Hydrothermal experiments with primary detrital components of feldspathic sands (orthoclase, albite, quartz, and calcite) were conducted to simulate possible diagenetic changes in geosynclinal sedimentary accumulations and the geothermal reservoir of the Imperial Valley area, California. Phyllosilicate and zeolite mineralization was produced at 200°C and 1 Kb Ph2o and at 300°C and 1 and 3 Kb Ph2o. Scanning electron microscope examination of the detrital grains shows the development of authigenic minerals and solution features. Phyllosilicate development occurred as dense surface coatings on orthoclase crystals in concentrated brines and as scattered grain clusters in dilute brines. Cation concentration is considered to be a controlling factor in phyllosilicate formation and growth. During formation the phyllosilicate crystals appear to utilize the surficial feldspar lattice structure as a preferred growth site. Electron diffraction studies indicate the crystals are a 1 Md mica similar to illite. Initial phyllosilicate formation occurs principally on orthoclase in systems containing this mineral, but is disseminated on other mineral surfaces in systems without orthoclase. This experimental development of authigenetic illite via the destruction of potassium feldspar may offer a potential mechanism to help explain the resulting mineralogy of diagenetic processes occurring in natural sediments such as in feldspathic sands and argillaceous sediments.  相似文献

Melt Generation by Plumes: A Study of Hawaiian Volcanism   总被引:18,自引:9,他引:9
The mantle plume underlying the Hawaiian Swell has been modellednumerically using a stationary steady axisymmetric plume undera solid conducting lid. A method of calculating the rate ofmelt production from the plume has been developed, and the totalmelt production rate, the residual depth anomaly and the geoidanomaly have been used to constrain the model. The plume hasa central potential temperature of 1558 ?C and the mechanicalboundary layer is 72 km thick. An average of 6?6% melting occursin a melt-producing region which has a vertical extent of 55km and a radial extent of 130 km to produce 0?16 km3/y of melt.A parameterization of melt composition has been developed thatis consistent with laboratory experiments, with models of MORBgeneration, and with primitive Hawaiian tholeiites containing 16% MgO. There is no evidence that the major and minor elementconcentrations in the source region of Hawaiian tholeiites differfrom those in the source region of MORB. The model is consistentwith the REE contents of Kilauean tholeiites if the source regionhas primitive REE contents. The viscosity of the low-viscositylayer is constrained to be 1016m2/s.  相似文献

Melt Generation and Movement beneath Theistareykir, NE Iceland   总被引:2,自引:5,他引:2
A detailed study of the volume and composition of all the lavasfrom the Theistareykir segment of the Northern Volcanic Zoneof Iceland was designed to study basaltic melt generation andmovement beneath a spreading ridge. The trace element compositionsof the lavas are variable, and those of melt inclusions in olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase phenocrysts even more so. We showthat this variability can be produced by mixing instantaneousmelts produced by isentropic decompression of mantle whose initialpotential temperature is 1480°C, and that the calculatedvolume and composition of the average melt is consistent withgeophysical and petrological observations. Pressure and temperatureestimates suggest that the phenocrysts form in the upper mantle,at depths of 30–40 km, and trap melts formed at greaterdepths. Some mixing of the instantaneous melts occurs beforethe melt is trapped, and more mixing occurs before the lavasare erupted. A similar model can account for the compositionof melt inclusions from the FAMOUS area of the Mid-AtlanticRidge, and from the Gorda and Juan de Fuca Ridges. The Generation and Compaction of Partially Molten Rock   总被引:37,自引:22,他引:37
McKENZIE  DAN 《Journal of Petrology》1984,25(3):713-765
The equations governing the movement of the melt and the matrixof a partially molten material are obtained from the conservationof mass, momentum, and energy using expressions from the theoryof mixtures. The equations define a length scale c called thecompaction length, which depends only on the material propertiesof the melt and matrix. A number of simple solutions to theequations show that, if the porosity is initially constant, matrix compaction only occurs within a distance c of an impermeableboundary. Elsewhere the gravitational forces are supported bythe viscous stresses resulting from the movement of melt, andno compaction occurs. The velocity necessary to prevent compactionis known as the minimum fluidization velocity. In all casesthe compaction rate is controlled by the properties of the matrix. These results can only be applied to geological problems ifthe values of the permeability, bulk and shear viscosity ofthe matrix can be estimated. All three depend on the microscopicgeometry of the melt, which is in turn controlled by the dihedralangle. The likely equilibrium network provides some guidancein estimating the order of magnitude of these constants, butis no substitute for good measurements, which are yet to becarried out. Partial melting by release of pressure at constantentropy is then examined as a means of produced melt withinthe earth. The principal results of geological interest are that a meanmantle temperature of 1350?C is capable of producing the oceaniccrustal thickness by partial melting. Local hot jets with temperaturesof 1550?C can produce aseismic ridges with crustal thicknessesof about 20 km on ridge axes, and can generate enough melt toproduce the Hawaiian Ridge. Higher mantle temperatures in theArchaean can produce komatiites if these are the result of modestamounts of melting at depths of greater than 100 km, and notshallow melting of most of the rock. The compaction rate ofthe partially molten rock is likely to be rapid, and melt-saturatedporosities in excess of perhaps 3 per cent are unlikely to persistanywhere over geological times. The movement of melt througha matrix does not transport major and trace elements with themean velocity of the melt, but with a slower velocity whosemagnitude depends on the distribution coefficient. This effectis particularly important when the melt fraction is small, andmay both explain some geochemical observations and provide ameans of investigating the compaction process within the earth.  相似文献

