Basalts from the Quaternary Newer Volcanics Province in southeasternAustralia have a large diversity in their chemical and Nd, Srand Os isotopic compositions. Plains series olivine tholeiitesand Cones series nepheline hawaiites have distinctive isotopiccompositions and are clearly not related to each other by asimple genetic process. The Pliocene to Recent lavas, dyke rocks, and cognate xenolithsof Santorini island group belong to four distinct series, eachof high-alumina basalt-andesite-dacite type. The oldest seriesincludes hornblende dacites and minor basaltic andesites. Theformer contain hornblende-rich cognate xenoliths of basalticcomposition, which consist essentially of crystals ‘floating’in residual acid liquid (glass). The chemical variation of theseries, like that of lavas of volcanic centres north-west ofSantorini, is of ‘calc-alkali’ type. The second and third series consist of a range of lavas frombasalt to rhyodacite. No hydrous mineral occurs as a stablephase. Augite is the phenocrystal pyroxene of basalts; augiteand hypersthene of andesites and dacites. The groundmass pyroxenesof basalts and most andesites are augite and pigeonite, whiledistinctive hornblende xenocryst-bearing andesites of the secondseries, and acid lavas of both second and third, carry augiteand hypersthene in the groundmass. Interstitial glass increasesin proportion from basalts to andesites, and forms a major componentof acid lavas. The second series, like the oldest, lacks absoluteiron enrichment. The third, however, shows weak iron enrichmentof andesitic relative to basaltic compositions. Of the youngest (historic) series, only the acid members (hyalodacites)have been extruded as lavas. The more basic members are representedby non-cumulate xenoliths of basaltic to andesitic compositionwhich, like those of the oldest series, consist of a mesh ofcrystals set in abundant glass. This modern series also displaysfeeble absolute iron enrichment. The compositional range of minerals other than plagioclase isvery limited in the two xenolithic series, but much greaterin the two lava series. Glass compositions are virtually constantwithin individual series. Estimates of temperatures and oxygenfugacities of Fe-Ti oxide mineral equilibration, and deductionsfrom liquid compositional trends indicate that the oldest serieswas characterized by higher fO2, and fH2O, and lower temperaturesthan the three younger, ‘dry’ series. Its silicaenrichment trend appears to have been controlled chiefly byfractionation of silica-poor hornblende, rather than magnetiteas in the younger series. The presence, in all series, of xenolithsof gabbroic cumulates, and the constancy of glass compositionssuggests that each series was generated by the tapping of adifferentiating highalumina basalt magma in a high level magmachamber.  相似文献

High-grade metasedimentary enclaves in granites can be usedto directly characterize the lower and mid crust. Enclaves inthe Silurian S-type Deddick Granodiorite, SE Australia, havechemical and Nd–Sr isotopic compositions broadly similarto Ordovician–Silurian clastic sedimentary rocks throughoutthe fold belt. SHRIMP U–Pb ages of detrital zircons inthe enclaves indicate Early Ordovician maximum depositionalages for their psammitic–pelitic precursors. Patternsof zircon inheritance show the same  相似文献

