Measurements of transpiration from individual trees of Eucalyptus from plantations at four different sites in Karnataka, Southern India, are presented. These show large (as much as tenfold) differences in the transpiration between premonsoon and postmonsoon periods, a reflection of the effects of soil-moisture stress in the premonsoon periods. For trees with diameters at breast height (DBH) less than 10 cm the transpiration rate of individual trees is proportional to the square of the DBH. For trees which are not experiencing soil-water stress the daily transpiration rate of individual trees, q, is well represented by the relation: q = (6.6 ± 0.3)g (m3 day−1 where g (m2) is the tree basal area. On a unit ground area basis the transpiration rate, expressed as a depth per day is given by the relation: Et = (0.66 ± 0.03)G (mm day−1 where g(m2ha−1) is the total basal area per hectare. For all the sites studied, although there is evidence for the ‘mining’ of soil water as roots penetrate deeper depths in the soil each year, there is no evidence for direct abstraction from the water table.  相似文献

Biochar has been considered a safe soil additive to enhance soil fertility and agronomic traits of different crops. This study was conducted to explore the impacts of sugarcane waste straw biochar on soil characteristics and some agronomic traits of okra. The experiment was carried out with four treatments, i.e., control, sugarcane waste straw biochar (10 ton ha?1), farmyard manure (FYM, 10 ton ha?1), and chemical fertilizers (NPK; 120:100:80 kg ha?1) having three replications of each treatment. Soil samples were tested for texture, bulk density, particle density, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic matter content, nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), and extractable-P. The sugarcane waste straw biochar was characterized for plant major nutrient elements. The impact of various treatments was observed on soils and agronomic traits of okra like plant height, fruit size, fruit length, and yield of okra. Results revealed that sugarcane waste straw biochar expressed higher EC value and noticeable amounts of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sulfur (S), and magnesium (Mg). The sugarcane waste straw biochar, in comparison with FYM and NPK, significantly improved the NO3-N, extractable-P, OM and EC of the calcareous soil, and reduced the soil bulk density. Furthermore, plant growth and yield parameters were significantly improved under biochar application over the control, FYM and NPK. Overall, sugarcane waste straw biochar proved to be a good alternative to conventional organic and inorganic fertilizers under calcareous soil conditions.  相似文献

This paper introduces the process of development and practical use implementation of an advanced river management system for supporting integrated water resources management practices in Asian river basins under the framework of GEOSS Asia water cycle initiative (AWCI). The system is based on integration of data from earth observation satellites and in-situ networks with other types of data, including numerical weather prediction model outputs, climate model outputs, geographical information, and socio-economic data. The system builds on the water and energy budget distributed hydrological model (WEB-DHM) that was adapted for specific conditions of studied basins, in particular snow and glacier phenomena and equipped with other functions such as dam operation optimization scheme and a set of tools for climate change impact assessment to be able to generate relevant information for policy and decision makers. In situ data were archived for 18 selected basins at the data integration and analysis system of Japan (DIAS) and demonstration projects were carried out showing potential of the new system. It included climate change impact assessment on hydrological regimes, which is presently a critical step for sound management decisions. Results of such three case studies in Pakistan, Philippines, and Vietnam are provided here.  相似文献

This article attempts to analyse the schema, design and characteristics of the mythical geography of the Hindus. Hindu cosmological speculations have attained their pinnacle in the Purādnas, which dwell on, among other things, the universe in space and time. Purādnic writers created through the symbol of myth a matchless system of continents and oceans, mountains and rivers, lakes and forests. Instead of identifying the fictive continents and oceans with the real world referents, the paper analyses the mythical geography of the Purādnas as a schema, in terms of its own characteristics and purpose. The geography of the Purādnas is symbolic rather than representative, it is rule based, rather than imitative. It seeks to give order to the world and far from reflecting reality, endeavours to create its own reality based on archetypal images and cosmic numbers. Hindu myth makers have transformed unknown physical phantasmagoria into a manageable, meaningful and largely symmetric cosmos. The resulting cosmos is an intricate world of human experience, imagination and fantasy put into one. In this paper, we use Visser’s cut and paste approach to construct thin-shell wormholes from charged black string. The dynamics of thin-shell wormholes is analyzed by taking Van der Waals quintessence fluid at the wormhole throat. We investigate the stability of these constructed thin-shell wormholes under linear perturbations preserving the cylindrical symmetry and also study the effects of charge on its stability. It turns out that there exist both unstable and stable wormhole solutions depending on different parameters involved in the equation of state.  相似文献
