Numerical simulations of the evolving activity of comet Hale-Bopp are presented, assuming a porous, spherical nucleus, 20 km in radius, made of dust and gas-laden amorphous ice. The main effects included are: crystallization of amorphous ice and release of occluded gas, condensation, sublimation and flow of gases through the pores, changing pore sizes, and flow of dust grains. The model parameters, such as initial pore size and porosity, emissivity, dust grain size, are varied in order to match the observed activity. In all cases, a sharp rise in the activity of the nucleus occurs at a large heliocentric distance pre-perihelion, marked by a few orders of magnitude increase in the CO and the CO2 fluxes and in the rate of dust emission. This is due to the onset of crystallization, advancing down to a few meters below the surface, accompanied by release of the trapped gases. A period of sustained, but variable, activity ensues. The emission of water molecules is found to surpass that of CO at a heliocentric distance of 3 AU. Thereafter the activity is largely determined by the behaviour of the dust. If a dust mantle is allowed to build up, the water production rate does not increase dramatically towards perihelion; if most of the dust is ejected, the surface activity increases rapidly, producing a very bright comet. An observational test--the detection of a hydrogen coma around comets at large heliocentric distances--is proposed for determining whether comets were formed by the agglomeration of unaltered, ice-coated, interstellar grains. Laboratory experiments showed that amorphous water ice traps H2, D2, and Ne below 20 K and does not release them completely until the ice is heated to 150 K. Gas/ice ratios as high as 0.63 are obtainable. Thus, if the ice-coated interstellar grains were not heated above approximately 110 K, prior to their agglomeration into cometary nuclei, the inward propagating heat waves should release from the comets a continuous flux of molecular hydrogen. This flux would exceed that of water molecules at approximately 3 AU preperihelion and approximately 4 AU postperihelion.  相似文献

The Kuiper Belt zone is unique insofar as the major heat sources of objects a few tens of kilometers in size—solar radiation on the one hand and radioactive decay on the other—have comparable power. This leads to unique evolutionary patterns, with heat waves propagating inward from the irradiated surface and outward from the radioactively heated interior. A major radioactive source that is considered in this study is 26Al. The long-term evolution of several models with characteristics typical of Kuiper Belt objects is followed by means of a 1-D numerical code that solves the heat and mass balance equations on a spherically symmetric grid. The free parameters considered are radius (10-500 km), heliocentric distance (30-120 AU), and initial 26Al content (0-5×10−8 by mass). The initial composition assumed is a porous mixture of ices (H2O, CO, and CO2) and dust. Gases released in the interior are allowed to escape to the surface. It is shown that, depending on parameters, the interior may reach quite high temperatures (up to 180 K). The models suggest that Kuiper Belt objects are likely to lose the ices of very volatile species during early evolution; ices of less volatile species are retained in a surface layer, about 1 km thick. The models indicate that the amorphous ice crystallizes in the interior, and hence some objects may also lose part of the volatiles trapped in amorphous ice. Generally, the outer layers are far less affected than the inner part, resulting in a stratified composition and altered porosity distribution. These changes in structure and composition should have significant consequences for the short-period comets, which are believed to be descendants of Kuiper Belt objects.  相似文献