The melting relations of two proposed crustal source compositionsfor rhyolitic magmas of the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ), New Zealand, have been studied in a piston-cylinder apparatus at 10 kb totalpressure and a range of water activities generated by H2O-CO2vapour. Starting materials were glasses of intermediate composition(65 wt.% Si02 representing a metaluminous ‘I-type’dacite and a peraluminous ‘S-type’ greywacke. Crystallizationexperiments were carried out over the temperature range 675to 975?C, with aH2O values of approximately 1?0, 0?75, 0?5,and 0?25. Talc-pyrex furnace assemblies imposed oxygen fugacitiesclose to quartz-fayalite-magnetite buffer conditions. Assemblages in both compositions remain saturated with quartzand plagioclase through 675–700?C at high aH2O, 725–750?Cat aH2O0?5, and 800–875?C at aH2O0?25, corresponding to<60–70% melting. Concentrations of refractory mineralcomponents (Fe, Mg, Mn, P, Ti) in liquids increase throughoutthis melting interval with increasing temperature and decreasingaH2O. Biotite and hornblende are the only mafic phases presentnear the solidus in the dacite, compared with biotite, garnet, gedritic orthoamphibole, and tschermakitic clinoamphibole inthe greywacke. Near-solidus melting reactions are of the type:biotite + quartz + plagioclase = amphibole ? garnet, potentiallyreleasing H2O for dehydration melting in the greywacke, butproducing larger amounts of hornblende and releasing littleH2O in the dacite. At aH2O0?25 and temperatures 825–850?C,amphibole dehydration produces anhydrous mineral phases typicalof granulite fades assemblages (clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, plagioclase?quartz in the dacite; garnet, orthopyroxene, plagioclase?quartzin the greywacke) coexisting with melt proportions as low as40%. Hornblendce-saturated liquids in the dacite are weaklyperaluminous (0?3–1?6 wt.% normative C—within therange of peraluminous TVZ rhyolites), whereas, at aH2O0?25 andtemperatures 925?C, metaluminous partial melt compositions (upto 1?8 wt.% normative Di) coexist with plagioclase, orthopyroxene, and clinopyroxene. At all water activities, partial melts ofthe greywacke are uniformly more peraluminous (1?5–2?6wt.% normative C), reflecting their saturation in the componentsof more aluminous mafic minerals, particularly garnet and Al-richorthopyroxene. A metaluminous source for the predominantly Di-normativeTVZ rhyolites is therefore indicated. With decreasing aH2O the stability fields of plagioclase andquartz expand, whereas that of biotite contracts. These changesare reflected in the proportions of normative salic componentsin partial melts of both the dacite and greywacke. At high aH2O,partial melts are rich in An and Ab and poor in Or (trondhjemitic-tonalitic);with decreasing aH2O they become notably poorer in An and richerin Or (granodioritic-granitic). These systematic variationsin salic components observed in experimental metaluminous tostrongly peraluminous melts demonstrate that a wide varietyof granitoid magmas may be produced from similar source rocksdepending upon P-T-aH2O conditions attending partial melting. Some peraluminous granitoids, notably trondhjemitic leucosomesin migmatites, and sodic granodiorites and granites emplacedat deep crustal levels, have bulk compositions similar to nearsolidus melt compositions in both the dacite and greywacke, indicating possible derivation by anatexis without the involvementof a significant restite component.  相似文献

Lavas from the 1967 Halemaumau eruption and picrites eruptedin August 1968 at Hiiaka Crater and along the east-rift zonehave the same incompatible element ratios, a feature consistentwith a comagmatic origin. Competing hypotheses for the relationnshipbetween the picrites and basalts are accumulation of olivinein a basaltic melt similar in composition to the Halemaumaubasalts or fractionation of olivine from a primitive picriticmelt to produce the basalts. The results of thermodynamic modelingand major element trends on element ratio diagrams disprovethe first hypothesis but are consistent with the second, fractionation.Thermodynamic modeling provides further tests of the fractionationhypothesis in the form of predicted phase compositions. Predictedand observed phase compositions do not differ significantly. As predicted by modeling, late crystallizing augite and plagioclasein the east-rift picrites are similar to early crystallizingaugite and plagioclase in the Halemaumau basalts. These resultsare all consistent with the hypothesis that primitive picriticmelts with more than 15% MgO fractionated along a liquid lineof descent from the Hiiaka picrites to the Halemaumau basalts. The original magma entered the volcano, probably near its baseon the ocean floor. Part ascended and differentiated under Halemaumauand part erupted at Hiika, 5 km down the east-rift with littlechemical modification. More extensively crystallized picritesthat represent fractionation stages between the Hiiaka Craterpicrites and the Halemaumau basalts erupted another 4?5 and19?5 km down rift from Hiiaka, ending the August, 1968 eruption.  相似文献

