Montane (alpine) areas are generally of high value for nature conservation. Such environments and the habitats they support are dynamic and often fragile. They are vulnerable to disturbance from a range of human activities and are responsive to climate changes over short and long timescales. Biodiversity and conservation values are closely linked to geological history, geomorphological processes and soils, and it is crucial that management systems are based on understanding these links.
There are many similarities between the Cairngorm Mountains (Scotland), the Giant Mountains (Czech Republic) and Abisko Mountains (Sweden) in terms of geology, geomorphology, ecology, links with biodiversity and high conservation importance. Comparable pressures and management issues involve, to varying degrees, a history of human use and impacts from deforestation, pasturing, grazing, recreation and atmospheric pollution. Landscape change therefore involves a complex interplay between natural and anthropogenic factors. Managing such change requires better understanding of the geo–ecological processes involved and the factors that determine landscape sensitivity. This is illustrated through a simple framework and examples from the three areas. Comparison of landscape sensitivity between similar montane areas, but in different geographic locations and climatic environments, should allow more informed management planning and a precautionary approach in advance of further changes in human activity and from predicted global warming scenarios.  相似文献

Sediment transport processes in the Kärkevagge are investigated concerning their spatial and temporal characteristics due to long–term monitoring. Within this study remote sensing techniques and GIS modelling in connection with geomorphic mapping are applied for identification and characterization of geomorphic process units. Relationships between geomorphometric parameters and slope processes like solifluction, talus creep and rockfall have been analysed. Multitemporal Landsat–TM5 scenes are used as source for landcover characteristics (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) after preprocessing involving orthorectification and topographic normalization in order to remove possible terrain–induced effects. Additionally, a digital elevation model with a resolution of 20 m for the Kärkevagge catchment is developed and parameters like slope gradient, slope aspect and profile curvature are extracted as input for the analysis of the sediment transport system. The combination of landcover information, geomorphometrical and topological features allows the definition of areas for single process activities. They show specific sediment displacement characteristics depending on material conditions, topological and geometrical features. Geomorphic process units, which show a homogenous composition, are extracted from these available layers.  相似文献

Solubility product determinations suggest that the hydrous phosphates of the rare earths, REPO4 · xH2O, are important in controlling the sea water REE concentrations. Two of these solids, rhabdophane, (P6222) and “hydrous xenotime”, (141/amd), have been synthesized at 100°C via the acid hydrolysis of the respective REE pyrophosphate. The solubility products at infinite dilution were determined to be pK0 = 24.5, (La at 25°C); 26.0, (Pr at 100°C); 25.7, (Nd at 100°C): and 25.5, (Er at 100°C). On the basis of calculations involving the reaction of RE3+ with apatite to form the hydrous phosphate, the lanthanum concentration in sea water is predicted to be about 140 pmol/L. Laboratory experiments support the hypothesis that apatite is a substrate for reactions with dissolved REE.  相似文献

Arctic ecosystems could provide a substantial positive feedback to global climate change if warming stimulates below-ground CO2 release by enhancing decomposition of bulk soil organic matter reserves.Ecosystem respiration during winter is important in this context because CO2 release from snow-covered tundra soils is a substantial component of annual net carbon (C) balance, and because global climate models predict that the most rapid rises in regional air temperature will occur in the Arctic during winter. In this manipulative field study, the relative contributions of plant and bulk soil organic matter C pools to ecosystem CO2 production in mid-winter were investigated. We measured CO2 efflux rates in Swedish sub-arctic heath tundra from control plots and from plots that had been clipped in the previous growing season to disrupt plant activity. Respiration derived from recently-fixed plant C (i.e., plant respiration, and respiration associated with rhizosphere exudates and decomposition of fresh litter) was the principal source of CO2 efflux, while respiration associated with decomposition of bulk soil organic matter was low, and appeared relatively insensitive to temperature. These results suggest that warmer mid-winter temperatures in the Arctic may have a much greater impact on the cycling of recently-fixed, plant-associated C pools than on the depletion of tundra bulk soil C reserves, and consequently that there is a low potential for significant initial feedbacks from arctic ecosystems to climate change during mid-winter.  相似文献

Published reports show that 222Rn contents of soil gas can increase under snow-covered or frozen soils. By utilizing these observations and results of field tests described here, it can be stated that U prospecting with 222Rn in frozen terrain is practicable.Rn profiles in frozen and snow-covered soils over U mineralization in the Bancroft area of Ontario outlined known radioactive zones more clearly than did scintillometer profiles.Tests in Gatineau Park, Quebec, in the proximity of a radioactive pegmatite dike showed that lake ice acts as a restrictive barrier to Rn movement from lake waters beneath. Water samples, collected and allowed to freeze in plastic bottles, retained dissolved Rn quite effectively thus permitting sample collection and storage under the most severe winter conditions. Rn sampling of through-ice lake waters is therefore a feasible prospecting tool.Samples of spring run-off (snow-melt) waters and slushy snow collected from within a known weakly radioactive zone near South March, Ontario, were shown to contain less Rn than found in the same stream waters in the summer. No pronounced Rn degassing event of frozen soils was apparent early in the spring thaw in percolating run-off waters draining from the zone. The usefulness of spring thaw hydrogeochemistry using Rn is discussed.  相似文献

