Limiting accessibility to a fishing area can reduce fishing effort effectively and may therefore promote local recovery of depleted stocks. In January 2002, beach driving was banned in South Africa, thereby reducing angler access to large areas of the coastline, particularly in less-developed areas. In November 2001 a project had been established in the St Lucia Marine Reserve, on the east coast of South Africa, to compare surf-zone fish populations inside a no-take sanctuary zone with those in an adjacent exploited area. Subsequent to the ban, the aim of the project was adapted such that surf-zone fish populations were monitored for potential recovery in what had been the exploited area, located to the north of Cape Vidal, which anglers could no longer access easily, because of the prohibition on beach driving. Standardised research fishing was conducted at two sites in the previously exploited area and two sites in the no-take sanctuary. Conventional stock-status indicators showed evidence of recovery in the four most common species caught in the previously exploited area, in terms of both abundance and biomass. Generalised additive mixed models were used to account for the influence of targeting specific species; however, subtle differences in habitat between the sampling sites, improved angling skill over time, variability in recruitment, and differential species-specific responses complicated interpretation of results. The implications of the findings are discussed in terms of the future monitoring and management of marine protected areas both within the St Lucia Marine Reserve and farther afield.  相似文献

This study made use of data from three long-term fish tagging projects along the South African coastline to investigate the movement behaviour of the endemic black musselcracker Cymatoceps nasutus (Sparidae). From 1984 to 2016, a total of 3 430 C. nasutus (178–980 mm fork length) were tagged (with small plastic dart tags) throughout the species’ distributional range, with an overall reported recapture rate of 7.2%. Recaptured individuals displayed high levels of residency, moving an average of 14.8 km, with time-at-liberty ranging from 0 to 6 809 days. The majority of recaptures (84.6%) were made within 1 km of the tagging sites; however, some large-scale movements, of up to 528 km, were recorded. Although C. nasutus individuals moving greater distances were characterised by greater mean sizes (mm fork length) at time of recapture, the distances moved by juveniles were not significantly different from those of adults (p > 0.05). Low levels of connectivity among coastal regions were therefore expected due to the high degree of residency displayed by this species. Combining traditional management approaches together with a well-designed network of no-take marine protected areas is likely to be the most effective way to protect this vulnerable species. A lack of data on the movements of adults remains a challenge, but this could be overcome by tracking large individuals tagged with long-life acoustic transmitters.  相似文献

Cyclotron damping by warm electrons limits the amplitude of high frequency electrostatic waves propagating in discrete auroral arcs. The effect of this damping on whistler VLF hissupper hybrid noise and Bernstein modes is examined by calculating temporal growth rates and power flux intensities of amplified noise produced by precipitating electrons. The auroral electrons are described by a realistic distribution function. The effect of varying ionospheric conditions is also considered. Whistler mode noise is found to be less sensitive to the warm electron model than the upper hybrid mode. Bernstein modes are rapidly absorbed by the ionospheric and warm electrons. The difference in the peak power flux of the whistler and upper hybrid modes is indicative of the local value of the ratio of electron plasma frequency to electron gyrofrequency. For peak upper hybrid noise to exceed peak whistler noisethis ratio should be greater than 1. Ionospheric electron temperature has little effect on the spectrum, and intense narrow beams in the distribution function should be most effective at producing high noise levels for a given warm electron model.  相似文献

松辽盆地徐家围子营城组发育一套以流纹岩为主的中酸性火山岩。岩石薄片观察和主量、微量元素研究发现,后期热液蚀变、区域埋深及低温水合作用对流纹岩的Si、K、Rb等元素含量产生一定影响; 流纹岩明显富集Rb、Th、U、Pb等强不相容元素,Ba、Sr、Ti、Eu、P 负异常,暗示其经历了斜长石、磷灰石和钛铁矿分离结晶作用。流纹岩的(87Sr/86Sr)i(0.705265 ~ 0.711895)值变化范围较大,大多数εNd(t)为正值(1.83 ~ 3.38),Pb同位素比值相对集中,(206Pb/204Pb)i=18.09~18.32,(207Pb/204Pb)i=15.50 ~ 15.54,(208Pb/204Pb)i=37.80 ~ 38.10。研究表明,岩石的源区为大比例年轻成分与少量古老地壳的混合部分熔融,其演化过程中经历了不同程度的地壳混染。松辽盆地早白垩世火山岩为板内伸展环境喷发的产物,可能与太平洋板块俯冲导致的中国东部岩石圈减薄、软流圈上涌密切相关。  相似文献