Lavas from Heard Island, located on the Kerguelen Plateau inthe southern Indian Ocean, exhibit the largest range (e.g.,87Sr/86Sr=0.7047–0.7079) of isotopic compositions yetobserved on a single oceanic island. Isotopic compositions arewell correlated and are accompanied by systematic changes inincompatible trace element ratios, particularly those involvingNb. These variations are interpreted as resulting from mixingbetween two components. One is characterized by high 87Sr/86Sr,low 206Pb/204Pb and 143Nd/144Nd ratios, and negative Nb andEu anomalies, and is derived ultimately from the upper continentalcrust. The other has lower 87Sr/86Sr, and higher 206Pb/204Pband 143Nd/144Nd ratios, and lacks the depletions in Nb and Eu.Two possible compositions are considered for the low-87Sr/86Srcomponent of the source. The first is at the low-87Sr/86Sr endof the Heard Island data array, represented most closely bylavas from the Laurens Peninsula. However, trace element variationssuggest that these lavas might not be representive of the Heardplume. The second is close to the low-87Sr/86Sr end of the isotopicarray for lavas from the main volcano. In this case a lithosphericmantle origin is suggested for the Laurens Peninsula lavas. The relationships between isotopic data, major element compositions, and incompatible trace element ratios indicate that the continent-derivedmaterial is probably present in the mantle source, where itmakes a maximum contribution of <4 wt.% for all but one HeardIsland sample. However, if the Kerguelen Plateau is a submergedcontinental block, shallow-level contamination cannot be ruledout. The binary mixing model developed to explain the Heard Islandgeochemical variations is extended to include other Indian Oceanoceanic island and mid-ocean ridge basalts (OIB and MORB). Weshow that isotopic compositions of Indian Ocean OIB are consistentwith sampling of a regional reservoir in which the same twocomponents exist in variable proportions (generally 1–5wt.% of the continent-derived component). The distinctive isotopiccompositions of Indian Ocean MORB are consistent with mixingof a similar component into an Atlantic-or Pacific-like MORBmantle source. The relatively unradiogenic 206Pb/204Pb isotopiccompositions of these ‘enriched’ Indian Ocean mantlecomponents are unlike any present-day marine sediments and indicatethat their source has had 238U/204Pb ratios (µ) much lowerthan typical upper continental crust for > 1 Ga. These agespre-date the formation of Gondwana (600-130 Ma) and thereforedo not support sediment subduction beneath Gondwana as the causeof enrichment in the sub-Indian Ocean mantle. We propose thatthe enrichment of Indian Ocean OIB sources was due to subductionof upper-crustal material beneath a Proterozoic precursor ofGondwana at 1–2 Ga. The enrichment of the Indian OceanMORB sources could have had a similar origin, or could havebeen derived from sub-continental lithospheric mantle returnedto the asthenospheric mantle, perhaps during the break-up ofGondwana (200–130 Ma).  相似文献

The Batur volcanic field (BVF), in Bali, Indonesia, underwenttwo successive caldera-forming eruptions that resulted in thedeposition of silicic ignimbrites. The magmas erupted duringand between these eruptions show a broad range of compositionsfrom low-SiO2 andesite to high-SiO2 dacite. On the basis oftheir geochemistry and mineralogy these magmas may be assignedto six groups: (1) homogeneous andesites with phenocryst compositionsessentially in equilibrium with the whole-rock composition;(2) remobilized crystal-rich low-SiO2 andesites with resorbedphenocrysts in equilibrium with the whole-rock composition;(3) mixed low-SiO2 dacite with a relatively large range of phenocrystcompositions, with most phenocrysts slightly too evolved tobe in equilibrium with the whole-rock; (4) extensively mixedlow-SiO2 dacites with a very large and discontinuous range ofphenocryst compositions, with most phenocrysts either more Mg-richor more evolved than the equilibrium compositions; (5) remobilizedcrystal-rich low-SiO2 dacites with resorbed and euhedral phenocrysts;(6) homogeneous high-SiO2 dacites lacking evidence for magmamixing and showing narrow ranges of phenocryst compositionsin equilibrium with the whole-rock composition. This range ofsilicic magmas is interpreted to reflect a combination of closed-and open-system fractional crystallization, magma mixing andremobilization of cumulate piles by heating. The variety ofmagmas erupted simultaneously during the caldera-forming eruptionssuggests that the magmatic system consisted of several independentreservoirs of variable composition and degree of crystallization. The magmatic evolution of individual reservoirs varied fromclosed-system fractional crystallization to fully open-systemevolution, thereby resulting in simultaneous production of magmaswith contrasted compositions and mineralogy. Extensive emptyingof the magmatic system during the caldera-forming eruptionsled to successive or simultaneous eruption of several reservoirs.
