The convergent margin of western Mexico is uniquely characterizedby a volcanic front of lamprophyric and related lavas located{small tilde}70 km closer to the Middle America trench thanthe main axis of andesitic volcanism. This front, defined bysmall volcanic centers ranging in age from {small tilde}1 kato 3 Ma, contains several lava types: minette, absarokite, leucitite,spessartite, and kersantite, all without feldspar phenocrysts.Many of the lavas contain hydrous phenocrysts; they are enrichedin potassium and other incompatible elements, and they are moreoxidized relative to the andesitic suite of the main axis. Intimatelyassociated are flows of basaltic andesite of comparable volume.They range in composition from 53 to 58 wt.%SiO2, have 5–9wt.%MgO and contain phenocrysts of olivine, sparse augite, andvarying amounts of plagioclase. Their alkali contents are typicalof calc-alkaline varieties, with average Na2O and K2O concentrationsof 4?2 and 1?1 wt.% respectively. The basaltic andesites oftencontain olivine of unusually high forsterite content, reflectingcrystallization under oxidizing conditions, and they have oxygenfugacities up to 3?3 log units above the Ni-NiO buffer. Manifestationsof high water contents are (1) the ubiquitous occurrence ofgroundmass olivine rather than orthopyroxene, and (2) the suppressionof plagioclase as an early crystallizing phase. Both featuresreflect the role of water in reducing the activity of silicain the melt. The progressive influence of water during crystallizationis also seen in the continuum between the two intermediate lavatypes, basaltic andesite and kersantite, as plagioclase is suppressedand hornblende is stabilized in the phenocryst assemblage. Thus,despite the absence of hydrous minerals in the basaltic andesites,their phenocryst assemblages reveal the influence of substantialamounts of water, and thereby show a genetic link to the variouslamprophyric lavas.  相似文献

Chlorite in the Atlantic sediments is predominantly derived from the Atlas Mountains, kaolinite originates in the southern Sahara and Sahel zone. These minerals may be used to reconstruct the tracks of two superimposed wind systems (Trade Winds and Harmattan Wind). A modified method for determining relative abundances of chlorite and kaolinite is presented.  相似文献

In the Orlica‐?nie?nik complex at the NE margin of the Bohemian Massif, high‐pressure granulites occur as isolated lenses within partially migmatized orthogneisses. Sm–Nd (different grain‐size fractions of garnet, clinopyroxene and/or whole rock) and U–Pb [isotope dilution‐thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID‐TIMS) single grain and sensitive high‐resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP)] ages for granulites, collected in the surroundings of ?ervený D?l (Czech Republic) and at Stary Giera?tów (Poland), constrain the temporal evolution of these rocks during the Variscan orogeny. Most of the new ages cluster at c. 350–340 Ma and are consistent with results previously reported for similar occurrences throughout the Bohemian Massif. This interval is generally interpreted to constrain the time of high‐pressure metamorphism. A more complex evolution is recorded for a mafic granulite from Stary Giera?tów and concerns the unknown duration of metamorphism (single, short‐lived metamorphic cycle or different episodes that are significantly separated in time?). The central grain parts of zircon from this sample yielded a large spread in apparent 206Pb/238U SHRIMP ages (c. 462–322 Ma) with a distinct cluster at c. 365 Ma. This spread is interpreted to be indicative for variable Pb‐loss that affected magmatic protolith zircon during high‐grade metamorphism. The initiating mechanism and the time of Pb‐loss has yet to be resolved. A connection to high‐pressure metamorphism at c. 350–340 Ma is a reasonable explanation, but this relationship is far from straightforward. An alternative interpretation suggests that resetting is related to a high‐temperature event (not necessarily in the granulite facies and/or at high pressures) around 370–360 Ma, that has previously gone unnoticed. This study indicates that caution is warranted in interpreting U–Pb zircon data of HT rocks, because isotopic rejuvenation may lead to erroneous conclusions.  相似文献

On Tawharanui Peninsula mudslides occur in soils developed on Waitemata Group flysch similar to that underlying much of the Auckland metropolitan area. Mudslides are shallow soil failures with a bowlshaped source area, an elongated track, and an accumulation zone. Movement may continue for decades to centuries. Modelling suggests that failure of saturated soils occurs along a basal surface defined by the regolith / bedrock contact; rates of movement and time of initiation have not been established. Reactivation or increased mobility of mudslides due to climatic change represents an increased hazard for infrastructure in Auckland City.  相似文献

Abstract— To test different hypotheses of moldavite formation, a major and trace-element study of 25 moldavite tektites and Sm-Nd isotope measurement of three moldavite tektites was completed. The samples were selected from the classical substrewnfields and the newly described locations in Lusatia (Saxony, Germany). Samples with unusual bulk composition were also included. The results confirm earlier studies that the variation in the chemical composition can be explained by single impact and through incomplete mixing of at least three lithographical components dominated by one of the three minerals or mineral groups: dolomite, clay minerals and quartz. An additional endmember, possibly a rare Earth's mantle component, containing high Co, Cr and Ni concentrations is also needed to explain the observed variations in compatible elements of some tektites. Volatile element abundances are low but not necessarily the result of selective volatilization.  相似文献

地中海位于非洲季风气候和欧洲温带气候的交界处,同时接受周边地区岩石性质和风化状况差异极大的碎屑物质,所以是研究地球表层水文循环的理想区域。前人的认识集中于撒哈拉风尘和尼罗河输入,往往忽视了其他的陆源碎屑沉积,尤其对不同水文气候条件下的潜在变化缺乏考虑。针对形成于全新世非洲湿润期的腐泥层S1页岩沉积,并结合采自岩心顶部的晚全新世/现代沉积物,文章从18个站位选取了30个样品开展碎屑组分的地球化学分析,通过在具有不同干湿环境背景的时间片段上开展盆地尺度的对比(约9.5~8.9 ka vs. 约1.7~0 ka),探讨全新世东地中海的陆源碎屑输入模式。Ti/Al、Zr/Al、Ca/Al、Y/Al都清晰显示了经向和纬向上的梯度变化,可用作撒哈拉风尘的可靠指标;这些碎屑元素之间的差异反映了北非风尘来源和传送路径的变化。这些风尘指标在南-北向上的一致变化指示了副热带高压与西风带的交互界限为36°N,该界限在全新世应稳定存在。与风尘相反,河流输入的指标值在早全新世时显著高于现代,并呈现不同的地理分布。K/Al具有西高东低、北高南低的分布特征,指示了地中海北部沿岸地区的河流输入。根据与Ti/Al、K/Al的差异,利用(Cr+Ni)/Al可较好地识别被增强的季风降雨所激活的北非古河流沉积。河流输入在早全新世时显著上升,但不同河流系统的影响范围差异很大,受制于源区水文气候、表层洋流搬运等因素。  相似文献
