It is argued that the quiscent prominences are a natural consequence of the formation and thermal instability of current sheets in the corona. Thus observation and theory of prominences can give vital information on the presence of currents and the topology of magnetic fields in the corona. Conversely by developing the theory of the structure and evolution of current sheets under coronal conditions we can attempt to gain a comprehensive understanding of the structure, evolution, and mass and energy balance of quiescent prominences. A stability analysis for coronal material permeated by a vertical magnetic field rooted in the photosphere, indicates that a condensation will take the form of a thin vertical wedge of cool matter. The development of a finite condensation is followed and it is shown that photospheric line tying is only important in the initial stages. A perturbation analysis of vertical motions at the neutral sheet shows that thermal instability can lead to overstable oscillations. Cooling of coronal material can lead to both upward and downward mass motions, and gravitational energy release is important to the thermal balance of prominences. Relevant optical and radio observations are discussed. Synoptic observations of the development of active regions and magnetic fields are needed to test the basic hypothesis of the formation of prominences from neutral sheets.  相似文献

We analyse the magnetic support of solar prominences in two-dimensional linear force-free fields. A line current is added to model a helical configuration, well suited to trap dense plasma in its bottom part. The prominence is modeled as a vertical mass-loaded current sheet in equilibrium between gravity and magnetic forces. We use a finite difference numerical technique which incorporates both vertical photospheric and horizontal prominence magnetic field measurements. The solution of this mixed boundary problem generally presents singularities at both the bottom and top of the model prominence. The removal of the singularities is achieved by superposition of solutions. Together with the line current equilibrium, these three conditions determine the amplitude of the magnetic field in the prominence, the flux below the prominence and the current intensity, for a given height of the line current. A numerical check of accuracy in the removal of singularities, is done by using known analytical solutions in the potential limit. We have investigated both bipolar and quadrupolar photospheric regions. In this mixed boundary problem the polarity of the field component orthogonal to the prominence is mainly fixed by the imposed height of the line current. For bipolar regions above (respectively below) a critical height the configuration is inverse (respectively normal). For quadrupolar regions the polarity is reversed if we refer the prominence polarity to the closest photospheric polarities. We introduce the polarity of the component parallel to the prominence axis with reference to a sheared arcade. Increasing the shear with fixed boundary conditions can increase or decrease the mass supported depending on the configuration.  相似文献

Hα observations, using the Multichannel Subtractive Double Pass (MSDP) spectrograph operating on the Meudon Solar Tower, have been made of an active region filament which undergoes a ‘disparition brusque’. The period of observation was from 10 ∶ 45 to 13 ∶ 30 UT on 22 June, 1981. Velocity and intensity fluctuations in Hα were measured. The proper motions of ejecta were followed allowing their trajectories and vector velocities to be determined. To model the dynamics of ejecta several models using thermal or magnetic driving forces are compared. The most promising model explains the motion as the consequence of magnetic stresses acting on an isolated magnetized plasmoïd in a diverging flux tube.  相似文献

Electrostatic double layers have been proposed as an acceleration mechanism in solar flares and other astrophysical objects. They have been extensively studied in the laboratory and by means of computer simulations. The theory of steady-state double layers implies several existence criteria, in particular the Bohm criteria, restricting the conditions under which double layers may form. In the present paper several already published theoretical models of different types of double layers are discussed. It is shown that the existence conditions often imply current-driven instabilities in the ambient plasma, at least for strong double layers, and it is argued that such conditions must be used with care when applied to real plasmas. Laboratory double layers, and by implication those arising in astrophysical plasmas often produce instabilities in the surrounding plasma and are generally time-dependent structures. Naturally occuring double layers should, therefore, be far more common than the restrictions deduced from idealised time-independent models would imply. In particular it is necessary to understand more fully the time-dependent behaviour of double layers. In the present paper the dynamics of weak double layers is discussed. Also a model for a moving strong double layer, where an associated potential minimum plays a significant role, is presented.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 80th birthday, 30 May 1988.  相似文献

Energy storage in chromospheric flux ropes is discussed, in the context of solar flares. The structure is represented by a cylindrically symmetric magnetic field of finite length. The field is assumed to be approximately force-free. The stability of the field to a kink perturbation is investigated. Flux ropes are rooted in dense photospheric material. So the ends of the field lines are taken to be fixed on rigid boundaries for all perturbations. An energy perturbation method is used and the boundary conditions give a stabilizing effect. It is shown that for a moderate degree of twisting the fields are stable to a kink perturbation. Thus energy can be stored in cylindrical fields prior to release in a solar flare. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

The role of electrostatic instabilities in the critical ionization velocity mechanism is investigated. The analysis is based on the theory developed by Sherman, which interprets Alfvén's critical velocity in terms of a circular process. This process involves the acceleration of electrons by a two-stream instability modified by the presence of a magnetic field. A general expression for the energy and momentum of ions and electrons associated with an electrostatic mode is derived in terms of the plasma dielectric constant. This is used in the case of the modified two-stream instability to determine the distribution of energy between ions and electrons. An extrapolation from the linear phase then gives an estimate of the energy delivered to the electrons which is compared to that required to ionize the neutral gas.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 70th birthday, 30 May, 1978.  相似文献

The possible existence of strong magnetic fields in stars is discussed and a method of constructing highly distorted models of magnetic, rotating stars developed. For stars with both poloidal and toroidal fields at the surface a force-free outer boundary condition is necessary. Non-linear solutions of the force-free equations must be used. The force-free equations and the structure equations for a white dwarf are solved simultaneously by a finite difference method. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

On practical representation of magnetic field   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Various manners of determination of a magnetic field are reviewed briefly from the standpoint of practicality and uniqueness. Then a practical representation of magnetic fields in terms of a class of force-free magnetic field is described. The proposed scheme is based on the physical consideration that in the chromosphere and lower corona a quasistatic magnetic field must be nearly force-free and that for the class of force-free magnetic field, i.e., ×B=B with = constant, the magnetic field can be determined uniquely from the observed distribution of the vertical component of a magnetic field. The applicability of the representation is demonstrated by examples and the limitations are discussed. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

The topological associations between H structures and magnetic fields are examined for an active region observed on two different dates. The structures seen in the on and off band of H filtergrams are compared with the contour maps of magnetic fields at the level of magnetogram observations. Similar comparisons are made also with the configurations of force-free magnetic lines of force at various heights evaluated with the use of formulations developed previously by Nakagawa and Raadu (1972).Among the results of significance, we may note that (1) H plages could be identified with regions of magnetic field larger than ±80 G, (2) the network of bright dots seen in H -1 Å filtergrams follow closely ±80 G contours. (3) stable prominences lie along either neutral lines or valleys of magnetic fields, (4) the configuration of magnetic lines of force shows discrete domain structures suggesting bipolar nature of local magnetic fields, and (5) within a domain the configuration is governed apparently by evalutional consequences. Details of analyses are described with discussions on the limitations and possible future improvements. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.Operated by Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献