The Selwyn Basin comprises those rocks of Paleozoic age that were deposited in a fault-controlled epicratonic basin or aulacogen bounded by the Mackenzie Platform on the east and north, and the Cassiar Platform to the west. Boundaries between sedimentary facies within the Selwyn Basin during Ordovician to Middle Silurian time were parallel to and symetrically disposed about the long axis of that basin, consisting of chert in the central and deeper zone and shales in the flanking zones. Conodont dates indicate that the Howard's Pass (XY) Zn-Pb deposit formed during Llandoverian time in a local third-order basin within the shale facies. Various geological features such as abrupt facies changes, local thickening and slumping of sedimentary units suggest that growth faults played an important role in basin development as well as serving as conduits for the discharge of ore-forming fluids.The only sulphides recognized to date at the XY deposit are sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite. Sphalerite and galena can occur as concordant, fine laminations, or remobilized into sedimentary dewatering structures, or transposed and remobilized into a tectonic (slaty) cleavage. Pyrite most commonly forms diagenetic microframboids which postdate the laminated sulphides but predate the sphalerite and galena emplaced in dewatering structures.Within the main ore-bearing unit, i.e. the Active Member, the Pb/(Pb+Zn) ratio decreases stratigraphically upwards and laterally towards the margins of the deposit. This zonation accompanies a change in host-rock composition from cherty limestone at the base to carbonaceous chert towards the top of the Active Member. In addition to Zn and Pb, the other chalcophile elements concentrated in the Active Member are Cd and Hg, both of which are bound isomorphously in sphalerite.Both ore-forming and ore-associated elements are zoned stratigraphically and laterally in the host rocks of the XY deposit. The footwall carbonaceous mudstones are enriched in Ni, Cu, Co, Mo, As, Sb, Zn, Cd, Hg and Pb relative to rocks of similar age and composition located remote from mineralization. Ni, Cu, Co, Mo, As and Sb now reside in diagenetic pyrite but in whole rock chemical analyses show a strong positive correlation with organic C. On the other hand, Zn, Cd, Hg and Pb are bound in sphalerite or galena. By comparison, the overlying phosphatic chert is enriched in Ni and Cu only, both of which correlate positively with organic C.  相似文献

The analysis of Holocene geomorphic process activity demands long–term data sets, which are available for the Kärkevagge catchment due to 50 years of intensive geomorphologic field studies. This data set is used in combination with additional field measurements, remote sensing and digital elevation model (DEM) analysis to provide input data for modelling Holocene valley development. On the basis of this information, geomorphic process units (GPUs) are defined by means of GIS modelling. These units represent areas of homogeneous process composition that transfer sediments. Since the data base enables the quantification of single processes, the interaction of processes within the units can also be quantified. Applying this concept permits calculation of recent sediment transfer rates and hence leads to a better understanding of actual geomorphic landscape development activity. To extrapolate these data in time and space the process–related sediments in the valley are analysed for depth and total volume, primarily using geophysical methods. In this fashion the validity of measured process rates is evaluated for the Holocene time scale. Results from this analysis are exemplified in a cross–profile showing some of the principal sediment units in the valley. For example, the measured modern rates on a slush torrent debris fan seem to represent the Holocene mean rate. This approach should also be suitable for revealing Holocene geomorphic landscape development in terms of climate change.  相似文献

DSRI has initiated a development program of CZT X-ray and gamma raydetectors employing strip readout techniques. A dramatic improvement ofthe energy response was found operating the detectors as so-called driftdetectors. For the electronic readout, modern ASIC chips wereinvestigated. Modular design and the low power electronics will make largearea detectors using the drift strip method feasible. The performance of aprototype CZT system will be presented and discussed. One such detector system has been proposed for future space missions: TheX-Ray Imager (XRI) on the Atmospheric X-ray Observatory (AXO), whichis a mission proposed to the Danish Small Satellite Program and is dedicatedto observations of X-ray generating processes in the Earth's atmosphere. Ofspecial interest will be simultaneous optical and X-ray observations of spritesthat are flashes appearing directly above an active thunderstorm system.Additional objective is a detailed mapping of the auroral X-ray and opticalemission. XRI comprises a coded mask and a 20 cm × 40 cm CZTdetector array covering an energy range from 5 to 200 keV.  相似文献
