An interaction of dissolved natural organic matter (DNOM) with copper ions in the water column of the stratified Krka River estuary (Croatia) was studied. The experimental methodology was based on the differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetric (DPASV) determination of labile copper species by titrating the sample using increments of copper additions uniformly distributed on the logarithmic scale. A classical at-equilibrium approach (determination of copper complexing capacity, CuCC) and a kinetic approach (tracing of equilibrium reconstitution) of copper complexation were considered and compared. A model of discrete distribution of organic ligands forming inert copper complexes was applied. For both approaches, a home-written fitting program was used for the determination of apparent stability constants (Kiequ), total ligands concentration (LiT) and association/dissociation rate constants (ki1,ki- 1).A non-conservative behaviour of dissolved organic matter (DOC) and total copper concentration in a water column was registered. An enhanced biological activity at the freshwater–seawater interface (FSI) triggered an increase of total copper concentration and total ligand concentration in this water layer. The copper complexation in fresh water of Krka River was characterised by one type of binding ligands, while in most of the estuarine and marine samples two classes of ligands were identified. The distribution of apparent stability constants (log K1equ: 11.2–13.0, log K2equ:8.8–10.0) showed increasing trend towards higher salinities, indicating stronger copper complexation by autochthonous seawater organic matter.Copper complexation parameters (ligand concentrations and apparent stability constants) obtained by at-equilibrium model are in very good accordance with those of kinetic model. Calculated association rate constants (k11:6.1–20 × 103 (M s)− 1, k21: 1.3–6.3 × 103 (M s)− 1) indicate that copper complexation by DNOM takes place relatively slowly. The time needed to achieve a new pseudo-equilibrium induced by an increase of copper concentration (which is common for Krka River estuary during summer period due to the nautical traffic), is estimated to be from 2 to 4 h.It is found that in such oligotrophic environment (dissolved organic carbon content under 83 µMC, i.e. 1 mgCL− 1) an increase of the total copper concentration above 12 nM could enhance a free copper concentration exceeding the level considered as potentially toxic for microorganisms (10 pM).  相似文献

This work tested the preferential use of fine (<63 μm) or bulk sediment (<2 mm) in environmental research of marine sediments in the Eastern Adriatic. Fine fraction sediment containing silt and clay (<63 μm), predominating in the studied area, was examined to evaluate past and present anthropogenic inputs and to test our hypothesis that investigation of bulk sediment should be preferred. Following aqua regia digestion, chemical analyses of 58 elements were performed by ICP/OES, ICP-MS and cold vapor AAS, and statistical analysis was performed. The concentrations of the majority of the analyzed elements increased with age of the sediment, except for Ag and Sn, which had higher concentrations in recent sediments. The previous main sources of metal contamination in Rijeka harbor were now abandoned municipal-sewage outflow and oil refinery, and continuing harbor activities and antifouling paint use. All activities except of antifouling paint use have been decreasing significantly. Anomalies of selected elements were determined by the box-plot method. More anomalies were found in the bulk sediment than in the fine fraction. Results of Q-modality clustering and factor analysis in the fine fraction almost correlate with that applied on bulk sediments. Thus, it can be said that the differences between the element distribution in the bulk and fine fraction are not statistically significant. Our conclusion is that analysis of bulk marine sediment gives a better insight into the state of pollution and supports previous recommendations to use bulk sediment as a chosen media for environmental studies.  相似文献

We have examined whether the motion field in the photosphere in the range of optical depths 0.25< 0< 0.6 is dominated by thermal convection or by vibrations. The observed asymmetries of infrared Fraunhofer lines indicate the presence of motions, and the fact that the asymmetry is zero for lines of low excitation and increases with the excitation potential shows that these motions are chiefly convective in this part of the photosphere: upward moving elements appear to be hotter than downward moving ones.Assuming furthermore that the photosphere can be described by a three-column model, with temperature differences as given by Edmonds (1967), we find that in the range of optical depths given above, where T seems to vary between 80 and 160 °K, average convective velocities of 2.3 to 3.2 km/sec should occur. This result is in numerical agreement with (a) a previous one by the present authors (1967) derived from the variation of line asymmetry with depth in lines of one multiplet, (b) a finding by Lambert and Mallia (1968) deduced from absolute wavelength measurements of Fraunhofer lines, and (c) a recent result of Beckers (1968) found from a comparison of two granulation pictures obtained simultaneously with a narrow-band filter centred on the two wings of a faint line.  相似文献

