The key aspect in planning and management of water resources is to analyze the runoff potential and erosion status of the river basin. For the detailed investigation of hydrological response, freely available Cartosat-1 (IRS-P5) data was used for the preparation of digital elevation model (DEM). The runoff potential and type of erosive process of 22 river basins originating in the global biodiversity hotspot of Western Ghats, was inferred through hypsometric analysis. Several parameters like Hypsometric integral (HI), maximum concavity (Eh), coordinates of slope inflection point (I) given by a* and h* and normalized height of hypsometric curve (h) were extracted from the hypsometric curves and used for understanding the hydrological responses. From the hypsometric curves, the landform evolution processes were inferred. Contribution of diffusive and fluvial processes in slope degradation of the river basins was understood. Basins with lesser area (<100 km2) were found to have a positive correlation between hypsometric integral and basin area, whereas for large basins no such correlation exists. Based on the study, river basins can be prioritized for the appropriate conservation measures.  相似文献

Chemical analysis of nine Deccan flow basalts at Anjar, Kutch, western India, indicates that all, except the uppermost flow F-9, are alkaline. In their major and trace element composition, the alkali basalts resemble Ocean island basalts (OIB). Similarities of many diagnostic trace element ratios (e.g. Sm/Nd, Ba/Nb,Y/Nb and Zr/Nb) are similar to those found in the Réunion Island basalts. The uppermost basalt is tholeiitic and chemically resembles the least contaminated Deccan basalt (Ambenali type). The Anjar basalts have iridium concentration ranging between 2 and 178 pg/g. Some of these values are higher by about an order of magnitude compared to the Ir concentration in other basalts of the Deccan. A synthesis of chemical, palaeomagnetic and geochronologic data enables us to construct a chemical and magnetic stratigraphy for these flows. The three flows below the iridium enriched intertrappean bed (IT III) show normal magnetic polarity whereas all except one of the upper basalts show reversed magnetic polarity. The sequence seems to have started in polarity zones 31N and probably continued up to 28R or 27R. The results presented here support the view that Deccan volcanism in Kutch occurred on a time span of a few million years.  相似文献

Monthly mesoscale eddy kinetic energy (EKE) per unit mass has been computed for four years, 1993-1996, from TOPEX altimeter data in the Indian Ocean. It ranges from 50 cm2/s2 to 2,700 cm2/s2 (about 4,000 cm2/s2 near the Somali region in a few months). In the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, regions of high energies associated with various current systems under the influence of monsoonal winds have been delineated. Monthly variation of EKE near the Somali region has been studied. In this region the maximum EKE per unit mass has been observed during August every year, with variations in magnitude from year to year. The mesoscale eddy kinetic energy computed from TOPEX altimeter-derived SSH during 1993-1996 is highest near the Somali region during the SW monsoon, due to formation of mesoscale eddies and also because of upwelling. In the Bay of Bengal, high eddy kinetic energy is seen toward the western side during nonmonsoonal months due to the western boundary current. In the South Indian Ocean, it is high at a few places in some of the months. A large part of the Indian Ocean exhibits low eddy kinetic energy (less than 300 cm2/s2) year-round.  相似文献

The glaucony series (of which glauconitic mica is the K-rich end member) is one of the few widely occurring minerals in the sedimentary record. So their isotopic ages determined mainly by the K–Ar method represent a major database for the geologic time scale. Many K–Ar ages were, however, found to be too young and often also discordant with available corresponding Rb–Sr ages. This discrepancy may reflect the disparate responses of the chemically contrasting daughter elements, Ar and Sr to postdepositional processes, and renders either age equivocal. A potentially promising approach to evaluate the intrinsic potential of glauconies and other K-rich minerals for direct and reliable dating of sediments is the conjunctive use of the chemically very similar K–Ca and Rb–Sr systems. The relationship between K–Ca and Rb–Sr ages may show a coherence or regularity indicative of a geologically meaningful age like in the case of the well known chemically identical dual U–Pb decay systems. As a crucial first step, this report presents the first successful precise K–Ca dating in conjunction with Rb–Sr dating of an Ordovician glauconite using the same sample aliquot, chemical procedure and mass spectrometer.  相似文献

Stromatolites associated with cherty dolomites of the Vanivilaspura Formation of the Archaean Dharwar Supergroup show a morphology indicative of the deposition of the latter in a intertidal to subtidal environment. The cherts are moderately high in their Al/Al + Fe ratios but depleted in Fe2C3 and also most trace elements. Unlike most other Archaean cherts, the Vanivilaspur cherts exhibit significant negative Ce anomaly, which is interpreted to have resulted from contemporary manganese deposition. The Rb/Sr ratios in the cherts show a sufficient spread to define a linear correlation line in the Rb-Sr evolution diagram corresponding to an age of 2512 ± 159 Ma and initial Sr ratio of 0.7128 ± 0.0012 (2σ). While this age is strikingly close to that of regional metamorphism in the Dharwar craton, the initial ratio is distinctly higher than that of the associated volcanics. Acid leaching experiments on the cherts suggest that they may have been isotopically equilibrated on a mm to cm scale about 500 Ma later than the time of regional metamorphism.  相似文献

