Constraining the composition of primitive kimberlite magma is not trivial. This study reconstructs a kimberlite melt composition using vesicular, quenched kimberlite found at the contact of a thin hypabyssal dyke. We examined the 4 mm selvage of the dyke where the most elongate shapes of the smallest calcite laths suggest the strongest undercooling. The analyzed bulk compositions of several 0.09-1.1 mm2 areas of the kimberlite free from macrocrysts were considered to be representative of the melt. The bulk analyses conducted with a new “chemical point-counting” technique were supplemented by modal estimates, studies of mineral compositions, and FTIR analysis of olivine phenocrysts. The melt was estimated to contain 26-29.5 wt% SiO2, ∼7 wt% of FeOT, 25.7-28.7 wt% MgO, 11.3-15 wt% CaO, 8.3-11.3 wt% CO2, and 7.6-9.4 wt% H2O. Like many other estimates of primitive kimberlite magma, the melt is too magnesian (Mg# = 0.87) to be in equilibrium with the mantle and thus cannot be primary. The observed dyke contact and the chemistry of the melt implies it is highly fluid (η = 101-103 Pa s at 1100-1000 °C) and depolymerized (NBO/T = 2.3-3.2), but entrains with 40-50% of olivine crystals increasing its viscosity. The olivine phenocrysts contain 190-350 ppm of water suggesting crystallization from a low SiO2 magma (aSiO2 below the olivine-orthopyroxene equilibrium) at 30-50 kb. Crystallization continued until the final emplacement at depths of few hundred meters which led to progressively more Ca- and CO2-rich residual liquids. The melt crystallised phlogopite (6-10%), monticellite (replaced by serpentine, ∼10%), calcite rich in Sr, Mg and Fe (19-27%), serpentine (29-31%) and minor amounts of apatite, ulvöspinel-magnetite, picroilmenite and perovskite. The observed content of H2O can be fully dissolved in the primitive melt at pressures greater than 0.8-1.2 kbar, whereas the amount of primary CO2 in the kimberlite exceeds CO2 soluble in the primitive kimberlite melt. A mechanism for retaining CO2 in the melt may require a separate fluid phase accompanying kimberlite ascent and later dissolution in residual carbonatitic melt. Deep fragmentation of the melt as a result of volatile supersaturation is not inevitable if kimberlite magma has an opportunity to evolve.  相似文献

Waylandite crystallises in space group R $ \overline 3 $ ? m, with the cell parameters: a?=?7.0059(7) Å, c?=?16.3431(12) Å and V?=?694.69(11) Å3. The crystal structure has been refined to R 1?=?3.76%. Waylandite has an alunite-type structure comprised of a rhombohedral stacking of (001) composite layers of corner-shared AlO6 octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra, with (Bi,Sr,Ca) atoms occupying icosahedrally coordinated sites between the layers.  相似文献

High spatial resolution measurements of current velocity performed by the shipboard mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) in the lateral boundary layer of the southern Gulf of Finland during two 5-day periods are described and analysed with a focus on the dominant dynamics. The measurement site represents a small (15×20 km), relatively deep (up to 100 m) bay opened to large-scale estuarine circulation. The measurement period was characterized by calm winds and a strong seasonal pycnocline (Brunt-Väisälä frequencyN=6–9*10−2 s−1). The quasi-steady velocity field revealed polarization of currents along the shore whereas an intensive baroclinic coastal jet was observed over a cross-shore scale of 1–2 km. The level of vertical separation of the alongshore flow coincided with the pycnocline at the coast, but was shifted below it in the offshore region. The cross-shore flow was considerably weaker and showed a three-layer structure with an opposite phase between the first and second surveys. It is suggested that the observed jet resembles a non-locally forced eastward propagating coastally trapped wave. In the offshore area the alongshore flow field satisfies local geostrophic balance quite well, except in the pycnocline where strong vertical stratification exerts considerable vertical stress. As vertical velocity shear is well correlated with vertical stratification, the horizontal advection prevails over vertical mixing. Horizontal inhomogeneities of density distribution are partly explained by vertical velocities with an estimated magnitude of less than 0·6 mm/s and the spatial pattern following bottom topography.  相似文献

The Gulf of Finland is a 400-km long and 48–135-km wide tributary estuary of the Baltic Sea featuring the longitudinal two-layer estuarine flow modified by transverse circulation. Longitudinal volume transport in the deep layer is investigated by decomposing it into an averaged, slowly changing estuarine component (due to large-scale density gradients, river discharge and mean wind stress) and wind-driven fluctuating component. The derived expression relates the total deep-layer transport to the projection of wind stress fluctuation to a site-specific direction. The relationship is tested and calibrated by the results from numerical experiments carried out with the three-dimensional baroclinic circulation model. For the entrance to the Gulf of Finland, winds from northeast support standard estuarine circulation and winds from southwest work against the density-driven and riverine flow. The deep estuarine transport may be reversed if the southwesterly wind component exceeds the mean value by 4–5.5 m s−1. According to the data from hydrographic observations in the western Gulf of Finland, an event of advective halocline disappearance was documented in August 1998. Comparison of the deep-water transport estimates calculated from the wind data in 1998 with the observed salinity variations showed that the events of rapid decay of estuarine stratification were coherent with the estimated reversals of deep-layer volume transport, i.e. events of salt wedge export from the gulf.  相似文献

Recent advances in electron microprobe technology including development of layered synthetic microstructures, more stable electronics and better matrix-correction programs facilitated routine microanalysis of the light elements in coal. Utilizing an appropriately equipped electron micro-probe with suitable standards, it is now possible to analyze directly the light elements (C, O and N, if abundant) in coal macerals and other kerogen. The analytical results are both accurate compared to ASTM methods and highly precise, and provide an opportunity to access the variation in coal chemistry at the micrometre scale. Our experiments show that analyses using a 10 kV accelerating voltage and 10 nA beam current yield the most reliable data and result in minimum sample damage and contamination. High sample counts were obtained for C, O and N using a bi-elemental nickel-carbon pseudo-crystal (2d = 9.5 nm) as an analyzing crystal.Vitrinite isolated from anthracite rank coal proves the best carbon standard and is more desirable than graphite which has higher porosity, whereas lower rank vitrinite is too heterogeneous to use routinely as a standard. Other standards utilized were magnesite for oxygen and BN for nitrogen. No significant carbon, oxygen or nitrogen X-ray peak shifts or peak-shape changes occur between standards and the kerogen analyzed. Counting rates for carbon and oxygen were found to be constant over a range of beam sizes and currents for counting times up to 160 s. Probe-determined carbon and oxygen contents agree closely with those reported from ASTM analyses. Nitrogen analyses compare poorly to ASTM values which probably is in response to overlap between the nitrogen K α peak with the carbon K-adsorption edge and the overall low nitrogen content of most of our samples.Our results show that the electron microprobe technique provides accurate compositional data for both minor and major elements in coal without the necessity and inherent problems associated with mechanically isolating macerals. Studies to date have demonstrated the level of compositional variability within and between macerals in suites of Canadian coals.  相似文献
