X-ray energy spectroscopy has been successfully utilized to provide rapid, multi-elemental, quantitative analyses of the intertidal mussel, Mytilus edulis, found in southern coastal waters of British Columbia (Canada). Since no a priori decision needed to be made on which elements required monitoring, concentrations of the seven dominant elements (Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Se and Pb) were determined in the gills and viscera of these organisms. The potential usefulness of XES for providing relevant data on aquatic bioaccumulators for environmental monitoring studies is discussed.  相似文献

We present and demonstrate a new method for accurately determining the radial component of sea current, using information derived from HF radar returns. The absence of properly identified mechanisms to adequately protect the marine environment remains a major shortcoming in Australia’s commitment to biodiversity conservation. The current commitment to a National Representative System of Marine Protected Areas (NRSMPA) falls far short of providing adequate protection against the suite of existing and potential threats even though areas are designated as being ‘protected’. In this paper it is argued that the actions taken under the NRSMPA are disproportionately concentrated on regulating fishing, including the closing of areas in so-called sanctuary zones to all types of fishing. In the absence of clearly identified threats from most forms of fishing and without assessment of how best to manage those few fishing threats that have been identified, such actions are inefficient and mostly inappropriate. Moreover, they do not provide adequate protection against the full suite of threats to marine environments. Adequate measures for the proper conservation of these areas and/or the protection of marine biodiversity more generally are not being provided and in most cases threats are not even adequately described and evaluated.  相似文献

This paper examines the quantitative measurements of out-of-plane displacement produced by the effect of humidity changes on photographic plates in an attempt to provide a compensation which can be applied in situations involving photographic measurements in unstable ambient conditions. Satellite data were the primary source of information for the eruption of Mt. Cleveland, Alaska on 19 February, and 11 and 19 March 2001. Multiple data sets were used pre-, syn- and post-eruption to mitigate the hazard and determine an eruption chronology. The 19 February eruption was the largest of the three, resulting in a volcanic cloud that formed an arc over 1000 km long, moved to the NE across Alaska and was tracked using satellite data over more than a 50-h period. The volcanic cloud was “concurrently” detected on the GOES, AVHRR and MODIS data at various times and their respective signals compared. All three sensors detected a cloud that had a very similar shape and position but there were differences in their areal extent and internal structural detail. GOES data showed the largest volcanic cloud in terms of area, probably due to its oblique geometry. MODIS bands 31 and 32, which are comparable to GOES and AVHRR thermal infrared wavelengths, were the least effective single channels at detecting the volcanic cloud of those investigated (MODIS bands 28, 29, 31 and 32). MODIS bands 28 and 29 detected the largest volcanic clouds that could easily be distinguished from weather clouds. Of the split-window data, MODIS bands 29 minus band 32 detected the largest cloud, but the band 31 minus band 32 data showed the volcanic cloud with the most internal structural detail. The Puff tracking model accurately tracked the movement, and predicted the extent and shape of this complex cloud even into areas beyond satellite detection. Numerous thermal anomalies were also observed during the eruption on the twice-daily AVHRR data and the high spatial-resolution Landsat data. The high-resolution Radarsat data showed that the AVHRR thermal anomalies were due to lava and debris flow features and a newly formed fan along the west coast of the island. Field observations and images from a hand-held Forward Looking Infrared Radiometer (FLIR) showed that the flow features were ′a′a lava, debris flows and a warm debris fan along the west coast. Real-time satellite data were the primary tool used to monitor the eruption, track changes and to mitigate hazards. High-resolution data, even though coverage is infrequent, were critical in helping to identify volcanic processes and to compile an eruption chronology.  相似文献

