Fluoride ion interaction with synthetically prepared goethite has been investigated over a range of pH values (4–9) and F concentrations (10–3–10–5 M). The amount of F retained by goethite suspensions was found to be a function of pH, media ionic strength, F concentration, and goethite concentration. The lowest ionic strength (0.001 M KNO3) gave the highest adsorption medium. Uptake was minimal at pH >7 and increased with decreasing pH. Thermodynamic properties for fluoride adsorption at 298 K and 323 K were investigated. The isosteric heat of adsorption (H r) was calculated and the heterogeneity and homogeneity of the surface examined for goethite. In view of the importance of fluoride in dental health, the interaction of fluoride on goethite in the physical environment has important implications on dental epidemiology.  相似文献

Monsoon driven water mass exchange between the Bay of Bengal(Bo B) and Arabian Sea(AS) is the common experience. However, it is not yet firmly confirmed that the exchange pathway is either passing through southern tip of Sri Lanka or Palk Strait. Local circulation patterns impact the pathways followed by the East Indian Coastal Currents(EICC) that drive exchange, thereby modulating mixing and water mass transformation in the Bay of Bengal around Sri Lanka. In this study, observations from surface drifters were incorporated with the satellite derived data to understand the monsoonal impact on circulation patterns in the Indian Ocean. This was the first multi-national scientific effort which was conducted in the Bo B and AS during 2013 to 2015 to understand the monsoonal impact on circulation patterns in the complex region. The results indicated that seasonally reversing monsoonal currents of southern Sri Lanka, traced by the wintertime freshwater export pathways of the EICC. The deflection of monsoon currents running along the east coast of Sri Lanka by forming cyclonic and anti-cyclonic eddies, which influence the mixing and stirring associated with these flows. Results further indicate the low salinity cold water flows from the Bo B to AS along the western boundary of the Bo B during northeast monsoon. In the same way, reverses the phenomena during southwest monsoon, transporting high salinity warm water from AS to the Bo B. This maintain the bay status which occurred due to freshwater influx from large rivers and high saline water from AS. However, no evidences were observed for the exchange through Palk Strait during the study. Also, there are some mis-matches in in-situ and remotely sensed measurements which imply the necessity of systematic observation system for the complex region as an alternative approach.  相似文献

Marine bioluminescence is a unique phenomenon and widely studied around the world. However, information on bioluminescence is scarce in the Indian ocean. This study was carried out to understand the spatial and temporal variations in planktonic bioluminescence off the south coast and the Puttalm Lagoon of Sri Lanka. Planktonic bioluminescence intensity, zooplankton samples, water samples and oceanographic data were collected from sampling sites from January to December 2016 in three month intervals. Time series data were collected at a fixed sampling station, off the south coast of Sri Lanka, in order to understand the variation of bioluminescence intensity throughout the night and with respect to monsoon winds. Bioluminescence intensity was measured using the recoverable bathyphotometer and zooplankton samples were collected using WP-2 net with a 180 μm mesh size plankton net. The results revealed that most of the bioluminescence intensity peaks in the ocean were concentrated in the mixed layer depth zone. Bioluminescence and Chlorophyll profiles indicate the presence of both heterotrophic and autotrophic planktonic bioluminescence. Fixed station analysis showed variations in planktonic bioluminescence throughout the night and with respect to monsoon winds. Twenty two surface bioluminescent zooplankton species belonging to 15 families and 4 phyla were identified during this study. Variations in planktonic bioluminescence with respect to time and sampling locations were evident. The current study yielded encouraging results that should lead to further identification of planktonic distribution near Sri Lanka and key bioluminescent zooplankton in the region.