The Peninsular Gneiss around Gorur in the Dharwar craton, reported to be one of the oldest gneisses, shows nealy E-W striking gneissosity parallel to the axial planes of a set of isoclinal folds (DhF1). These have been over printed by near-coaxial open folding (DhF12) and non-coaxial upright folding on almost N-S trend (DhF2). This structural sequence is remarkably similar to that in the Holenarasipur schist belt bordering the gneisses as well as in the surpracrustal enclaves within the gneisses, suggesting that the Peninsular Gneiss has evolved by migmatization synkinematically with DhF1 deformation. The Gorur gneisses are high silica, low alumina trondhjemites enriched in REE (up to 100 times chondrite), with less fractionated REE patterns (CeN/YbN < 7) and consistently negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.5 to 0.7). A whole rock Rb-Sr isochron of eight trondhjemitic gneisses sampled from two adjacent quarries yields an age of 3204 ± 30 Ma with Sr i of 0.7011 ± 6 (2σ). These are marginally different from the results of Beckinsale and coworkers (3315 ± 54 Ma, Sr i = 0.7006 ± 3) based on a much wider sampling. Our results indicate that the precursors of Gorur gneisses had a short crustal residence history of less than a 100 Ma.  相似文献

On the basis of field relations, petrography and chemistry, three types of granitoids are recognized at Malanjkhand in and around the copper deposit over an area of about 200 km2. These are (i) a fine grained ‘leucogranite’ of restricted occurrence in the surrounding area (Gr-I); (ii) coarse-grained, grey in most parts, gneissose granitoid of regional extension (Gr-II); and (iii) the pink-feldspar bearing massive type hosting the mineralization with occasional representatives in the surrounding country (Gr-III). Gr-I comes out as a distinct entity on the basis of cross-cutting relation and mineralogical and chemical composition, the Rb-Sr whole rock isochron also giving a younger age than the other two groups irrespective of the regression model used. Gr-II comes out as the oldest unit but its age relationship with Gr-III cannot be established unequivocally. An uncorrelated error regression model establishes the age relationship as Gr-I<Gr-III<Gr-II, whereas a two-error regression model establishes temporal closeness between Gr-II and III. The term ‘granitoids’ is being used broadly to include rocks ranging in composition from alkali-granite to tonalite.  相似文献

Palaeomagnetic, geochemical and geochronological studies have been conducted on a set of dolerite dykes intruding the Peninsular gneisses near Huliyurdurga town, Karnataka, as a reconnaissance survey indicated a Cretaceous age for them. The dykes are mainly tholeiitic in composition with their 87Sr/86Sr ratios tightly clustered around 0·7045. Their palaeomagnetic data (D m =329°,I m =−55°) and the corresponding palaeopole coordinates (λ p = 34°S,L p =108°E) are strikingly close to those of the Deccan Traps to the north. Whole rock K-Ar ages of these dykes ranging between 69 and 84 Ma are also similar to the range of K-Ar ages of the Deccan basalts. The chemical, palaeomagnetic and temporal coherence between the dykes and the Deccan basalts indicate that they may indeed be tectonically related events.  相似文献

For studies of mass-dependent fractionation of calcium isotopes in natural materials, the 48Ca/42Ca ratio is a superior choice to the conventionally measured 44Ca/40Ca ratio for two important reasons. These are (1) mass-dependent fractionation can be determined free from the effects of inherited or ingrown radiogenic 40Ca and (2) this ratio increases the spread of measured isotopic masses by 50%, resulting in statistically better resolution of fractionation, assuming similar precision. A third, though strictly technical, advantage is the inherent ability of a mass spectrometer to measure ratios close to unity (48Ca/42Ca) more precisely than very small or large ratios (44Ca/40Ca). However, because of the very low natural abundance of both 48Ca and 42Ca, their ratio has been very difficult to measure, the only attempt so far being on a high mass resolution MC-ICP-MS with a precision of 0.33%. We report here determination of the 48Ca/42Ca ratio by the more commonly available and user-friendly multi-collector TIMS using a 43Ca-46Ca double-spike, with a significantly better precision of 0.18% (2s). The 48Ca/40Ca or 44Ca/40Ca ratio can also be measured in the same mass spectrometer run to provide complementary information on any radiogenic component.  相似文献

Physical oceanography measurements reveal a strong salinity (0.18 psu km−1) and temperature (0.07 °C km−1) front off the east coast of India in December 1997. T–S diagrams suggest lateral mixing between the fresh water at the coast and the ambient warmer, saltier water. This front seems to be the result of southward advection of fresh and cool water, formed in the northern Bay of Bengal during the monsoon, by the East Indian Coastal Current, as suggested by the large-scale salinity structure in the SODA re-analysis and the anti-cyclonic gyre in the northwestern Bay of Bengal during winter. The data further reveals an offshore front in January, which appears to be the result of a meso-scale re-circulation around an eddy, bringing cold and freshwater from the northern Bay of Bengal further away from the shore. Our cruise data hence illustrates that very strong salinity fronts can appear in the Bay of Bengal after the monsoon, as a result of intense coastal circulation and stirring by eddies.