We present a number of calculations involving the production and propagation of electromagnetic waves in the Schwarzschild metric. They are based on algorithms developed from the power series solutions of the Schwarzschild radial equation (Regge-Wheeler equation) of Arenstorf, Cohen and Kegeles. These include the scattering of electromagnetic plane waves from a Schwarzschild black hole where we find that previous approximate and numerical work is correct and extend those results to higher frequencies and multipolarities. Exact results for the absorption cross-section are presented. We calculate the power radiated from a radially vibrating neutron star and find that the radiation can be hyperemissive. For example, we find for a surface radius of 1.8 Schwarzschild radii the power radiated is enhanced by as much as factor of 3.7, 4.1, 5.1, for dipole, quadrupole and octupole radiation respectively, making electromagnetic radiation a more effective damping mechanism than in flat space. The Schwarzschild radial functions are extensively treated in the appendices and numerical results are presented for various frequencies and radii. A simple asymptotic expansion for one of the connection constants, appropriate for high frequency, is also given.Supported in part by NSF Grant PHY 77-28356.  相似文献

We calculate the fields surrounding and the power radiated by a slowly rotating neutron star with a frozen-in magnetic dipole field, tilted with respect to the rotation axis, including the effects of spacetime curvature. The general relativistic effects suppress the radiated power relative to flat space by factors up to 1/7 for magnetic dipole radiation and 1/50 for the associated electric quadrupole radiation. This suppression exceeds that which might be expected from a surface red shift alone.Numerical results are found using power series which describe the behavior of electromagnetic fields exterior to a black hole or slowly rotating neutron star. These new solutions, appropriate near the stellar surface, converge for all radii exterior to the neutron star (or black hole) making analytic continuation of the power series unnecessary as well as allowing matching to a linear combination of asymptotic expansions, appropriate for large radius. Typical numerical values for these functions are presented as well as techniques for accelerating the convergence of their respective power series which make them attractive alternatives to numerical integration.Supported in part by NSF Grant PHY 77 28356.  相似文献

Vertical accretion rates were determined for brackish marshes in an estuarine tributary on the Eastern Shore of Chesapeake Bay. These rates determined on the basis of the peak phase of early European settlement as recorded in pollen spectra of the marsh sediments range between 0. 18 to 0.74 cm yr−1 over approximately the last 194 years and generally decrease down the estuary. More recent accretion rates (estimated from changes in pine pollen concentration) appear to have accelerated, exceeding the present local rate of sea level rise. The implications for using estuarine marsh accretion rates as surrogates for changes in sea level are discussed.  相似文献

The introduction of marine protected areas (MPAs) in Australia has resulted in an increase in the number and total area of ‘no-take’ zones. The resulting closures impact all forms of commercial and recreational fishing in and around them despite international recognition indicating that Australian fisheries were already well managed according to ecological sustainable development guidelines. Furthermore, it is recognised within Australia that most MPAs are not designed to provide protection from the full suite of known threats that can affect biodiversity and long-term ecosystem viability. By directing MPA management disproportionately towards comprehensive no-take zones that affect fishing practices that are already required by state and federal legislation to adhere to sustainability requirements, the suite of threats affecting both protected and unprotected areas can be left inadequately and/or inappropriately managed. It is shown in this paper that the modified definition of the Precautionary Principle, which was developed specifically for the MPA process in Australia, is not in keeping with accepted international definitions and guidelines for the use of precaution. It is argued that the development of a definition of precaution to justify a predetermined output (MPAs) devalues the sound use of scientific principles and diminishes the conservation outcome. Furthermore, by distracting efforts from determining and managing the full suite of recognised threats, the value of what protection is provided in Australia's marine protected areas is eroded further.  相似文献

During periods in 1969–1971 when interplanetary flow conditions were quiet, 17 determinations of the solar wind Fe and Si abundances and 7 of the O abundance were made. On the average 〈N(Fe)/N(H)〉 = 5.3 × 10-5, 〈N(Si)/N(H)〉 = 7.6 × 10-5 and 〈N(O)/N(H)〉 = 5.2 × 10-4. Variations from the averages over a total range of factors of ~4 for O, ~4 for Si, and ~ 10 for Fe have have observed. Although Fe and Si abundance variations appear to be correlated, no other element correlation pairs are unambiguously discernible from the present data set.  相似文献
