydraulic head measurements and water sampling over vertical intervals of 0.3 m. Results from field experiments using the stainless steel core probe were in good correspondence with results from groundwater sampling at nearby observation wells. In the upper layer of the aquifer, the intrinsic spatial change in concentrations of sulphate, chloride and other water constituents is a function of distance between observation points and groundwater surface. Results indicate strong effects of a fluctuating groundwater level on groundwater quality at certain depths.  相似文献

Despite being a simple and inexpensive pretreatment technology, the cost-effectiveness of riverbank filtration (RBF) depends on complex hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical variables. One of the most important issues for decision makers regarding RBF is optimal site selection. Therefore, a methodology for multicriteria site evaluation for large-scale RBF schemes is offered. The methodology is primarily designed as a prescreening method, applied over a wide area, but can also serve as a guide for evaluating individual RBF sites. To facilitate further discussion about improvements on the methodology, the reasoning behind each relevant factor and its weight in the evaluation is presented. The methodology is divided into three sequential steps through which a site can be assessed. The first step is to establish the existence of connectivity between the river and aquifer. This is termed the essential criterion, and is a binary determination of site suitability. If the site is determined to be suitable, it is then assessed via a set of quantity criteria, which measure the aquifer capacity and amount of bank filtrate that can be effectively abstracted. Lastly, water quality criteria are assessed by means of surface-water and groundwater quality. The quantity and quality criteria form a result expressed as the site suitability index (SSI), which ranges from 0 to 1, where higher scores represent increased suitability. Finally, the methodology is applied to evaluate existing sites of large-scale RBF application as a demonstration of its applicability. The success of these existing sites is compared to the calculated SSI value and discussed.

A 5-day detailed field investigation at a new RBF test well gallery in Embaba, Cairo, was conducted to evaluate the hydraulic setting and the behavior of iron and manganese. The well gallery consists of six vertical wells placed along a straight line parallel to the Nile riverbank. A low anisotropy factor for the aquifer (kf,h:kf,v) of 1.7 was determined by evaluation of a multi-step pumping test. Travel times between 11 days from the river toward the central wells and 22 days toward the outermost wells were estimated by groundwater flow modeling and particle tracking. The riverbed is rich in fine suspended sediments that have elevated iron and nitrogen concentrations. Depth-dependent water sampling during regular well operation indicates that the thick organic-, Fe- and Mn-rich riverbed is the primary source for ammonium, iron and manganese in the bank filtrate. Iron-rich groundwater flow from the opposite riverbank was identified as a secondary source of iron in the pumped water. The vertical position of the filter screen affects total travel times but would not reduce the portion of Mn-rich bank filtrate. The authors recommend continuous well operation for achieving stable water quality and lowering the risk of well clogging.  相似文献

An ultrafiltration methodology and the results of its application on Elbe river water are presented. Compared with other methods, Ultrafiltration allows fractionation of the molecular-weight fractions of DOC for higher volumes of solution in a shorter time. To characterize the molecular-weight fractions, the sum parameter DOC (β(DOC)) and the absorption coefficient at 254 nm a254 were measured, together with determination of a254/ β(DOC) for further characterization of the DOC fractions and to provide information about changes in parts of the UV-active substances of the total dissolved organic material. In the period May 1992 to November 1994, the DOC molecular-weight composition of 65 samples of Elbe river water were determined. At two sampling locations (Torgau-East and Meissen), the DOC content β(DOC) was approximately 6 mg/L. The high-molecular weight fraction (> 10000 g/mol) gave a mean of 13% of the total DOC content β0(DOC). The measurements showed that the molecular composition of DOC in the Elbe does not greatly differ. There was also no clear seasonal influence on the molecular-weight composition of the DOC content. During the period of investigation, the percentage part of β(DOC) and a254/β(DOC) of the high-molecular weight fraction of the total dissolved organic material increased, while the a254/β(DOC) values of the middle molecular-weight fraction remained fairly constant. The dependence of β(DOC) on discharge of the Elbe river is low. Changes in molecularweight composition of DOC were only observed during the steepest increase in river discharge during a flood event, with another spectrum of substances responsible for the increase in β(DOC) when compared with the β(DOC) for low or middle water level.  相似文献

This paper reports changes in dissolved organic carbon concentration β(DOC) and the relation between UV-active and non-UV-active components determined for Elbe river water and river bank infiltrate in the Torgau river basin between 1992 and 1994. Using an ultrafiltration method, the fractionation of the DOC content was obtained for the fractions > 10 000 g/mol, 1 000…10 000 g/mol, and < 1 000 g/mol. The spectral absorption coefficient at 254 nm a254 of the molecular-weight fractions was also measured. The mean total DOC concentration of Elbe river water decreased from 6.0 mg/L to below 3.9 mg/L along two investigated flowpaths. Two thirds of the decrease occurred within the first few metres of the river bed and one third along the 350 m length of the groundwater flowpaths. The a254 values showed a significant decrease from 14.8 1/m in Elbe river water to 7.8 1/m in the aquifer. Along a flowpath, the proportion of low-molecular weight fraction of DOC increased, the proportion of high-molecular weight fraction decreased, and the proportion of the 1 000…10 000 g/mol molecular-weight fraction remained relatively stable. The Elbe river water contained the main portion of UV-active compounds in the fraction 1 000…10 000 g/mol, and this was also the case for samples of river infiltrate. For the high-molecular weight fraction, mainly non-UV-active compounds were attenuated in the river bed sediment.  相似文献

Improvement in the quality of river water filtered through a 17-m thick sand-gravel unconfined aquifer at a production well surrounded by surface-water bodies, in Haridwar (India), was studied. Distances between surface water sources and the production well are more than 115 m, and the shortest travel times are 77 and 84 days for monsoon and non-monsoon periods, respectively. During the monsoon period, surface water exhibited increased turbidity by 50–100 times, bacterial count of around 10 times and decreased electrical conductivity of around 0.6 times compared to non-monsoon samples. The quality of abstracted bank filtrate, however, was found not to significantly vary. In non-monsoon months, riverbank filtration resulted in a reduction of turbidity and coliforms by 1 and 3 logs, respectively. For monsoonal months, this increased to more than 2 and 4 logs in turbidity and coliforms reduction, respectively. UV absorbance was also found to be reduced to about 1 log during monsoon season. Results from column studies confirmed that a retention time of around 5 days is adequate to achieve more than 99.9% removal of coliforms.  相似文献
