Heavy metals in nearshore sediments of Kalpakkam, southeast coast of India   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Kalpakkam, a tiny fishing hamlet dotting the east coast, halfway between Chennai and Pondicherry has become prominent due to the Madras Atomic Power Station. The present study aims at assessing the spatial and temporal distribution pattern of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Fe) from 12 stations along the inner shelf of Bay of Bengal, India, during pre-monsoon (PRM), monsoon, and post-monsoon (POM) seasons. The order of occurrence of the metals in sediments of Kalpakkam is Cr > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb > Cd (excluding Fe since unit is in %) and exhibits a unique seasonal pattern with the highest values (average) during POM except for Cd which shows highest (average) concentration during PRM. In order to determine the sample association according to their geochemical composition and their granulometric characteristics, a correlation matrix was generated and sediment pollution indices viz., sediment enrichment factor and geoaccumulation index were computed. The results confirm anthropogenic input of Cd to nearshore sediments of Kalpakkam. Sources of Cd can be attributed to dredging activities at Edaiyur, direct dumping and sewage sludge from anthropogenic activities, which reach the study area through the Buckingham Canal opening at the backwaters—Sadras and Edaiyur, and extreme use of antifouling paints by fishing trawlers.  相似文献

Sediments from Kalpakkam, southeast coast of India were geochemically analyzed to document the provenance, tectonic setting, and role of chemical weathering. The sediments are dominated by quartz (Si), and the higher concentration of Si suggests the presence of quartz (±feldspar) dominated terrigenous sands. The study demonstrates that the sediments are derived from the granitic to gneissic or from a sedimentary source. Beach sediments are deposited in a passive continental margin setting and seabed sediments are deposited in active continental margin. In the A–CN–K diagram, most of the samples fall in the lower part, i.e., below the plagioclase feldspar joint which indicates a low degree of alteration. Only S6 falls just above the plagioclase feldspar joint, close to the AK boundary suggesting a slightly advanced weathering of sediment and source. Beach and seabed sediments lie close to CNK and FM region suggesting the presence of ferromagnesian minerals (likely to be pyroxene) except S6 which falls in the inner triangle of the minerals feldspar, garnet, and biotite in A-CNK-FM diagram. Both CIA and CIW values depict the unweathered nature of the sediments under humid to semi-humid climatic conditions.  相似文献

As a part of studies on the production of dissolved and particulate organic matter in the decomposition of various biological materials, observations were also made on the chemosynthetic microbial process of nitrification. During the oxidation of ammonia to nitrate, hydroxylamine was detected and it seemed to be an unstable intermediate compound in the first phase of marine nitrification.  相似文献

A magnetograph is an instrument which makes measurement of solar magnetic field by measuring Zeeman induced polarization in solar spectral lines. In a typical filter based magnetograph there are three main modules namely, polarimeter, narrow-band spectrometer (filter), and imager(CCD camera). For a successful operation of magnetograph it is essential that these modules work in synchronization with each other. Here, we describe the design of instrument control system implemented for the Solar Vector Magnetograph under development at Udaipur Solar Observatory. The control software is written in Visual Basic and exploits the Component Object Model (COM) components for a fast and flexible application development. The user can interact with the instrument modules through a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and can program the sequence of magnetograph operations. The integration of Interactive Data Language (IDL) ActiveX components in the interface provides a powerful tool for online visualization, analysis and processing of images.  相似文献

A Multi-Application Solar Telescope (MAST) is proposed to be installed at the lake site (Lake Fatehsagar) of Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO) in India. The lake site Observatory of USO is located on a small island in the middle of the lake. To determine the optimum size of the MAST (for use with an adaptive optics system), it was decided to quantify the seeing conditions prevailing at the lake site during the different months of the year. For this purpose, we have used short-exposure (3 ms) high-resolution Hα (6563 Å) images (spatial scale of ~0.55 arc sec per pixel) of the Sun taken in burst mode with the 15-cm refractor Spar telescope located at the lake site of USO. Spectral ratio technique as reported by von der Lühe (1984, J. Opt. Soc. Am. A1, 510) has been used to estimate the Fried’s parameter (r 0) at this site, which gives the quantitative measure of astronomical seeing. This study has been carried out daily on an hourly basis during 4:30?–?10:30 UT over the months January?–?June of the years 2005 and 2006 to understand the diurnal and seasonal variations in r 0 at this site. It is noteworthy that the lake was almost dry during the observing period in 2005, while it overflowed during our observations in 2006 because of abundant monsoon rains. The seeing in the presence of water shows improvement in r 0 by about 1.0 cm with respect to the previous year’s dry condition and mean r 0 varies between 4.0 and 4.5 cm as evident from the data obtained between January and June, 2006.  相似文献

