Diatoms, organic matter and magnetic susceptibility in a 10-m-long sediment sequence from coastal Lake Lilaste, Latvia, were analysed to evaluate Holocene environmental changes related to past sea-water intrusions. Lake Lilaste is located ~1 km from the present sea coast in an area with a low uplift rate and a threshold altitude of 0.5 m a.s.l. It was thus considered to be an appropriate site to study the influence of past sea level fluctuations on the lake and its sediments. Variations in diatom community composition, along with sediment lithostratigraphy, show that a shallow, nutrient-rich freshwater lake existed there during the early Holocene. The first brackish-water diatoms appeared concurrent with a sea level rise ca. 8700 ± 50 cal a BP, but long-term, intermittent inputs of brackish water were observed between 6700 ± 40 and 4200 ± 80 cal a BP. During those time spans, diatoms indicate increased nutrient concentrations and high conductivity, a consequence of occasional mixing of brackish and freshwater that promoted biological productivity. Lilaste was isolated from the sea at 4200 ± 80 cal a BP, after which a stable freshwater environment, dominated by planktonic diatoms such as Aulacoseira ambigua, A. granulata, A. islandica and A. subarctica, was established. At 400 ± 50 cal a BP, planktonic diatoms were gradually replaced by Fragilaria spp., indicating the beginning of anthropogenic impact. The reconstructed relative water-level curve from the lake coincides with the eustatic sea level curve from 6800 ± 40 cal a BP onwards. There was a distinct increase in abundance of brackish-water diatoms when the sea level reached the threshold of Lilaste, which at that time was probably about 3 m lower than the present sea level. According to radiocarbon-dated shifts in the diatom community composition, the Litorina Sea transgression was a long-lasting event (ca. 2200 years) in the southern part of the Gulf of Riga, where the land uplift rate was near zero. It culminated more than 1000 years later than at other sites with higher uplift, in the northern part of the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

This paper investigates a detailed well‐dated Lateglacial floristic colonisation in the eastern Baltic area, ca. 14 000–9000 cal. a BP, using palynological, macrofossil, loss‐on‐ignition, and 14C data. During 14 000–13 400 cal. a BP, primarily treeless pioneer tundra vegetation existed. Tree birch (Betula sect. Albae) macro‐remains and a high tree pollen accumulation rate indicate the presence of forest‐tundra with birch and possibly pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees during 13 400–12 850 cal. a BP. Palaeobotanical data indicate that the colonisation and development of forested areas were very rapid, arising within a period of less than 50 years. Thus far, there are no indications of conifer macrofossils in Estonia to support the presence of coniferous forests in the Lateglacial period. Signs of Greenland Interstadial 1b cooling during 13 100 cal. a BP are distinguishable. Biostratigraphic evidence indicates that the vegetation was again mostly treeless tundra during the final colder episode of the Lateglacial period associated with Greenland Stadial 1, approximately 12 850–11 650 cal. a BP. Carbon flows in five south-eastern Baltic coastal ecosystems (Puck Bay, Curonian Lagoon, Lithuanian coast, Gulf of Riga coast and Pärnu Bay) were compared on the basis of ECOPATH models using 12 common functional groups. The studied systems ranged from the hypertrophic Curonian Lagoon to the mesotrophic Gulf of Riga coast. Interestingly, we found that macrophytes were not consumed by grazers, but rather channelled into the detritus food chain. In all ecosystems fisheries had far reaching impacts on their target species and on the food-web in general. In particular, benthic food-webs were partly affected by indirect fisheries effects. For example, fisheries tend to change the biomass of piscivorous fish, causing a cascading effect on benthivorous fish and macrozoobenthos. These cascades are ecosystem specific and need to be considered when using benthic invertebrates as productivity and eutrophication indicators. Odum’s maturity attributes allowed a ranking of costal ecosystems according to their maturity. Namely, the community development decreased in the following order: Pärnu Bay > Gulf of Riga coast > Lithuanian coast > Puck Bay > Curonian Lagoon.  相似文献

