This paper explores how the recent history of kauri is remembered and commemorated on the Kauri Coast, western Northland, focusing on three specific heritage sites: The Kauri Museum at Matakohe, Trounson Kauri Park, and Waipoua Forest Sanctuary. Each site was established to preserve elements of the past before they were lost or irrevocably altered. The museum commemorates the pioneers and the kauri timber and gum industries, while Trounson Kauri Park and Waipoua Forest were intended to represent primeval forest and stand as monuments to people who advocated their protection.  相似文献

The ages of prehistoric fires can be approximated by radiocarbon dating of charcoal or associated material, but such dating is often inaccurate and at best imprecise. Pine trunks preserved in British and Irish peats occasionally show firescars, which might be dated through dendrochronology to yield calendar-year dates. However, unlike oak, there is no master pine chronology to provide absolute dates, so dating is dependent on interspecies cross-matching; for sites in the British Isles with no dated oaks, calendar-year dating of prehistoric pines has hitherto proved impossible. We present a first success in dating, accurately and precisely, prehistoric fire events recorded in subfossil bog-pine trunks, using long-distance cross-matching of pine chronologies between White Moss, Cheshire, and the Humberhead Levels, England. Results demonstrate a bog-fire in Cheshire in spring 2800 BC, and again in 2710 BC, between spring and summer. Further successful long-distance cross-matching of pine would permit international climatological comparisons. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Understanding past anthropogenic influences on fluvial systems is an integral part of riverine research. In this paper the spatial history of kauri driving dam placement from the 1870s to the 1930s is studied using oral histories, historic documents and GIS in an attempt to assess the accuracy of historical accounts in reference to dam position in the landscape and assess the relationship of dam position to landscape features and characteristics. GIS results supported historical documentation showing that key factors influencing dam placement were location to kauri, geomorphic impediments to transport, slope and distance to deep water for rafting.  相似文献

We evaluate the feasibility of Bose–Einstein condensate stars (BECS) as models for the interior of neutron stars (NSs). BECS are compact objects composed of bosons, formed through the spin-parallel pairing of neutrons. Here, we utilize the astronomical data from GW170817, XMMU J173203.3-344518 (the lightest NS known), and a novel lower limit on NS core heat capacity to scrutinize the compatibility of BECS with these recent observations of NSs. Our specific focus is to constrain the values of the scattering length a $$ a $$ , parameter determining the strength of particle interactions in the model. Our analysis suggests that if the stars involved in GW170817 were BECSs, the scattering length of their constituent bosons should fall within the 4 $$ 4 $$ to 10 $$ 10 $$ fm range. Additionally, at a scattering length of a 3.1 4 $$ a\sim 3.1-4 $$ fm, stars with mass and radius characteristics akin to XMMU J173203.3-344518 are identified. Moreover, we find that the heat capacity depends on the mass and temperature of BECS, and surpasses the established lower bound for NS cores when a > 2 5 $$ a>2-5 $$ fm. In summary, our results endorse BECS models with a 4 $$ a\sim 4 $$ fm, providing NS observables in agreement with diverse observations and contributing to the understanding of NS interiors.  相似文献
