We investigated the ecological significance of alkaline phsophatase (APase) and alkaline phosphatase-hydrolyzable phosphorus (APHP) in the northern part of Gamak Bay, Korea. APase activity was detectable throughout the year, and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentration and APase activity are highly correlated and can be regarded as an indicator of DIP-limiting conditions. Also, a strong linear positive correlation between APase activity and Chl a concentration indicated that the major part of APase activity may have been induced by phytoplanktons. The APHP proportion in dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) was above ca. 30% from winter to spring and below ca. 15% from summer to autumn due to freshwater discharge and uptake by phytoplankton. APHP may play an important role in species competition in coastal area such as northern part of Gamak Bay where DIP is limiting. Thus, APase induction by phytoplanktons may be ecologically significant, allowing dominance by these organisms under DIP-limiting conditions.  相似文献

Using the moored MnO2-fiber method, we have obtained 38 determinations of Th and Pa isotope concentrations from 18 sites along the margin of the western North Pacific near Japan, from water depths of 1,330 to 5,873 m. From our data, we are able to show that (1)228Ra and227Ac are being supplied to the seawater from the slope sediments of Honshu, Japan, (2) our230Th and231Pa concentrations match those obtained byin situ pumping with a MnO2-fiber adsorber in the Japan and Izu-Ogasawara trenches but are significantly higher than those from the Panama and Guatemala basins, and (3) our232Th concentrations show a similar systematic decrease with depth as do those of trace metals like Mn, Al, Te and Bi whose concentrations are strongly controlled by particulate matter scavenging.In contrast, our data fail to show (1) that enhanced removal of230Th and231Pa by scavenging from the water column is taking place near the western margins and (2) that231Pa is being removed in preference to230Th from the water column to the marginal sediments. This is probably due to rapid mixing of the deep waters as compared to the scavenging rates of230Th and231Pa in the water column and at the sediment/seawater interface.  相似文献

This study investigated alkaline phosphatase (APase) activity and dissolved organic and inorganic phosphorus utilization by the harmful dinoflagellate Gymnodinium impudicum (Fraga et Bravo) Hansen et Moestrup isolated from the South Sea of Korea. Under conditions of limited phosphorus, observation of growth kinetics in batch culture yielded a maximum growth rate (μmax) of 0.41 /day and a half saturation constant (Ks) of 0.71 μM. In time-course experiments, APase was induced as dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentrations fell below 0.83 μM, a threshold near the estimated Ks; APase activity increased with further DIP depletion to a maximum of 0.70 pmol/cell/h in the senescent phase. Thus, Ks may be an important index of the threshold DIP concentration for APase induction. G. impudicum utilizes a wide variety of dissolved organic phosphorus compounds in addition to DIP. These results suggest that DIP limitation in the Southern Sea of Korea may have led to the spread of G. impudicum along with the harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides in recent years.  相似文献

A deep-sea Mn nodule handpicked from top of a 20 cm diameter North Pacific tripod core was directly counted by an α-spectrometer with a silicon surface barrier detector. A distinct 210Po peak was recorded for the nodule upper side in contact with bottom seawater. Based on the spectrum, the 210Po (supported by 210Pb with 22 year half life) is thought to be confined in the top few microns of the nodule. Since the 210Po peak diminishes considerably for the bottom side resting on sediment, nondestructive α-spectrometry is useful for determining the sea floor orientation of nodules. This method was tested for a western North Pacific dredged Mn nodule, and was successful in identifying the orientation (and also surface loss of the nodule by dredging).Radiochemical analysis was also carried out for carefully scraped samples from the top and bottom of the two nodules. The growth rates of the hand-picked nodule based on excess 230Th and 231Pa profiles were 1 to 4 mm/106 y and apparently varied with time. The dredged sample has grown at 2 to 6 mm/ 106 y and the growth has likely been episodic. The radionuclide composition was significantly different between the top and bottom. Evidence was found that the radionuclide fluxes of 230Th and 231Pa into the nodules considerably changed during the growing histories. The 230Th/232Th activity ratios in the nodule tops are comparable with those in bottom seawater suggesting that the top is growing with metals of seawater origin. However it remains unresolved whether the nodule bottoms are growing by utilizing metals in the sediment pore water.  相似文献
