Fisheries managers are increasingly promoting catch-and-release (C&R) to manage recreationally angled fish stocks. Despite this, there is a scarcity of information on the effects of C&R on estuarine-dependent species. Cape stumpnose Rhabdosargus holubi dominates the recreational fisheries catch and provides an important source of food for subsistence fishers in some temperate South African estuaries. The health and survival of R. holubi exposed to a C&R event was investigated by examining their physiological stress response (blood glucose and lactate), reflex impairment (reflex action mortality predictors [RAMP]) and short-term (12-hour) survival. Fish were captured and exposed to one of three air-exposure treatments: 0 s, 30 s or 90 s. Stress and health were measured either immediately (immediate) or one hour after (delayed) the C&R event. There was no significant difference in blood glucose between air-exposure treatments, but there was a significant difference between the mean immediate and delayed glucose levels within each treatment (F(2,143) = 81.8, p < 0.01). In contrast, blood lactate level was significantly higher in the 90-s treatment (p < 0.05). Immediate blood lactate levels were significantly lower than the delayed samples for each treatment (F = 4.29, p = 0.02; n = 169). Although all fish exhibited at least one reflex impairment, the RAMP score was significantly higher in the 90-s air-exposure treatment (H(2,86) = 9.73, p = 0.007). Also, RAMP scores were significantly lower in the delayed samples (p < 0.01). Although short-term mortality was relatively low (2.3%) for this species, it was highest in the 90-s treatment (7%). These results suggest that physiological stress is higher when R. holubi are exposed to longer periods of air exposure and that the physiological stress of fish subject to a C&R event is best measured after a delay. 相似文献

Whistler data recorded during a 14 h period on 10–11 July 1973 at Siple (L = 4.17) and Sanae (L = 3.98) have been used to compare the apparent plasma convection patterns observed from these Antarctic stations. Two distinct bulges in the plasmasphere are seen at both stations, each bulge corresponding to an apparent outflowed followed by in flow of plasma. These structures do not coincide in U.T. or M.L.T. The first bulge is seen at Siple almost 1 h earlier in M.L.T. than at Sanae and the second bulge almost 3 h earlier. Hydrated minerals on Mars are most commonly found in ancient terrains dating to the first billion years of the planet’s evolution. Here we discuss the identification of a hydrated light-toned rock unit present in one Chasma of the Noctis Labyrinthus region. Stratigraphy and topography show that this alteration layer is part of a thin unit that drapes pre-existing bedrock. CRISM spectral data show that the unit contains hydrated minerals indicative of aqueous alteration. Potential minerals include sulfates such as bassanite (CaSO4·1/2H2O) or possibly hydrated chloride salts. The proximity of a smooth volcanic plain and the similar crater model age (Late Amazonian, <100 Myr) of this plain and the draping deposits suggest that the alteration layer may be formed by the interaction of water with ash layers deposited during this geologically recent volcanic activity. The alteration phases may have formed due to the presence of snow in contact with hot ash, or eventually solid-gas interactions due to the volcanic activity. The relatively young age of the volcanic plain implies that recent alteration processes have occurred on Mars in relation with volcanic activity, but such local processes do not require conditions different than the current climate. 相似文献

AbstractPotentially mineralised Paleozoic basement rocks in the southern Thomson Orogen region of southern Queensland and northern New South Wales are covered by varying thicknesses of Mesozoic to Cenozoic sediments. To assess cover thickness and methods for estimating depth to basement, we collected new airborne electromagnetic (AEM), seismic refraction, seismic reflection and audio-frequency magnetotelluric data and combined these with new depth to magnetic basement models from airborne magnetic line data and ground gravity data along selected transects. The results of these investigations over two borehole sites, GSQ Eulo 1 and GSQ Eulo 2, show that cover thickness can be reliably assessed to within the confidence limits of the various techniques, but that caveats exist regarding the application of each of the disciplines. These techniques are part of a rapid-deployment explorers’ toolbox of geophysical techniques that have been tested at two sites in Australia, the Stavely region of western Victoria, and now the southern Thomson Orogen in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. The results shown here demonstrate that AEM and ground geophysics, and to a lesser extent depth to magnetic source modelling, can produce reliable results when applied to the common exploration problem of determining cover thickness. The results demonstrate that portable seismic systems, designed for geotechnical site investigations, are capable of imaging basement below 300 m of unlithified Eromanga Basin cover as refraction and reflection data. The results of all methods provide much information about the nature of the basement–cover interface and basement at borehole sites in the southern Thomson Orogen, in that the basement is usually weathered, the interface has paleotopography, and it can be recognised by its density, natural gamma, magnetic susceptibility and electrical conductivity contrasts. 相似文献