A GIS-based palaeogeographic reconstruction of the development of the Baltic Ice Lake (BIL) in the eastern Baltic during the deglaciation of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet is presented. A Late Glacial shoreline database containing more than 1000 sites from Finland, NW Russia, Estonia, Latvia and modern digital terrain models were used for palaeoreconstructions. The BIL occupied five different levels, represented by 492 shoreline features. The study shows that at about 13.3 cal. ka BP the BIL extended to the ice-free areas of Latvia, Estonia and NW Russia, represented by the highest shoreline in this region. Reconstructions demonstrate that BIL initially had the same water level as the Glacial Lakes Peipsi and Võrtsjärv, because these water bodies were connected via strait systems in central Estonia. These strait systems were closed at about 12.8–11.7 cal. ka BP prior to the final drainage of the BIL due to isostatic uplift. Glacial Lake Võrtsjärv was isolated from the BIL at about 12.4–12.0 cal. ka BP. Exact timing of Glacial Lake Peipsi isolation is not clear, but according to the altitude of the threshold in northeast Estonia and shore displacement data it was completed at about 12.4–11.7 cal. ka BP.  相似文献

Based on extensive data from a long-term investigation, a new genetic classification of lake basins is proposed for Estonia. Eight lake groups are distinguished, tectonic-denudation, glacial, chemical, fluvial, coastal (neotectonic), telmatogenic, cosmogenic and artificial, containing 13 subgroups and 19 basin types. Also proposed is a new lithological classification of Estonia's organic and calcareous lake sediments, based on analyses of more than 2000 sediment samples from 90 contemporary and 50 late-glacial (extinct) lakes. Of the ca. 1150 Estonian lake basins that formed on mineral substrate, the two largest basins are of preglacial, tectonic-denudation origin, later modified by glaciers. Eight hundred lakes are of glacial origin, and 300 of other origins in the Holocene. In addition, ca 20 000 bog pools formed on peat in the Holocene. Only minerogenous sedimentation occurred in the lakes in the late-glacial period. After that, organic (gyttjas) and/or calcareous sediments have formed. Azonal factors have been largely responsible for the wide variation in Estonia's lacustrine deposits.This article belongs to a series of papers to be published by this journal that was presented in the paleolimnology sessions organized by R. Abstract— A sequence of peat enriched with impact ejecta (allochthonous minerals and iridium) from Piila bog, 6 km away from the Kaali impact crater (island of Saaremaa, Estonia), was examined using pollen, radiocarbon, loss‐on‐ignition, and x‐ray diffraction analyses to date and assess the environmental effect of the impact. The vegetation in the surroundings of the Piila bog before the Kaali impact was a fen surrounded by forest in natural conditions. Significant changes occur in pollen accumulation and composition of pollen in the depth interval 170–178 cm, which contains above background values of iridium (up to 0.53 ppb). Two samples from the basal silt layer inside the main crater at Kaali contain 0.8 ppb of iridium, showing that iridium was present in the impact ejecta. The impact explosion swept the surroundings clean of forest shown by the threefold decrease in the total pollen influx (especially tree pollen influx), increase in influx and diversity of herb taxa, and the relative dominance of pine. Increased input of mineral matter measured by loss‐on‐ignition and the composition mineral matter (increased input of allochthonous minerals) together with an extensive layer of charcoal and wood stumps in Piila bog at the same depth interval points to an ecological catastrophe, with local impact‐induced wildfires reaching at least 6 km northwest of the epicenter. The disappearance of cereals in the pollen record suggests that farming, cultivation and possibly human habitation in the region ceased for a period of ~100 years. The meteorite explosion at Kaali ranged between the effects of Hiroshima and Tunguska. The age of the Kaali impact event is placed between 800–100 B.C. based on radiocarbon dating of the peat enriched with impact ejecta in the Piila bog.  相似文献