A classical nova model was evolved through a complete cycle, i.e. accretion leading to cutburst, mass loss and again accretion, ending in another outburst, by means of an implicit Lagrangian hydrodynamic code, which included diffusion (concentration, pressure and thermal terms), as well as an extensive nuclear reactions network between 28 isotopes of C, N, O, F, Ne, Na, Mg and Al. The initial model was a 1.25 M C–O white dwarf (WD) and the accretion rate assumed was 10–11 M/yr. For more details of this calculation, see Prialnik (1986).The accreted matter was assumed to have normal composition (X=0.70, Z=0.03). Nevertheless, due to diffusion and convection, a significant amount of core material was mixed into the accreted matter, raising Z by a factor of 10. This work discusses the composition, radioactivity, and possible utilization of the kaolin resources in Sinai which are hosted in thick sandstone sequences belonging to the Carboniferous (Wadi Khaboba) and Early Cretaceous (Wadi Iseila and Abansakar) ages. The characterization of kaolin was done by microscopic and SEM examination, supported by XRD and ICP-MS analyses. The studied kaolin resources consist of kaolinite, as the main constituent, associated with subsidiary dickite and halloysite, and minor contribution of smectite and illite. The most dominant non-clay mineral is quartz, besides minor gypsum, dolomite, and hematite. Ferrugination dominates, in most cases, at the upper boundaries of the kaolin lenses, suggesting possible supergene activity. The high Al2O3/SiO2 ratio for the Cretaceous kaolin (0.54, in average) specifies its better grade relative to the Carboniferous kaolin (0.43, in average). The kaolin of the middle part of lens C in Wadi Iseila contains Si/Al molecular ratio of about unity, suggesting high-grade kaolin. The Carboniferous kaolin has enriched the radionuclides: U, Th, and Ra (at disequilibrium state due to leaching of eU relative to Ra) and the REE, relative to that of the Cretaceous age. The Carboniferous kaolin is characterized by a higher contribution of HREE (zircon signature), whereas LREE seems to be more influential for the Early Cretaceous kaolin (monazite signature). In spite of the very high CIA index (93 to 99), none of the analyzed kaolin deposits displays Ce abnormality. The high radioactivity of some Carboniferous kaolin can be a serious impediment for its utilization or its exportation. The kaolin of Sinai does not satisfy the international standards for paperwork industries and refractory manufacturing, but beneficiation may overcome this challenge. However, some lenses have high-grade kaolin with a low percentage of oxides of iron, magnesium, calcium, sodium, and potassium and a low radioactivity, hence nominated for the local refractory industry. The high-grade kaolin of Sinai fulfills the standards required for ceramics manufacturing in the global market. Grade 3 kaolin (< 30%, Al2O3) can be used in the manufacturing of white Portland cement and red glaze manufacturing on both local and global markets.  相似文献

Durda et al. (Durda, D.D., Bottke, W.F., Enke, B.L., Merline, W.J., Asphaug, E., Richardson, D.C., Leinhardt, Z.M. [2004]. Icarus 170, 243–257), using numerical models, suggested that binary asteroids with large separation, called Escaping Ejecta Binaries (EEBs), can be created by fragments ejected from a disruptive impact event. It is thought that six binary asteroids recently discovered might be EEBs because of the high separation between their components (~100 > a/Rp > ~20).However, the rotation periods of four out of the six objects measured by our group and others and presented here show that these suspected EEBs have fast rotation rates of 2.5–4 h. Because of the small size of the components of these binary asteroids, linked with this fast spinning, we conclude that the rotational-fission mechanism, which is a result of the thermal YORP effect, is the most likely formation scenario. Moreover, scaling the YORP effect for these objects shows that its timescale is shorter than the estimated ages of the three relevant Hirayama families hosting these binary asteroids. Therefore, only the largest (D  19 km) suspected asteroid, (317) Roxane, could be, in fact, the only known EEB.In addition, our results confirm the triple nature of (3749) Balam by measuring mutual events on its lightcurve that match the orbital period of a nearby satellite in addition to its distant companion. Measurements of (1509) Esclangona at different apparitions show a unique shape of the lightcurve that might be explained by color variations.  相似文献

This short technical note describes a simple technique for synthesising an optimised binary glass for performing coarse mass table calibrations of secondary ion mass spectrometers. A Ge-Bi glass doped with five selected trace elements was used to anchor the entire mass table up to m/z ≥ 209 at an accuracy of < 0.5 dalton. Using this material it has been possible to calibrate coarsely the mass table of a Cameca ims 6f instrument in less than five minutes, thereby greatly simplifying the switch from low mass range to high mass range measurements. Although not suitable for the quantification of geological materials, the ease of synthesis and its utility for rapidly performing what is an otherwise time consuming process makes this material a useful tool for SIMS instruments which offer a multiple mass range capability.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to apply an integrated approach to determine nitrate sources and fate in the alluvial aquifer of the River Vibrata (Abruzzi, central Italy) by coupling the Isotope and the Component approaches. Collected data include concentration and nitrogen isotope composition of groundwater samples from the alluvial aquifer and nitrogen loads arising from agricultural and non-agricultural sources. The adopted methodology identified synthetic fertilizers as main sources of nitrate in the Vibrata alluvial aquifer. At the catchment scale, two different zones have been identified: the Upper Valley, where infiltration to groundwater is dominant and nitrogen easily migrates into the aquifer; in this area, nitrate content in groundwater is stable and normally higher than EU requirements. Moreover, streamwaters are fed by groundwater with a nitrate content likely lowered by denitrification processes occurring in the hyporheic zone. In the Lower Valley, runoff processes dominate and the nitrate content in surface waters is higher. Nevertheless, groundwater is locally affected by denitrification that breaks down the nitrate content, which often reaches values consistent with law limits.  相似文献