The Keno Hill mining district in central Yukon was the second largest silver producer in Canada with mines operating from
1913 to 1989 on more than 65 vein silver deposits. The seven and a half decades of mining activities have generated large
volumes of mine waste disposed on the land surface, resulting in elevated metal contents in numerous small drainages. To assess
the extent of metal mobilization, old mine workings and the associated mine waste were examined and the water courses draining
to a major river valley sampled. The results of field observations and an array of water and sediment analyses led to three
major conclusions. 1. Acid mine drainage is not widespread because of galvanic protection of pyrite from oxidative dissolution
and neutralization by carbonates in the country rock. 2. Mechanisms operative to limit aqueous metal transport in small streams
in the district include cryogenic precipitation, coprecipitation and sorption. 3. The near-surface concentration of metals
limits the options of waste disposal in future mining developments due to potential metal-leaching problems.

The hottentot seabream Pachymetopon blochii is a small-sized (maximum 2.67 kg) sparid endemic to southern Africa. It is an important target in South Africa's Western Cape traditional linefishery, particularly in the absence of more valuable pelagic species (such as Thyrsites atun and Seriola lalandi). In 2000, South Africa's linefishery was declared to be in a state of emergency, and commercial fishing effort was consequently reduced by 70%. A subsequent increase in stock biomass and intraspecific competition, coupled with environmental changes, were hypothesised to have thereafter altered the growth rate of hottentot, from 2000 to 2010. This study aimed to revise outdated age–growth models for the hottentot by using modern techniques (sectioned otoliths), and to compare age–growth relationships before and after the declared linefish state of emergency. The maximum age observed was 19 years, with no difference in the growth rate between sexes (p = 0.39–0.43) or time-periods (p = 0.96). Although the growth rate did not change, there is evidence that the age structure of the stock changed between time-periods as a result of changes in fishing pressure between 2000 and 2010. The enhanced recent growth model for hottentot, described as Lt = 418.063 (1 – e?0.104(t – [?4.709])) (pooled sexes; n = 206), indicates a considerably slower growth rate for this species than was proposed previously using whole otoliths and has major implications for effective stock management. 相似文献

Previous orbital mapping of crystalline gray haematite, ferric oxides, and sulfates has shown an association of this mineralogy with light-toned, layered deposits on the floor of Valles Marineris, in chaos terrains in the canyon’s outflow channels, and in Meridiani Planum. The exact nature of the relationship between ferric oxides and sulfates within Valles Marineris is uncertain. The Observatoire pour la Mineralogie, l’Eau, les Glaces et l’Activite (OMEGA) spectrometer initially identified sulfate and ferric oxides in the layered deposits of Valles Marineris. The Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) has also mapped coarse (gray) haematite in or at the base of these deposits. We use Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) spectra and Context Camera (CTX) and High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) imagery from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) to explore the mineralogy and morphology of the large layered deposit in central Capri Chasma, part of the Valles Marineris canyon system that has large, clear exposures of sulfate and haematite. We find kieserite (MgSO4·H2O) and ferric oxide (often crystalline red haematite) in the lower bedrock exposures and a polyhydrated sulfate without ferric oxides in the upper bedrock. This stratigraphy is duplicated in many other basinal chasmata, suggesting a common genesis. We propose the haematite and monohydrated sulfate formed by diagenetic alteration of a sulfate-rich sedimentary deposit, where the upper polyhydrated sulfate-rich, haematite-poor layers either were not buried sufficiently to convert to a monohydrated sulfate or were part of a later depositional phase. Based on the similarities between the Valles Marineris assemblages and the sulfate and haematite-rich deposits of Meridiani Planum, we hypothesize a common evaporite and diagenetic formation process for the Meridiani Planum sediments and the sulfate-bearing basinal Interior Layered Deposits. 相似文献