Abstract

Explicit and quantitative models for the spatial prediction of soil and landscape attributes are required for environmental modelling and management. In this study, advances in the spatial representation of hydrological and geomorphological processes using terrain analysis techniques are integrated with the development of a field sampling and soil-landscape model building strategy. Statistical models are developed using relationships between terrain attributes (plan curvature, compound topographic index, upslope mean plan curvature) and soil attributes (A horizon depth, Solum depth, E horizon presence/absence) in an area with uniform geology and geomorphic history. These techniques seem to provide appropriate methodologies for spatial prediction and understanding soil landscape processes.  相似文献

Microbial mediation is the only demonstrated mechanism to precipitate dolomite under Earth surface conditions. A link between microbial activity and dolomite formation in the sabkha of Abu Dhabi has, until now, not been evaluated, even though this environment is cited frequently as the type analogue for many ancient evaporitic sequences. Such an evaluation is the purpose of this study, which is based on a geochemical and petrographic investigation of three sites located on the coastal sabkha of Abu Dhabi, along a transect from the intertidal to the supratidal zone. This investigation revealed a close association between microbial mats and dolomite, suggesting that microbes are involved in the mineralization process. Observations using scanning electron microscopy equipped with a cryotransfer system indicate that authigenic dolomite precipitates within the exopolymeric substances constituting the microbial mats. In current models, microbial dolomite precipitation is linked to an active microbial activity that sustains high pH and alkalinity and decreased sulphate concentrations in pore waters. Such models can be applied to the sabkha environment to explain dolomite formation within microbial mats present at the surface of the intertidal zone. By contrast, these models cannot be applied to the supratidal zone, where abundant dolomite is present within buried mats that no longer show signs of intensive microbial activity. As no abiotic mechanism is known to form dolomite at Earth surface conditions, two different hypotheses can reconcile this result. In a first scenario, all of the dolomite present in the supratidal zone formed in the past, when the mats were active at the surface. In a second scenario, dolomite formation continues within the buried and inactive mats. In order to explain dolomite formation in the absence of active microbial metabolisms, a revised microbial model is proposed in which the mineral‐template properties of exopolymeric substances play a crucial role.  相似文献

High-resolution seismic imaging and piston coring in Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, have revealed surprising deformation structures in flat-lying, unconsolidated sediment at the foot of subaqueous slopes. These deformation structures appear beneath wedges of massflow deposits and resemble fold-and-thrust belts with basal décollement surfaces. The deformation is interpreted as the result of gravity spreading induced by loading of the slope-adjacent lake floor during massflow deposition. This study investigated four earthquake-triggered lateral mass-movement deposits in Lake Lucerne affecting four sections of the lake floor with areas ranging from 0·25 to 6·5 km2 in area. Up to 6 m thick sediment packages draping the subaqueous slopes slid along the acoustic basement. The resulting failure scars typically lie in water depths of >30 m on slopes characterized by downward steepening and inclinations of >10°. From the base-of-slope to several hundred metres out onto the flat plains, the wedges of massflow deposits overlie deeply (10–20 m) deformed basin-plain sediment characterized by soft sediment fold-and-thrust belts with arcuate strikes and pronounced frontal thrusts. The intensity of deformation decreases towards the more external parts of the massflow wedges. Beyond the frontal thrust, the overridden lake floor remains mostly undisturbed. Geometrical relationships between massflow deposits and the deformed basin-plain sediment indicate that deformation occurred mainly during massflow deposition. Gravity spreading induced by the successive collapse of the growing slope-adjacent massflow wedge is proposed as the driving mechanism for the deformation. The geometry of fjord-type lakes with sharp lower slope breaks favours the deposition of thick, basin-marginal massflow wedges, that effectively load and deform the underlying sediment. In the centre of the basins, the two largest massflow deposits described are directly overlain by thick contained (mega-)turbidites, interpreted as combined products of the suspension clouds set up by subaqueous mass movements and related tsunami and seiche waves.  相似文献

The Volume and Composition of Melt Generated by Extension of the Lithosphere   总被引:111,自引:2,他引:111
Calculation of the volume and composition of magma generatedby lithospheric extension requires an accurate mitial geotherm, and knowledge of the variation and composition of the melt fractionas a function of pressure and temperature. The relevant geophysicalobservations are outlined, and geotherms then obtained fromparameterized convective models. Experimental observations whichconstrain the solidus and liquidus at various pressures aredescribed by simple empirical functions. The variation in meltfraction is then parameterized by requiring a variation from0 on the solidus to 1 on the liquidus. The composition of the melts is principally controlled by themelt fraction, though those of FeO, MgO, and SiO2 in additionvary with pressure. Another simple parameterization allows theobserved compositions of major elements in 91 experiments tobe calculated with a mean error of 1.1%, and those of TiO2 andNa2O to 0.3%. These expressions are then used to calculate theexpected compositions of magma produced by adiabatic upwelling. The mean major element composition of the most magnesium-richMORB glasses resemble the mean composition calculated for amantle potential temperature Tp of 1280?C. Adiabatic meltingduring upwelling of mantle of this temperature generates a meltthickness of 7 km. The observed variations of the MgO and TiO2concentrations in a large collection of MORB glass compositionssuggest that extensive low pressure fractional crystallizationoccurs, but that its effect on the concentrations of SiO2, Al2O3,and CaO is small. There is no evidence that normal oceanic crustis produced from magmas containing more than 11% MgO. The mantlepotential temperature within hot rising jets is about 1480?Cand can generate 27 km of magma containing 17% MgO. Extension of the continental lithosphere generates little meltunless ß> 2 and Tp> 1380?C. The melts generatedby larger values of ß or of Tp are alkali basalts, and change to tholeiites as the amount of melting increases.Large quantities of melt can be generated, especially at continentalmargins, where estimates of ß obtained from changesin crustal thickness will in general be too small.  相似文献