Performance of moving bed biofilm reactor system for a real hospital wastewater (HW) was experimented, modelled, and optimized using response surface methodology. Prior to conducting laboratory tests, design of the experiments was evaluated to minimize any prediction error. Statistical analyses demonstrated the models’ validity and adequacy for anticipation of the removal of BOD and COD by the process. The models predictions (with desirability of 0.98) were found to be in very good agreement with confirmative experiments results. The results indicated that under convenient operating conditions of the studied variables (packing rate 70%, HRT 24 h, and MLSS 3000 mg/L), the removal efficiencies for BOD and COD were 97.8 and 95.6%, respectively. Moreover, kinetics of the biological process showed that removal of organic matters for the tested wastewater adheres to modified Stover–Kincannon model with a correlation coefficient of 0.998. Ratio of BOD to COD of 0.6 (optimal range for biological treatment normally is >0.5) suggests acceptable efficiency of the reactor for decomposing organic load. A high overall efficiency of the process and fulfilling the related standards make this system an appropriate option for treating HDW.  相似文献

In this work, we investigate macroscopic characteristics, magnetic susceptibility, mineralogy, and mineral composition of Al Haggounia 001. The samples were collected during eight field missions in the period between 2015 and 2019. In the strewn field of about 65 km in length, the specimens are found either on the surface or shallowly buried in loose sediments, which rules out the previous suggestions that this meteorite is a fossil meteorite. Macroscopically, the samples exhibit three major lithologies with various colors, porosities, and distributions of oxidized veins. The data obtained using transmitted and reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron microprobe analysis confirm the macroscopic observations and show a heterogenous distribution of silicates and metal sulfides. Al Haggounia 001 is composed of enstatite, plagioclase, kamacite, taenite, schreibersite, daubreelite, troilite, graphite, sinoite, and silica polymorphs. We identified a new type of chondrules that are flattened and composed of rods of albite and enstatite, as well as elongated nodules of metal and sulfides, in addition to compression fractures in the form of subparallel veinlets. These features presumably reflect the deformation caused by shock. The magnetic susceptibility of Al Haggounia 001 (4.39 ± 0.20) is much lower than that of usual EH (5.48 ± 0.16) and EL (5.46 ± 0.04) chondrites but is in the range of E finds (5.05 ± 0.43). The thermomagnetic and hysteresis measurements are controlled by type, size, distribution of metal-sulfide nodules, arrangement of oxyhydroxide veins, and weathering. Al Haggounia 001 is an anomalous meteorite with a polymict nature. It records multiple events revealing its unique origin which expends the groups of enstatite chondrites and provides insights into the complex formation and evolution history of their parent body.  相似文献

经仔细研究了1999~2002年间全球48次Ms≥7.0以上、中国大陆12次Ms≥6.0以上地震前山西地区5口地下水位观测井强震前的前驱波事件,给出了井水位前驱波的识别方法.从理论与实验结果分析了前驱波与震源成核过程之间的关系;根据井一含水层系统的特征参数给出了不同类型观测井对前驱波响应能力的大小;根据记录地震前驱波信息所需要的条件,初步探讨了大震前驱波远程传播的机制.  相似文献

We have conducted a case study to investigate the performance of support vector machine, multivariate adaptive regression splines, and random forest time series methods in snowfall modeling. These models were applied to a data set of monthly snowfall collected during six cold months at Hamadan Airport sample station located in the Zagros Mountain Range in Iran. We considered monthly data of snowfall from 1981 to 2008 during the period from October/November to April/May as the training set and the data from 2009 to 2015 as the testing set. The root mean square errors (RMSE), mean absolute errors (MAE), determination coefficient (R 2), coefficient of efficiency (E%), and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) statistics were used as evaluation criteria. Our results indicated that the random forest time series model outperformed the support vector machine and multivariate adaptive regression splines models in predicting monthly snowfall in terms of several criteria. The RMSE, MAE, R 2, E, and ICC for the testing set were 7.84, 5.52, 0.92, 0.89, and 0.93, respectively. The overall results indicated that the random forest time series model could be successfully used to estimate monthly snowfall values. Moreover, the support vector machine model showed substantial performance as well, suggesting it may also be applied to forecast snowfall in this area.  相似文献
