Macroseismic intensity, a useful measure of earthquake effects, is still applied in a wide range of seismological applications like seismic hazard assessments, attenuation relationships, etc. Isoseismals represent the spatial distribution of macroseismic intensities, and their shapes depend on source properties, lithosphere structures, tectonic line orientations, site geology, and topography. The applications ask for both the higher number of isoseismal maps, and their standardization and homogenization. The point kriging gridding method for an automatic computer drawing of isoseismal maps was delivered. Smoothing rates and numerical parameters used in the kriging algorithm were tested on macroseismic data of Greek earthquakes representing different tectonic and geomorphological regimes. The optimum kriging default option was defined. Its application for four Greek earthquakes is presented and discussed from the viewpoint of a broad use in recent macroseismology. A brief history of operation of the mechanicalseismographs in Greece and the application of atechnique for converting analog seismograms to digitaltraces in a form suitable for further processing orarchiving are presented in this study. A short historyabout the installation of mechanical seismographs inGreece, the characteristics of these instruments, areference on the usage of historical records, as wellas a presentation of the procedure followed from theidentification of the record to the archiving it as adigital file have been included.  相似文献

A regional telemetric network of twelve digital broad-band seismic stations has been in full operation since the beginning of 1999, in Greece, operated by the Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory of Athens (GI-NOA). On 7 September1999, a ML = 5.4 main shock occurred just 18 kilometers to the north of the Greek capital Athens, causing severe damage and loss of life. The broad band network recorded the seismic sequence and the main shock and 18 aftershocks were selected in order to determine their seismic source parameters and scaling relations by the spectral analysis method. The results indicate a main shock seismic momentM0 = 5.7 × 1024 dyn-cm in general agreementwith that reported by other agencies and two different source models were used to determine the respective fault radii and displacements for comparison and evaluation purposes. In addition, by investigating source parameters for the aftershocks, it was found that the seismic moment correlates very well with the earthquake magnitude (ML) and corner frequency (FC) through the following relationships:Log M0 = 1.80ML + 15.19 and Log M0 = - 3.17FC + 22.09,respectively. These results and scaling relations are in general agreement with those obtained by other studies and in view of the fact that digital seismic instrumentation is now expanding in Greece, these first results from spectral analysis of digital broad band data can be considered useful for future relevant investigations.  相似文献

After a repose time of several years, intense, shallow seismic activity started at the end of 1995 in the volcanic region of Nisyros island. By the end of October 1997, hundreds of shocks had been recorded, the largest one being that of 27 August 1997 with Ms  = 5.3. The activity is highly clustered in space and time, while the b -value of the magnitude-frequency relation was found equal to 1.67. Similar b -values were determined from Nisyros seismicity registered between 1911 and 1980 and from a 1997 microearthquake dataset. These properties seem to be a characteristic of the region, rather than precursor of a forthcoming eruption and make Nisyros similar to other large calderas of the Earth where the episodic unrest with local swarm-like earthquake sequences separated by months or years is a typical pattern that do not culminate in a volcanic eruption.  相似文献
