From analysis of the relationships between the equilibrium state of condensation nuclei and the relative humidity, a conclusion
is made concerning the preferred use of poorly soluble substances for the generation of artificial condensation nuclei (ACN)
designed for modification of warm clouds and fogs with the purpose of their dissipation and precipitation formation. The advantage
of poorly soluble substances over commonly used soluble salts is that the finely dispersed part of the spectrum of the poorly
soluble ACN does not deliquesce and so is not involved in the formation of cloud droplets. For experimental testing of the
conclusions, preference was given to cement, whose main soluble substance is calcium oxide with a solubility of about 1 g/l.
The spectrum of dispersed cement particles was measured and compared with the spectra of pyrotechnic flares widely used for
modification at present. The process of formation of the cloud droplet spectra was simulated in the aerosol chamber of the
Institute of Experimental Meteorology by decreasing the preliminarily generated excess pressure. It was found in these experiments
that, compared to the spectra of particles formed on background condensation nuclei, the introduction of dispersed cement
leads to the broadening of spectra and to a decrease in the concentration of droplets. Even at the early stage of condensation,
droplets with radii of ∼20 μm appear. In this case, no “overseeding” phenomenon is observed, which, for soluble substances,
manifests itself in an increase in the concentration of cloud droplets with a large ACN concentration. These effects indicate
that, according to the existing concepts about the mechanism of warm-cloud modification with hygroscopic substances, the introduction
of poorly soluble ACN (in particular, dispersed cement) below the base of cumulus clouds should stimulate coagulation processes
and accelerate rain-formation processes. Considerations are given that the introduction of poorly soluble ACN into the already
existing cumulus or stratocumulus clouds or fogs should also result in the acceleration of precipitation-formation processes
or cloud dispersal. Comparison of cement powder with the well-known means of warm-cloud and fog modification is carried out.

The diet of albacore Thunnus alalunga from their spawning ground in the waters of Mauritius was investigated. The stomach contents of 249 albacore individuals, caught by industrial longliners and artisanal fishers, was analysed, and the dominant prey taxa were selected for lipid and fatty acid (FA) analysis. The FA profiles of prey were compared with those of liver tissue of spawning-capable and post-spawning female albacore, using multivariate analysis. Whereas stomach content analysis identified cephalopods and crustaceans as the dominant prey items in number, FA-profile analysis identified crustaceans and fishes as the most-frequently consumed prey of post-spawning female albacore. In contrast, the FA profiles of spawning-capable albacore and those of prey showed very low similarity. Analysis of the prey suggests that although cephalopods, crustaceans and fishes could all provide albacore with the required lipids and FAs, cephalopod prey seem to be less desirable owing to their lower energy content (i.e. low in total lipid, triacylglycerol, 16:0, 18:0 and 18:1ω9). Instead, the most beneficial food appeared to be locally available fishes, which are more energy-rich and have a higher docosahexaenoic acid/ eicosapentaenoic acid ratio. These results provide new information on the trophic ecology of albacore, promote our understanding of the importance of prey type for successful reproduction of albacore, and highlight the advantages of FA profiling to study diet. 相似文献

On the application of the units of measurement of the amount and composition of matter in oceanology
We consider the procedures of conversion of the conventional and out-of-system units of measurement of the amount and composition of matter used in oceanology to the International System of Units (SI). The coefficients of conversion are presented in the form of a table. We present the data on the units of measurement of mineralization (scales of salinity) of seawater for the oceanic range of its variability, freshened waters of internal seas, and brines. The plasma-wave experiment ASPI (analysis of spectra of plasma waves and instabilities) on board the INTERBALL spacecraft is a combined wave diagnostics experiment. It performs measurements of the DC and AC magnetic field vector by flux-gate and searchcoil sensors, the DC and AC electric field vector by Langmuir double probes and the plasma current by Langmuir split probe. Preliminary data analysis shows the low noise levels of the sensors and the compatibility of new data with the results of previous missions. During several months of in-orbit operation a rich collection of data was acquired, examples of which at the magnetopause and plasma sheet are presented in second part of the paper. 相似文献

