BOREAS Kellogg, T. B., Duplessy, J. C. & Shackleton, N. J. 1978 03 01: Planktonic foraminiferal and oxygen isotopic stratigraphy and paleoclimatology of Norwegian Sea deep-sea cores. Boreas. Vol. 7, pp. 61–73. Oslo. ISSN 0300–9483.
Three Norwegian Sea deep-sea cores, which penetrate to sediments at least 200,000 years old, were analyzed for oxygen isotope content, total calcium carbonate, and planktonic foraminifera. The oxygen isotopic stratigraphy was used to refine the time control for paleoclimatic and paleo-oceanographic events previously described for the region. Two pulses of relatively warm subpolar water entered the region between 124,000 B.P. and 115,000 B.P. (the last interglacial), and since about 13,000 B.P. The remaining portion of the last 150,000 years was characterized by extensive ice cover. The magnitude of the change in isotopic composition between peak glacial and peak interglacial conditions is larger than can be explained by the changing isotopic content of the oceans alone suggesting that large temperature and salinity effects are recorded in isotope curves from Norwegian Sea isotope curves. The magnitude of the isotopic change from substage 5e to 5d (greater than 1%) is attributed to a combination of changing oceanic isotopic composition combined with a large temperature effect due to a sudden sea-surface temperature decrease of about 6oC. The persistence of heavy isotope values throughout substages 5d through 5a may be related to the sea-ice cover which prevented dilution of the isotopically heavy waters by isotopically light run-off. Sedimentation rates calculated for each of the isotope stages show large changes from one stage to another with some tendency for odd numbered stages to have higher rates.

Hummocky cross-stratification is a sedimentary structure which is widely interpreted as the sedimentary record of an oscillatory current generated by energetic storm waves remobilizing surface sediment on the continental shelf. Sedimentary structures named hummocky cross-stratification-like structures, similar to true hummocky cross-stratification, have been observed in the Turonian–Senonian Basque Flysch Basin (south-west France). The bathymetry (1000 to 1500 m) suggests that the observed sedimentary structures do not result from a hydrodynamic process similar to those acting on a continental shelf. The morphology of these three-dimensional structures shares similarities with the morphology of hummocky cross-stratification despite a smaller size. The lateral extent of these structures ranges from a few decimetres to many decimetres; they consist of convex-up domes (hummock) and concave-up swales with a non-erosive base. Four types of hummocky cross-stratification-like geometries are described; they occur in association with structures such as climbing current ripple lamination and synsedimentary deformations. In the Basque Flysch, hummocky cross-stratification-like structures are only found in the Tc interval of the Bouma sequence. Hummocky cross-stratification-like structures are sporadic in the stratigraphic series and observed only in few turbidite beds or bed packages. This observation suggests that hummocky cross-stratification-like structures are linked genetically to the turbidity current but form under a very restricted range of parameters. These structures sometimes show an up-current (upslope) migration trend (antidunes). In the described examples, they could result from standing waves forming at the upper flow interface because of Kelvin–Helmholtz instability.

Foraminiferal assemblages were studied in northern Barents Sea core ASV 880 along with oxygen and carbon isotope measurements in planktonic (N. pachyderma sin.) and benthic (E clavatum) species. AMS C‐14 measurements performed on molluscs Yoldiella spp. show that this core provides a detailed and undisturbed record of Holocene climatic changes over the last 10000 calendar years. Surface and deep waters were very cold (<0°C) at the beginning of the Holocene. C. reniforme dominated the highly diverse benthic foraminiferal assemblage. From 10 to 7.8 cal. ka BP, a warming trend culminated in a temperature optimum, which developed between 7.8 and 6.8 cal. ka BP. During this optimum, the input of Atlantic water to the Barents Sea reached its maximum. The Atlantic water mass invaded the whole Franz Victoria Trough and was present from subsurface to the bottom. No bottom water, which would form through rejection of brine during winter, was present at the core depth (388 m). The water stratification was therefore greatly reduced as compared to the present. An increase in percentage of I. helenae/norcrossi points to long seasonal ice‐free conditions. The temperature optimum ended rather abruptly, with the return of cold polar waters into the trough within a few centuries. This was accompanied by a dramatic reduction of the abundance of C. reniforme. During the upper Holocene, the more opportunistic species E. clavatum became progressively dominant and the water column was more stratified. Deep water in Franz Victoria Trough contained a significant amount of cold Barents Sea bottom water as it does today, while subsurface water warmed progressively until about 3.7 cal. ka BP and reached temperatures similar to those of today. These long‐term climatic changes were cut by several cold events of short duration, in particular one in the middle of the temperature optimum and another, which coincides most probably with the 8.2 ka BP cold event. Both long‐ and short‐term climatic changes in the Barents Sea are associated with changes in the flow of Atlantic waters and the oceanic conveyor belt.

The development and termination of the Eemian interglacial is important because it may serve as a model showing how the present warm period might end in the event of no anthropogenic impact. The most important methods for studying the Eemian are outlined and critically evaluated. In spite of interpretation and dating problems, the various proxy data seem consistent enough to allow the conclusion that some 120,000 years ago the warm Eemian climate deteriorated rapidly and drastically. The forest vegetation in West Europe was replaced by a tundra type vegetation, and within 5000 or 10,OOO years the volume of continental ice grew to at least double the present volume, corresponding to a sea level 65 m, perhaps 90 m, below that of today. There is considerable disagreement between sea level estimates deduced from geological evidence and from benthic foraminifera oxygen isotope records.

During the summer 1987 expedition of the polar research vessel'Polarstern'in the Eurasian Basin of the Arctic Ocean, sea ice at about 84-86°N and 20-30°E was found to have high concentrations of particulate material. The particle-laden ice occurred in patches which often darkened more than half the ice surface at our northernmost positions. Much of this ice appeared to be within the Siberian Branch of the Transpolar Drift stream, which transports deformed, multi-year ice from the Siberian shelves westward across the Eurasian Basin. Lithogenic sediment, which is the major component of the particulate material, may have been incorporated during ice formation on the shallow Siberian seas. Diatoms collected from the particle-rich ice surfaces support this conclusion, as assemblages were dominated by a marine benthic species similar to that reported from sea ice off the coast of northeast Siberia. Based on drift trajectories of buoys deployed on the ice it appears that much of the particle-laden ice exited the Arctic Ocean through the Fram Strait and joined the East Greenland Current.
Very different sea ice characteristics were found east of the Yermak Plateau and north of Svalbard and Frans Josef Land up to about 83-84°N. Here sea ice was thinner, less deformed, with lower amounts of lithogenic sediment and diatoms. The diatom assemblage was dominated by planktonic freshwater species. Trajectories of buoys deployed on sea ice in this region indicated a tendency for southward transport to the Yermak Plateau or into the Barents Sea.