The large spread of karst in Yugoslavia (over one third of the territory) and the importance of its water resources due to the growing pollution of the environment lead to complicated research activities in various scientific fields. A multidisciplinary approach to this research should have the following basic directions: defining sources of pollution; classification of pollutants; defining hydrological, geological, and hydrogeological characteristics of the area studied; study of interaction among pollutants, groundwater, and rocks; and, finally, defining of specific protection measures. The prerequisite for any decision making should already exist in local and regional urban plans. Some basic principles of the listed directions of research are illustrated by examples from practice.  相似文献

The method of Goldberg and Unno for the determination of microturbulent velocities in a stellar atmosphere is only applicable if there are no macroturbulent or convective motions.If such motions occur, as in the solar photosphere, the derived results are false and may lead to misinterpretations such as an increase of the microturbulent velocity with depth or anisotropic microturbulence.  相似文献

An empirical method for determining line source functions, previously applied by us to the cores of infrared lines has now been extended to the whole line profile and was applied to centre-limb observations of sixteen lines of five infrared multiplets, mainly of high excitation potential (Table I). The present investigation was performed in two steps. In the first part of the paper approximate values are derived for the depth dependence of the four functions named in the title of this paper, where L is the ratio between the actual and the LTE population of the lower level of the transitions involved. In the second part of the paper we use these empirically derived functions to compute the line profiles. From the remaining differences between observed and computed profiles, corrections are derived to the four functions. The main results are: (a) Convective velocities: see Table IV.(b)(Micro-)turbulent velocities: see Figure 8. Between 5 = 10-4 and 10-1: 1.4 km s-1, which is an upper limit since an unknown contribution of macroscopic motions could not be separated, (c) Line source functions: see Figures 9, 15 and 16. The source functions are close to the black-body function for 5 10-3, slight deviations occur in higher levels. The interesting behaviour of the Caii source function near 5 = 10-5 should be noted. (d) Non LTE-functions: first approximations for the functions log L ( 5) were derived empirically in the first part, and are shown in Figure 10; the second approximation shows them to be too large and the real values seem to be closer to one-half or one-third of these functions.  相似文献

A fraunhofer line profile depends on various parameters, partly related to the photospheric structure (T, P g, P e, v conv, v turb), partly to the atom or ion involved (such as oscillator strength, energy levels), partly also resulting from the interaction of the relevant kind of particles with the photosphere, and the photospheric radiation field. In this paper we shall mainly pay attention to the determination of: the macroturbulent (convective) velocities, v conv (); the damping constant (); the abundance, A el; the distribution function (v conv, ) of the convective velocities at each depth ; the source function, S (); the microturbulent velocities, v turb ().The particular difficulty with these unknowns is that they are, as a rule, coupled in the resulting line profiles, that is: the shapes and intensities in these profiles are determined by the combined influence of these unknowns (together with the other above-given parameters).In this paper we describe a method to determine these six unknowns empirically by separating them, in analysing accurate high-resolution observations of line profiles of a multiplet. The unknown functions and quantities are consecutively determined in the above given succession. For each determination another, appropriate part of the line profile is used. In some cases the influence of the mutual coupling of the various parameters cannot be completely eliminated, and an iterative method has to be used.The method is summarized in Table II and section 2, and is further explained in sections 3 to 8. Accurate determination of the tufa growth rate (TGR) is required to answer the fundamental geomorphological question of tufa evolution. The TGR has been measured by various direct and indirect methods. One of the most popular direct methods uses modified micro-erosion meter (MEM), which has several drawbacks. Here, we present for the first time a coordinate measuring macro-photogrammetry device (CMD) for monitoring the TGR in a contactless manner. The CMD was applied on 28 limestone plates at 14 locations within the Skradinski buk area, Croatia, and measurements were performed in the laboratory. The TGR was derived from digital tufa high-resolution models (DTHRMs). The accuracy of the device was evaluated using state-of-the-art three-dimensional (3D) scanners and error calculation at checkpoints. Moreover, the precision was evaluated with the split test (n = 5). A total of 74 DTHRMs with a spatial resolution of 0.0236 mm were created. The TGR ranged from 0.327 to 19.302 mm a−1, with an average of 5.771 mm a−1. A higher TGR was observed on the limestone plates near mosses, located in fast and turbulent water rather than in stagnant water. We found that specific micro-environmental factors (e.g. proximity to moss) positively affected tufa growth. Erosion events were observed, as well as the presence of aquatic insect larvae (Simuliidae and Chironomidae), which positively affected tufa growth. The CMD is a precise and accurate device that does not suffer from the drawbacks of the MEM method and has many other advantages. It has a high capability of tufa erosion detection, enables the identification of macroinvertebrates, and multispectral or hyperspectral cameras can be mounted on the device for spectral reflectance analysis of the tufa surface. The CMD can be applied in any study requiring a sub-millimetre data quality and involving the comparison of consecutive 3D models and derivation of various parameters of smaller objects. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
