Zoned garnet and amphibole occur in metabasites of the KraubathMassif, Eastern Alps, that contain relic magmatic clinopyroxene.The amphibole composition gradually changes from core (XMg =0·83) to rim (XMg = 0·6–0·7). A numberof compositional varieties of garnet occur in the metabasite.An older porphyroblastic garnet (Py23–27, Alm41–43,Grs29–33) has two different compositional domains, onerelatively rich in Mg (Py27–30) and the other rich inCa (Grs35–38) with a low Mg (Py20–25) content. Theyoungest variety, which forms rims on, or microveins in, theporphyroblastic garnet, has high Ca and low Mg (Grs40–57,Py2–7, Alm46–51). The amphibole cores and garnetporphyroblasts are interpreted to represent minerals formedduring Variscan regional metamorphism under amphibolite-faciesconditions. Alpine metamorphism is represented by the most recentCa-rich and Mg-poor variety of garnet that coexists with theamphibole rims, epidote and chlorite. Fracturing in the porphyroblasticgarnet probably originated during retrogression of the Variscanamphibolite-facies assemblages. Textural relations suggest thatthe garnet in the microveins formed by dehydration of hydrousphases during an Alpine metamorphic overprint that reached PTconditions of 550–583°C at 1·0 GPa. Abstract

An in situ microbial filter technology is being tested and developed for remediating migrating subsurface plumes contaminated with low concentrations of trichloroethylene (TCE). The current focus is the establishment of a replenishable bioactive zone (catalytic filter) along expanding plume boundaries by the injection of a representative methanotrophic bacterium, Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b. This microbial filter strategy has been successfully demonstrated using emplaced, attached resting cells (no methane additions) in a 1.1 m flow-through test bed loaded with water-saturated sand. Two separate 24 h pulses of TCE (109 ppb and 85 ppb), one week apart, were pumped through the system at a flow velocity of 15 mm h?1; no TCE (< 0.5 ppb) was detected on the downstream side of the microbial filter. Subsequent excavation of the wet sand confirmed the existence of a TCE-bioactive zone 21 days after it had been created. An enhanced longevity of the cellular, soluble-form methane monooxygenase produced by this methanotroph is a result of the laboratory bioreactor culturing conditions. Additional experiments with cells in sealed vials and emplaced in the 1.1 m test bed yielded a high resting-cell finite TCE biotransformation capacity of about 0.25 mg per mg of bacteria; this is suitable for a planned sand-filled trench field demonstration at a Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory site.  相似文献

Scapolite and other halogen-rich minerals (phlogopite, amphibole,apatite, titanite and clinohumite) occur in some high-pressureamphibolite facies calc-silicates and orthopyroxene-bearingrocks at Sare Sang (Sar e Sang or Sar-e-Sang), NE Afghanistan.The calc-silicates are subdivided into two groups: garnet-bearingand garnet-free, phlogopite-bearing. Besides garnet and/or phlogopite,the amphibolite facies mineral assemblages in the calc-silicatesinclude clinopyroxene, calcite, quartz and one or more of theminerals scapolite, plagioclase, K-feldspar, titanite, apatiteand rarely olivine. Orthopyroxene-bearing rocks consist of clinopyroxene,garnet, plagioclase, scapolite, amphibole, quartz, calcite andaccessory dolomite and alumosilicate (kyanite?). Retrogradephases in the rocks are plagioclase, scapolite, calcite, amphibole,sodalite, haüyne, lazurite, biotite, apatite and dolomite.The clinopyroxene is mostly diopside and rarely also hedenbergite.Aegirine and omphacite with a maximum jadeite content of 29mol % were also found. Garnet from the calc-silicates is Grs45–95Py0–2and from the orthopyroxene-bearing rocks is Grs10–15Py36–43.Peak P–T metamorphic conditions, calculated using availableexchange thermobarometers and the TWQ program, are 750°Cand 1·3–1·4 GPa. Depending on the rock type,the scapolite exhibits a wide range of composition (from EqAn= 0·07, XCl =0·99 to EqAn = 0·61, XCl =0·07).Equilibria calculated for scapolite and coexisting phases atpeak metamorphic conditions yield XCO2 = 0·03–0·15.XNaCl (fluid), obtained for scapolite, ranges between 0·04and 0·99. Partitioning of F and Cl between coexistingphases was calculated for apatite–biotite and amphibole–biotite.Fluorapatite is present in calc-silicates, but orthopyroxene-bearingrocks contain chlorapatite. Cl preferentially partitions intoamphibole with respect to biotite. All these rocks have sufferedvarious degrees of retrogression, which resulted in removalof halogens, CO2 and S. Halogen- and S-bearing minerals formedduring retrogression and metasomatism are fluorapatite, sodalite,amphibole, scapolite, clinohumite, haüyne, pyrite, andlazurite, which either form veins or replace earlier formedphases. The Pozalagua Quarry in the Basque–Cantabrian Basin of northern Spain exposes a unique set of fault‐associated dolomites that can be studied on a decametre scale. The dolomites developed along the Pozalagua Fault system in slope‐deposited limestones of Albian age. Following marine phreatic diagenesis, the limestones were subject to meteoric karst formation. The resulting cavities were filled either by angular limestone fragments in a black clay‐rich matrix, or by cave floor/pond (now dolomitized) sediments. The subsequent diagenetic history reflects repeated periods of fracturing, fluid expulsion, dissolution and cementation. Contrasting fluid pulses resulted in the formation of a network of hydrothermal karst and the subsequent development of coarse‐crystalline calcite cement, zebra dolomite, recrystallized coarse‐crystalline dolomite, elongated blue–grey coarse‐crystalline dolomite cement in the open fault and, finally, coarse‐crystalline saddle dolomite. Decimetre‐size reworked host‐rock fragments present in the latter two dolomite phases probably reflect roof collapse fragments of a cave system that developed along the Pozalagua Fault system. However, there are also metre‐scale host‐rock fragments that apparently ‘float’ in the coarse‐crystalline saddle dolomites, implying that either fragment assimilation was a widespread process or violent expulsion of fluids occurred along the Pozalagua Fault system. The presence of pre‐dolomite and post‐dolomite stylolites, parallel to bedding, supports a linkage between the diagenetic events and the Late Albian tectonism that affected the region.  相似文献

Abstract: FIAs have been used extensively for more than a decade to unravel deformation and metamorphic puzzles. Orogenic processes developing early during the history or orogenesis challenge scientists because compositional layering in rocks always reactivates where multiple deformations have occurred, leaving little evidence of the history of foliation development preserved in the matrix. The foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, USA contain a succession of four FIA sets (trends) that would not have been distinguishable if porphyroblasts had not grown during the multiple deformation events that affected these rocks or if they had rotated as these events took place. They reveal that both the partitioning of deformation and the location of isograds changed significantly as the deformation proceeded.  相似文献