Simulating the impacts of climate change on cotton production in India   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
General circulation models (GCMs) project increases in the earth’s surface air temperatures and other climate changes by the mid or late 21st century, and therefore crops such as cotton (Gossypium spp L.) will be grown in a much different environment than today. To understand the implications of climate change on cotton production in India, cotton production to the different scenarios (A2, B2 and A1B) of future climate was simulated using the simulation model Infocrop-cotton. The GCM projections showed a nearly 3.95, 3.20 and 1.85 °C rise in mean temperature of cotton growing regions of India for the A2, B2 and A1B scenarios, respectively. Simulation results using the Infocrop-cotton model indicated that seed cotton yield declined by 477 kg?ha?1 for the A2 scenario and by 268 kg?ha?1 for the B2 scenario; while it was non-significant for the A1B scenario. However, it became non-significant under elevated [CO2] levels across all the scenarios. The yield decline was higher in the northern zone over the southern zone. The impact of climate change on rainfed cotton which covers more than 60 % of the country’s total cotton production area (mostly in the central zone) and is dependent on the monsoons is likely to be minimum, possibly on account of marginal increase in rainfall levels. Results of this assessment suggest that productivity in northern India may marginally decline; while in central and southern India, productivity may either remain the same or increase. At the national level, therefore, cotton production is unlikely to change with climate change. Adaptive measures such as changes in planting time and more responsive cultivars may further boost cotton production in India.  相似文献

The paper examines the relative lethal and sublethal response of five important tropical marine mussels (Perna viridis, Perna perna, Brachidontes striatulus, Brachidontes variabilis and Modiolus philippinarum) to different chlorine concentrations varying from 0.25 to 15 mg l(-1). The mussels were observed to co-exist in the cooling water circuits of a coastal power station that adopted intermittent chlorination as a fouling control technique. The five mussel species showed, in response to chlorination, 100% mortality at significantly different exposure times, indicating significant species-specific variability in chlorine tolerance. For example, at 1 mg l(-1) residual chlorine, B. variabilis and P. viridis took 288 and 816 h, respectively, to achieve 100% mortality. The time taken for 100% mortality decreased with increasing chlorine residual concentration. The effect of mussel size (= mussel age) of P. viridis, P. perna, B. striatulus and M. philippinarum on mortality was significant between 1 and 5 mg l(-1) residual chlorine, with larger mussels showing greater resistance than smaller ones. All mussel species showed progressive reduction in physiological activities when chlorine residuals were increased from 0 to 1 mg l(-1). However, species-specific differences in the relative rate of physiological activities were observed. Accordingly, relative reduction in physiological activities in response to chlorination was the lowest in P. viridis and the highest in B. variabilis. The data clearly indicate significant differences in the lethal and sublethal responses of the five mussel species to chlorination. The results, therefore, suggest that for effective fouling control, chlorine treatment against mussels has to be employed judiciously, depending on the mussel species involved.  相似文献

Green mussels (Perna viridis) collected from nine locations along the South Indian coast were used as bioindicator to assess the organochlorine contamination (HCHs, DDTs, and PCBs) in the coastal environment of South India. Concentrations of ΣHCH and ΣDDT were found to be similar, ranging from 3 to 39 ng g−1 on wet wt basis. On the other hand, PCB levels were apparently lower, varying from <1.0 to 7.1 ng g−1 wet wt. The residue pattern of organochlorines in mussels are principally similar to those in Indian human samples, reported earlier. The coastal marine pollution by HCH in India ranks among the highly contaminated areas in the world.  相似文献