We present both statistical and case studies of magnetosheath interaction with the high-latitude magnetopause on the basis of Interball-1 and other ISTP spacecraft data. We discuss those data along with recently published results on the topology of cusp-magnetosheath transition and the roles of nonlinear disturbances in mass and energy transfer across the high-latitude magnetopause. For sunward dipole tilts, a cusp throat is magnetically open for direct interaction with the incident flow that results in the creation of a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) over an indented magnetopause and downstream of the cusp. For antisunward tilts, the cusp throat is closed by a smooth magnetopause; demagnetized ‘plasma balls’ (with scale ∼ few RE, an occurrence rate of ∼25% and trapped energetic particles) present a major magnetosheath plasma channel just inside the cusp. The flow interacts with the ‘plasma balls’ via reflected waves, which trigger a chaotization of up to 40% of the upstream kinetic energy. These waves propagate upstream of the TBL and initiate amplification of the existing magnetosheath waves and their cascade-like decays during downstream passage throughout the TBL. The most striking feature of the nonlinear interaction is the appearance of magnetosonic jets, accelerated up to an Alfvenic Mach number of 3. The characteristic impulsive local momentum loss is followed by decelerated Alfvenic flows and modulated by the TBL waves; momentum balance is conserved only on time scales of the Alfvenic flows (1/fA
∼12 min). Wave trains at fA∼1.3 mHz are capable of synchronizing interactions throughout the outer and inner boundary layers. The sonic/Alfvenic flows, bounded by current sheets, control the TBL spectral shape and result in non-Gaussian statistical characteristics of the disturbances, indicating the fluctuation intermittency. We suggest that the multi-scale TBL processes play at least a comparable role to that of macro-reconnection (remote from or in the cusp) in solar wind energy transformation and population of the magnetosphere by the magnetosheath plasma. Secondary micro-reconnection constitutes a necessary chain at the small-scale (∼ion gyroradius) edge of the TBL cascades. The thick TBL transforms the flow energy, including deceleration and heating of the flow in the open throat, ‘plasma ball’ and the region downstream of the cusp. 相似文献

On the basis of the experimental data accumulated in 1998–2005, we analyzed the space and time variations of the carbonate
system of waters and the content of organic carbon in bottom sediments of the Sevastopol Bay. The intensity of gas exchange
through the water-atmosphere interface was quantitatively estimated. It was shown that the partial pressure of carbon dioxide
pCO2 in waters of the bay became much higher for the period of observations. The maximum changes were observed in summer. They
were especially pronounced for the bottom layer of waters. For the entire period of observations, the invasion of carbon dioxide
CO2 was predominant in the major part of the bay, and the content of organic carbon in the bottom sediments increased. The ability
of waters in the bay to absorb CO2 is explained by the synthesis of organic substances, which becomes possible due to the presence of the equivalent load of
nutrients.

The satellite ionosondes in highly elliptical orbits are proposed to be used for the task of continuous monitoring of the Arctic ionosphere. The monitoring scheme with the ionosonde location aboard the Arktika-M satellites is presented. The Baraba and Kulunda steppes are located in southwestern Siberia in an area with an arid continental climate. This paper presents results of the first study of the hypersaline Lake Krasnovishnevoye(Baraba steppe, TDS(total dissolved solids)=297 g/L, pH 7.88). The major chemical, mineralogical and biological features of the lake were studied and compared to those of Lake Malinovoe, a typical saline neutral lake of Kulunda steppe(TDS=396 g/L, pH 7.63). The phytoplankton composition and the culturable diversity of anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria from Lake Krasnovishnevoye correspond to the ones in the Kulunda lakes. Nevertheless, the peculiarities of water composition and regime of Lake Krasnovishnevoye reduce the biodiversity to prokaryotes and unicellular algae. 相似文献

This paper reviews aspects related to applications of seismic wave kinematics for the reconstruction of internal characteristics of an elastic medium. It presents the results of studying the inverse kinematic seismic problem and its linear analogue — problems of integral geometry, obtained in recent decades with an emphasis on the work done by Soviet scientists. Computational techniques of solving these problems are discussed. Unnaturally high hydraulic gradients below dam sites enhance dissolutional widening of fractures in limestone. A model is
presented which suggests that under unfavorable conditions, leakage rates could become unbearably high during the lifetime
of the dam. At the beginning when water is impounded, leakage rates are low and increase slowly. A positive feedback loop,
however, causes a sudden dramatic increase of leakage within a few years. Deep grouting becomes necessary to prevent such
failures. Inefficiencies in grouting may leave some open fractures in the grouting curtain. These fractures widen faster than
pathways below the grouting curtain, and reduce the effect of the grouted region located below. Therefore, open fractures
act in a similar way as reduction of the grouting depth. 相似文献
