During September 2008 and February 2009, the NR/V Alliance extensively sampled the waters of the Sea of Marmara within the
framework of the Turkish Straits System (TSS) experiment coordinated by the NATO Undersea Research Centre. The observational
effort provided an opportunity to set up realistic numerical experiments for modeling the observed variability of the Marmara
Sea upper layer circulation at mesoscale resolution over the entire basin during the trial period, complementing relevant
features and forcing factors revealed by numerical model results with information acquired from in situ and remote sensing
datasets. Numerical model solutions from realistic runs using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) produce a general
circulation in the Sea of Marmara that is consistent with previous knowledge of the circulation drawn from past hydrographic
measurements, with a westward meandering current associated with a recurrent large anticyclone. Additional idealized numerical
experiments illuminate the role various dynamics play in determining the Sea of Marmara circulation and pycnocline structure.
Both the wind curl and the strait flows are found to strongly influence the strength and location of the main mesoscale features.
Large displacements of the pycnocline depth were observed during the sea trials. These displacements can be interpreted as
storm-driven upwelling/downwelling dynamics associated with northeasterly winds; however, lateral advection associated with
flow from the Straits also played a role in some displacements. 相似文献

The Mediterranean Forecasting System (MFS) has been operational for a decade, and is continuously providing forecasts and
analyses for the region. These forecasts comprise local- and basin-scale information of the environmental state of the sea
and can be useful for tracking oil spills and supporting search-and-rescue missions. Data assimilation is a widely used method
to improve the forecast skill of operational models and, in this study, the three-dimensional variational (OceanVar) scheme
has been extended to include Argo float trajectories, with the objective of constraining and ameliorating the numerical output
primarily in terms of the intermediate velocity fields at 350 m depth. When adding new datasets, it is furthermore crucial
to ensure that the extended OceanVar scheme does not decrease the performance of the assimilation of other observations, e.g.,
sea-level anomalies, temperature, and salinity. Numerical experiments were undertaken for a 3-year period (2005–2007), and
it was concluded that the Argo float trajectory assimilation improves the quality of the forecasted trajectories with ~15%,
thus, increasing the realism of the model. Furthermore, the MFS proved to maintain the forecast quality of the sea-surface
height and mass fields after the extended assimilation scheme had been introduced. A comparison between the modeled velocity
fields and independent surface drifter observations suggested that assimilating trajectories at intermediate depth could yield
improved forecasts of the upper ocean currents. 相似文献

The turbulent mixing of hydrothermal hot fluid with cold seawater creates large chemical gradients at a small spatial scale that may induce variable physiological and biochemical adaptations within the vent fauna. The adaptation to such a variable environment by the vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus relies on a dual symbiosis hosted in the gills, and digestion of particulate organic matter. The surrounding environment not only provides the necessary energy sources and suspended organic particles for the vent mussel nutrition, but also potentially toxic compounds such as metals. Our main goal was to see if there is a relation between metal accumulation in mussel organs and the chemical characteristics of their close environment. Mussels were collected at six locations in a cold part of the Eiffel Tower fluid-seawater mixing zone, characterized by distinct chemical compositions. Metals (Cd, Cu, Fe and Zn) and metallothioneins were quantified in the gills and digestive gland. The physiological condition of the sampled mussels was also evaluated using tissues and gill indices. Our study indicates that the accumulation of metals in B. azoricus is related to their spatial distribution and linked to fine scale environmental conditions that influence the physiological status of the organism. 相似文献

The variability of the bioaccumulation of metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) was extensively studied in the mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus from five hydrothermal vent sites inside three main vent fields of increasing depth along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge: Menez Gwen, Lucky Strike and Rainbow. Metal bioaccumulation varied greatly between vent fields and even between sites inside a vent field with B. azoricus showing a great capacity to accumulate metals. The bioaccumulation of these metals also varied significantly among tissues. The main target was the gills where metals were mainly associated with soluble compounds whereas in the digestive gland they were mainly associated with insoluble compounds. Storage of metals under insoluble forms in B. azoricus seems to be a major pathway for the detoxification of both essential and non-essential metals. Mussels from the studied fields can be discriminated following their metallic load but the segregation relies partially on the composition of the metal-enriched fluids. 相似文献

Hydroponic experiments have been performed in order to identify the co-occurring geochemical and biological processes affecting the Ca isotopic compositions within plants. To test the influence of the Ca concentration and pH of the nutritive solution on the Ca isotopic composition of the different plant organs, four experimental conditions were chosen combining two different Ca concentrations (5 and 60 ppm) and two pHs (4 and 6). The study was performed on rapid growing bean plants in order to have a complete growth cycle. Several organs (root, stem, leaf, reproductive) were sampled at two different growth stages (10 days and 6 weeks of culture) and prepared for Ca isotopic measurements. The results allow to identify three Ca isotopic fractionation levels. The first one takes place when Ca enters the lateral roots, during Ca adsorption on cation-exchange binding sites in the apoplasm. The second one takes place when Ca is bound to the polygalacturonic acids (pectins) of the middle lamella of the xylem cell wall. Finally, the last fractionation occurs in the reproductive organs, also caused by cation-exchange processes with pectins. However, the cell wall structures of these organs and/or number of available exchange sites seem to be different to those of the xylem wall. These three physico-chemical fractionation mechanisms allow to enrich the organs in the light 40Ca isotope. The amplitude of the Ca isotopic fractionation within plant organs is highly dependent on the composition of the nutritive solution: low pH (4) and Ca concentrations (5 ppm) have no effect on the biomass increase of the plants but induce smaller fractionation amplitudes compared to those obtained from other experimental conditions. Thus, Ca isotopic signatures of bean plants are controlled by the external nutritive medium. This study highlights the potential of Ca isotopes to be applied in plant physiology (to identify Ca uptake, circulation and storage mechanisms within plants) and in biogeochemistry (to identify Ca recycling, Ca content and pH evolutions in soil solutions through time). 相似文献

