The Zapiola Rise (ZR) is a singular sedimentary deposit about 1200 m in height and 1500 km in width located in the Argentine Basin. In situ and satellite observations have revealed the presence of an intense counterclockwise circulation around the feature, with a volume transport comparable to those of the major ocean currents. The existence of a very low-frequency variability of the transport associated with the anticyclonic circulation is documented for the first time. As the Zapiola anticyclonic circulation plays a significant role in the mixing of the strongly contrasted water masses of the South Atlantic, variations in the anticyclonic transport can have a major impact on the mixing, hence a role in global climate variability. The circulation was clearly anticyclonic in the periods 1993–1999 and 2002–2007. In contrast, the 1999–2001 period did not show evidence of an anticyclonic flow in the mean surface velocity field. Moreover, the analysis of the weekly fields during that period of time revealed a cyclonic pattern from time to time. Previous work has shown that the flow can be considered as purely barotropic over the ZR region. A 15-year time-series of the transport was produced using absolute altimeter-derived geostrophic velocities. The estimated transport presents high-frequency variability associated with mesoscale activity superimposed on a low-frequency signal. The amplitude of the estimated transport is in good agreement with the only in situ-derived estimation available (80 Sv, January 1993). The low-frequency signal presents a minimum during the period 1999–2001, further suggesting that at times the Zapiola anticyclonic flow may have significantly decreased in strength or even vanished. Possible causes of the low-frequency variability are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

High resolution numerical simulations extending those of Arnold and Korkina (1983) reveal the existence of at least two windows for kinematic dynamo action in a spatially periodic flow with chaotic streamlines. These occur at moderate magnetic Reynolds number R (8–18) and at high R (27 to 200 or more).  相似文献

The fate and transport of groundwater contaminants depends partially on groundwater velocity, which can vary appreciably in highly stratified aquifers. A high-resolution passive profiler (HRPP) was developed to evaluate groundwater velocity, contaminant concentrations, and microbial community structure at ∼20 cm vertical depth resolution in shallow heterogeneous aquifers. The objective of this study was to use mass transfer of bromide (Br), a conservative tracer released from cells in the HRPP, to estimate interstitial velocity. Laboratory experiments were conducted to empirically relate velocity and the mass transfer coefficient of Br based on the relative loss of Br from HRPP cells. Laboratory-scale HRPPs were deployed in flow boxes containing saturated soils with differing porosities, and the mass transfer coefficient of Br was measured at multiple interstitial velocities (0 to 100 cm/day). A two-dimensional (2D) quasi-steady-state model was used to relate velocity to mass transfer of Br for a range of soil porosities (0.2–0.5). The laboratory data indicate that the mass transfer coefficient of Br, which was directly—but non-linearly—related to velocity, can be determined with a single 3-week deployment of the HRPP. The mass transfer coefficient was relatively unaffected by sampler orientation, length of deployment time, or porosity. The model closely simulated the experimental results. The data suggest that the HRPP will be applicable for estimating groundwater velocity ranging from 1 to 100 cm/day in the field at a minimum depth resolution of 10 cm, depending on sampler design.  相似文献

The properties of a neutral lunar atmosphere are investigated theoretically. A non-uniformity is shown to result from the temperature variations and non-uniform gas source distribution on the surface of the Moon. An integral equation governing the distribution of molecular fluxes, in the steady state, is formulated. This equation is solved by computer and analytical methods. Solutions are obtained and discussed for mass numbers ranging from hydrogen to the heavy gases. Characteristic relaxation times for approach to the steady state are estimated and found generally to be a small fraction of the synodic period. It is concluded that in all cases a marked anisotropy of molecular fluxes can be expected. By measuring these fluxes conclusions can be drawn about the distribution of gas sources, the physical properties of the surface and the composition of the lunar atmosphere.  相似文献

Satellite ocean color and surface salinity data are used to characterize the space–time variability of the Río de la Plata plume. River outflow and satellite wind data are also used to assess their combined effect on the plume spreading over the Southwestern South Atlantic continental shelf. Over the continental shelf satellite-derived surface chlorophyll-a (CSAT) estimated by the OC4v4 SeaWiFS retrieval algorithm is a good indicator of surface salinity. The log (CSAT) distribution over the shelf presents three distinct modes, each associated to: Subantarctic Shelf Water, Subtropical Shelf Water and Plata Plume water. The log (CSAT) 0.4–0.8 range is associated with a sharp surface salinity transition across the offshore edge of the Plata plume from 28.5 to 32.5. Waters of surface salinity <31, derived from mixtures of Plata waters with continental shelf waters, are associated to log (CSAT)>0.5. In austral winter CSAT maxima extend northeastward from the Plata estuary beyond 30°S. In summer the high CSAT waters along the southern Brazil shelf retreat to 32°S and extend south of the estuary to about 37.5°S, only exceeding this latitude during extraordinary events. The seasonal CSAT variations northeast of the estuary are primarily controlled by reversals of the along-shore wind stress and surface currents. Along-shore wind stress and CSAT variations in the inner and mid-shelves are in phase north of the estuary and 180° out of phase south of the estuary. At interannual time scales northernmost Plata plume penetrations in winter (∼1200 km from the estuary) are associated with more intense and persistent northeastward wind stress, which in the period 2000–2003, prevailed over the shelf south of 26°S. In contrast, in winter 1999, 2004 and 2005, characterized by weaker northeastward wind stress, the plume only reached between 650 and 900 km. Intense southwestward plume extensions beyond 38°S are dominated by interannual time scales and appear to be related to the magnitude of the river outflow. The plume response to large river outflow fluctuations observed at interannual time scales is moderate, except offshore from the estuary mouth, where outflow variations lead CSAT variations by about 2 months.  相似文献
