Solid waste samples from a reconnaissance study conducted at ore mining and milling sites were subjected to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency extraction procedure (EP) leaching test Sites visited included mines and mills extracting ores of antimony (Sb), mercury (Hg), vanadium (V), tungsten (W), and nickel (Ni). Samples analyzed included mine wastes, treatment pond solids, tailings, low grade ore, and other solid wastes generated at these facilities Analysis of the leachate from these tests indicates that none of the samples generated leachate in which the concentration of any toxic metal parameter exceeded EPA criteria levels for those metals. By volume, tailings generally constitute the largest amount of solid wastes generated, but these data indicate that with proper management and monitoring, current EPA criteria can be met for tailings and for most solid wastes associated with mining and milling of these metal ores. Long-term studies are needed to determine if leachate characteristics change with time and to assist in development of closure plans and post closure monitoring programs.  相似文献

Effects on sandy beach microfauna of soluble pollutants, such as might be associated with an oil spill, were investigated in terms of nitrate generation. Nitrate generation by the microfauna in small sand columns in the laboratory was severely inhibited by water-soluble fractions of crude oil, dispersant and oil/dispersant mixtures in order of increasing effects. Short-term effects of such pollutants on nutrient regeneration by exposed sandy beaches are discussed.  相似文献

The mangrove Avicennia marina var. australasica occurs on the temperate coastlines of New Zealand's north island and New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia in South East Australia. Mangroves are increasing in area with seaward expansion in New Zealand and landward expansion in temperate Australia. Their expansion has been viewed as unnatural. With pressure from residential and coastal development, planning and management authorities in both countries are being exerted to allow for the removal and destruction of mangroves, partly for protecting and re-instating other impacted habitats such as saltmarsh and mudflats and partly to maintain recreational and amenity values of coastal communities. Estuary management planning is a useful tool that can integrate and balance policy directions for mangroves and other estuarine habitats in a strategic manner. Mangroves should not be considered as ‘bad’ in isolation but viewed as part of the mosaic of tidal habitats important for estuary function and health.  相似文献

The most important natural function of exposed sandy beaches is the filtration of large volumes of sea water which are flushed through the interstitial pore system by the actions of tides and waves. In this process organic material is mineralized by the interstitial fauna and nutrients returned to the sea. This paper examines the physical effects of oil in blocking or reducing this filtration. Reduced filtration of sea water may be caused by prevention or retardation of interstitial water flow and/or decrease in pore space. The magnitude of the effects depends on the volume of oil, its state of weathering, its location on the beach and its degree of admixture with sand. It appears that under all but the heaviest conditions of pollution these effects are relatively small and only become significant in situ when discrete layers of weathered oil occur near the surface in the upper intertidal zone where maximum water input normally occurs.  相似文献

Effects of crude oil on the supralittoral meiofauna of a sandy beach   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The supralittoral zone of an open sandy beach was dosed with crude oil and changes in the meiofauna monitored. Treatments included weathered and fresh oil on the surface, fresh oil mixed with dispersant on the surface and weathered oil at the water table, all in layers 0·8 cm thick. In all cases the meiofauna was reduced 1 month after dosing but numbers had returned to normal by 5 months except in the site dosed with fresh oil mixed with dispersant. Oil on the surface had greater effects than oil at the water table; fresh oil had a greater effect than weathered oil and fresh oil with dispersant was more toxic than fresh oil alone. Nematodes were least sensitive to the oil and oligochaetes more sensitive, their numbers being correlated with oil concentrations and depth in the substrate. It is concluded that, under all but the heaviest conditions of pollution in their environment, recovery from oil contamination should occur within 5 months in the meiofauna.  相似文献

Quartz-topaz rocks from the New England district, New South Wales, have mineralogical, textural and field relationships suggesting a magmatic origin. These rocks (called topazites) occur as dykes and sills intruding a biotite granite and sediments in a roof pendant. Where they have intruded into sediments, the topazites have a narrow aureole of induration or hornfels. One type of primary solid inclusion, thought to be silicate glass, has a composition ranging from that of the topazite towards that of nearby granite. Primary fluid inclusions contain an aqueous solution of alkali chlorides with concentrations of total salts to 57 wt%. These fluid inclusions indicate crystallization temperatures in the range 570–620° C, close to the experimentally determined solidus of a vapour-saturated, topaz-normative melt. The presence of primary fluid inclusions indicates crystallization of topazite following saturation of a granitic magma with water and the formation of immiscible silicate and aqueous phases. Partitioning of alkali metals into the aqueous phase left a silicate melt that could only crystallize quartz and topaz.  相似文献
