The poeciliid fish, Phalloceros caudimaculatus (commonly referred to as the “caudo"), is recorded from the wild for the first time, occurring in stock‐water troughs on a farm near Kamo in Northland, New Zealand. The populations in the stock troughs reputedly came from a nearby stream c. 10 years ago, although a preliminary search has failed to reveal them to be there now. Presence of an additional exotic fish in New Zealand fresh waters is a matter for concern, and requires management. To facilitate recognition off. caudimaculatus, and its distinction from other poeciliids present here, a diagnosis is provided to enable identification, together with notes on natural history, and a key for the identification of the five species of Poeciliidae now known from natural waters in New Zealand.  相似文献

The author describes the photogrammetric equipment in use by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (England), the methods used and the work that is being done in architectural recording. The difficulties and the possibilities of future architectural work in the United Kingdom are discussed and the achievements of some other countries in this field are reviewed.  相似文献

Known characteristics of the largemouth black bass, Micropterus salmoides (Lacépède), in its natural habitats in North America and as an introduction in other areas are discussed in relation to the suggestion that the fish should be introduced into New Zealand. It is concluded that much more research on the New Zealand ecosystems is necessary before a realistic assessment can be made of the likely effects of the predatory bass on indigenous fish and on trout fisheries.  相似文献

If predicted global climatic changes occur, New Zealand (an elongate archipelago in the temperate SW Pacific), is likely to experience changes in temperature along the north-south axis, but changes in rainfall across this axis, with more rain in the west and less in the east. Such climate changes will cause a cascading series of changes to aquatic ecosystems, that will also relate to soil processes, vegetation, sea levels, and human uses of water. All of these will affect the fish fauna. Though the likely changes will not differ fundamentally from climate changes in New Zealand's geological past, they are likely to be much more rapid, and for that reason different. Nevertheless, they are unlikely to be perceptible by the human population, and to be less extreme than changes already wrought by the human habitation of New Zealand such as deforestation, river impoundment, and eutrophication.  相似文献

Fish larvae were collected in stream benthic invertebrate drift nets from the Otira River, near Arthur's Pass, New Zealand during a study of benthic drift. They are identified as probably those of koaro (Galaxias brevipinnis Gunther) on the basis of estimates of myomere counts (indicating Galaxiidae or Retropinnidae); by a process of elimination of likely species on the basis of distance up stream, elevation, and habitat characteristics; and by determining fish species in the Otira River tributaries upstream of the sampling location. This comprises the first likely record of emigrating larvae of koaro, a species known to be diadromous by the return migrations from the sea of whitebait juveniles during spring. A newly hatched larva of koaro is described and figured.  相似文献

A recent taxonomy of Retropinna (Woods 1968: N.Z. Jl mar. Freshwat. Res. 2: 398–425) is based on the conclusion that variation in four taxonomic characters is related largely to environmental factors. Thus Woods treated all existing New Zealand species in the Retropinna retropinna complex as synonyms of R. retropinna (Richardson). Analysis of Woods’ data casts some doubt on the validity of this argument.  相似文献