The near-surface circulation in the Black Sea is studied with the data of 54 satellite-tracked drifters in the period 1999–2003. The drifter trajectories confirm the prevalence of the Rim Current trapped on the continental slope (between water depths of 400 and 1800 m) along the periphery of the basin where sub-inertial speeds can reach 1 m/s. Some drifters were found to complete an entire basin loop with the Rim Current in 90–180 days. Meanders and loops in the tracks prove the existence of mostly anticyclonic circulation features inshore of the Rim Current, including strong signatures of the Batumi and Sevastopol eddies. They also reveal the presence of cyclonic and anticyclonic currents in most areas of the Black Sea. Pseudo-Eulerian statistics (averaged in 50-km bins), that is, mean currents and the corresponding velocity variances, show a strong and highly fluctuating signature of the Rim Current and the enhanced variability associated with the Batumi and Sevastopol eddies. The latter is also collocated with the branching of the Rim Current southwest of the Crimean Peninsula. It is shown that the kinetic energy is mainly in the mean for the Rim Current and in the velocity fluctuations elsewhere. Seasonal variability is also explored. The Rim Current tends to form a stronger single loop trapped on the continental slope in winter/spring, whereas in summer/fall the mean circulation is more meandering, recirculation cells appear in the central areas and the bifurcation southwest of Crimea is enhanced. There is some evidence of the reversal of sense of rotation of the currents in the Batumi Eddy region, changing from mainly anticyclonic in summer/fall to cyclonic in winter/spring. Mean residence times were calculated in the 50-km bins, with values ranging from a few days in the central basin to 8 days in the northwestern coastal area. Globally, the kinetic energy levels were found higher in winter–spring and lower in summer–fall, with a significant maximum in March. Single-particle Lagrangian statistics were computed for the entire basin, for the two extended seasons, and in selected local areas. Velocity variance, diffusivity and Lagrangian integral time scales are generally larger in the zonal direction. Globally, the velocity variance is 174 and 127 cm2/s2 in the zonal and meridional directions, respectively, after the removal of the pseudo-Eulerian mean circulation. For the zonal direction, a diffusivity value of 4.5×107 cm2/s and Lagrangian integral time and space scales of 3 days and 34 km were found. For the meridional direction, these statistics amount to 4.5×107 cm2/s, 1.2 days and 12.2 km. Seasonal and geographical variations of these Lagrangian statistics were also assessed, showing variations between 1.9 (0.9) 107 and 8.3 (2.0) 107 cm2/s for the diffusivity in the zonal (meridional) direction. Integral time and space scales vary between 1 and 4.7 days, and 8.8 and 58 km, respectively. Seasonal differences are significant only in the zonal direction, where the diffusivity increases from 3.1×107 to 5.9×107 cm2/s and the integral scales vary from 2.1 days (24 km) to 3.8 days (44 km) from summer/fall to winter/spring. 相似文献

Ocean transport and dispersion processes are at the present time simulated using Lagrangian stochastic models coupled with Eulerian circulation models that are supplying analyses and forecasts of the ocean currents at unprecedented time and space resolution. Using the Lagrangian approach, each particle displacement is described by an average motion and a fluctuating part. The first one represents the advection associated with the Eulerian current field of the circulation models while the second one describes the sub-grid scale diffusion. The focus of this study is to quantify the sub-grid scale diffusion of the Lagrangian models written in terms of a horizontal eddy diffusivity. Using a large database of drifters released in different regions of the Mediterranean Sea, the Lagrangian sub-grid scale diffusion has been computed, by considering different regimes when averaging statistical quantities. In addition, the real drifters have been simulated using a trajectory model forced by OGCM currents, focusing on how the Lagrangian properties are reproduced by the simulated trajectories. 相似文献

Transport properties in small-scale coastal flows: relative dispersion from VHF radar measurements in the Gulf of La Spezia 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0

Lagrangian transport characteristics in the Gulf of La Spezia, a 5 × 10-km area along the western coast of Italy, are investigated
using data collected from a very high frequency (VHF) radar system with 250 m and 30-min resolution and two clusters of Coastal
Dynamics Experiment surface drifters during 2 weeks in the summer of 2007. The surface drifters are found to follow the temporal
and spatial evolution of the finite-scale Lyapunov exponents (FSLEs) computed by the VHF radar, indicating the precision of
both the radar measurements and the diagnostic FSLE in mapping accurately the transport pathways. In light of this agreement,
an analysis of the relative dispersion is conducted. It is found that the average FSLE value varies within a narrow range
of 4 day-1 £ l £ 7 day-14 \;\mbox{day}^{-1} \leq \lambda \leq 7 \;\mbox{day}^{-1} and displays an exponential regime over the entire extent of the measurements. The dynamical implication is that relative
dispersion is controlled nonlocally, namely by slow, persistent, energetic mesoscale structures as opposed to the rapidly
evolving high-gradient small-scale turbulent features. The value of the exponent is about an order of magnitude larger than
those found in previous modeling studies and analysis of SCULP data in the Gulf of Mexico but somewhat smaller than that estimated
from CLIMODE drifters in the Gulf Stream region. Scaling of the FSLE using a metric of resolved gradients of the Eulerian
fields in the form of a positive Okubo–Weiss criterion is useful, but not as precise as in modeling studies. The horizontal
flow convergence is found to have a small yet tangible effect on relative dispersion. 相似文献
