Centropages typicus was collected at two hour intervals over a diel cycle at a station near the Chesapeake Bay mouth. The species migrated upward at dusk and downward at dawn. Neither light, temperature, salinity, nor density appeared to cue the migration. Attention is drawn to the need for information on the extent and regularity of migration by individual organisms, and how the lack of such information may lead to poor interpretations of migration data.  相似文献

The Maltese islands are composed of two limestone aquifers, the Upper and Lower Coralline Limestone separated by an aquitard, the ‘Blue Clay’. The Lower Coralline Limestone is overlain in part by the poorly permeable Globigerina Limestone. The upper perched aquifers are discontinuous and have very limited saturated thickness and a short water level response time to rainfall. Frequent detections of coliforms suggest a rapid route to groundwater. However, the unsaturated zone has a considerable thickness in places and the primary porosity of the Upper Coralline Limestone is high, so there is likely to be older recharge by slow matrix flow as well as rapid recharge from fractures. Measurement of SF6 from a pumping station in a deep part of one of the perched aquifers indicated a mean saturated zone age of about 15 a. The Main Sea Level aquifers (MSL) on both Malta and Gozo have a large unsaturated thickness as water levels are close to sea level. On Malta, parts of the aquifer are capped by the perched aquifers and more extensively by the Globigerina Limestone. The limited detection of coliform bacteria suggests only some rapid recharge from the surface via fractures or karst features. Transmissivity is low and 3H and CFC/SF6 data indicate that saturated zone travel times are in the range 15–40 a. On Gozo the aquifer is similar but is more-extensively capped by impermeable Blue Clay. CFC data show the saturated zone travel time is from 25 a to possibly more than 60 a. Groundwater age is clearly related to the extent of low-permeability cover. The δ13C signature of groundwater is related to the geochemical processes which occur along the flowpath and is consistent with residence time ages in the sequence; perched aquifers < Malta MSL < Gozo MSL. The 18O and 2H enriched isotopic signature of post 1983 desalinated water can be seen in more-modern groundwater, particularly the urbanized areas of the perched and Malta MSL aquifers. In all aquifers, movement of solutes from the surface travelling slowly through the matrix provide a long-term source of groundwater contaminants such as NO3.  相似文献

Strong ground motions are estimated for the Pacific Northwest assuming that large shallow earthquakes, similar to those experienced in southern Chile, southwestern Japan, and Colombia, may also occur on the Cascadia subduction zone. Fifty-six strong motion recordings for twenty-five subduction earthquakes ofM s7.0 are used to estimate the response spectra that may result from earthquakesM w<81/4. Large variations in observed ground motion levels are noted for a given site distance and earthquake magnitude. When compared with motions that have been observed in the western United States, large subduction zone earthquakes produce relatively large ground motions at surprisingly large distances. An earthquake similar to the 22 May 1960 Chilean earthquake (M w 9.5) is the largest event that is considered to be plausible for the Cascadia subduction zone. This event has a moment which is two orders of magnitude larger than the largest earthquake for which we have strong motion records. The empirical Green's function technique is used to synthesize strong ground motions for such giant earthquakes. Observed teleseismicP-waveforms from giant earthquakes are also modeled using the empirical Green's function technique in order to constrain model parameters. The teleseismic modeling in the period range of 1.0 to 50 sec strongly suggests that fewer Green's functions should be randomly summed than is required to match the long-period moments of giant earthquakes. It appears that a large portion of the moment associated with giant earthquakes occurs at very long periods that are outside the frequency band of interest for strong ground motions. Nevertheless, the occurrence of a giant earthquake in the Pacific Northwest may produce quite strong shaking over a very large region.  相似文献

A late Holocene palaeolimnological record for central Mexico has been obtained from Lake Pátzcuaro, using recent and fossil ostracods. Lake Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, is a closed-basin lake which responds rapidly to changes in the ratio of precipitation/evaporation in the region. The record from a single lake-sediment core, dated by AMS radiocarbon method, covers the last ~3,530 yrs, and is based on ostracod faunal palaeoecology coupled with analysis of the stable-isotope (18O/16O and 13C/12C) composition of ostracod valves. The faunal distribution is determined by the presence or absence of aquatic vegetation and, to a lesser extent, salinity. The 18O/16O and 13C/12C ratios in ostracod calcite show good agreement with palaeolimnological inferences from the faunal assemblages, principally recording changing precipitation/evaporation and primary-productivity levels, respectively. Wetter conditions existed in central Mexico between approximately ~3,600 and ~2,390 yr BP, between ~1,330 to ~1,120 yr BP, and from ~220 yr BP to present, characterised by fluctuating lake levels. A dilution of the sediment load in the lake reduced turbidity levels allowing for a marked increase in productivity. During these phases, the combination of a deeper lake and increased macrophyte cover reduced the degree of mixing of the waterbody. In the earliest of these phases there was sufficient stratification of the waterbody for methanogenesis to occur in the sediment interstices. The wet phases were separated by prolonged dry periods, during which time the climatic conditions were relatively stable. Good agreement was found between the findings of this study and others from the central Mexican/Caribbean region suggesting that abrupt climate changes occurred at least at a regional scale.  相似文献

HD Fractionation factors between epidote minerals and water, and between the AlO(OH) dimorphs boehmite and diaspore and water, have been determined between 150 and 650°C. Small water mineral ratios were used to minimise the effect of incongruent dissolution of epidote minerals. Waters were extracted and analysed directly by puncturing capsules under vacuum. Hydrogen diffusion effects were eliminated by using thick-walled capsules.HD Exchange rates are very fast between epidote and water (and between boehmite and water), complete exchange taking only minutes above 450°C but several months at 250°C. Exchange between zoisite and water (and between diaspore and water) is very much slower, and an interpolation method was necessary to determine fractionation factors at 450 and below.For the temperature range 300–650°C, the HD equilibrium fractionation factor (αe) between epidote and water is independent of temperature and Fe content of the epidote, and is given by 1000 In αepidote-H2Oe = ?35.9 ± 2.5, while below 300°C 1000 In αepidote-H2Oe = 29.2(106T2) ? 138.8, with a ‘cross-over’ estimated to occur at around 185°C. By contrast, zoisite-water fractionations fit the relationship 1000 In αzoisite-H2Oe = ? 15.07 (106T2) ? 27.73.All studied minerals have hydrogen bonding. Fractionations are consistent with the general relationship: the shorter the O-H -- O bridge, the more depleted is the mineral in D.On account of rapid exchange rates, natural epidotes probably acquired their H-isotope compositions at or below 200°C, where fractionations are near or above 0%.; this is in accord with the observation that natural epidotes tend to concentrate D relative to other coexisting hydrous minerals.  相似文献

This paper highlights the important role played by the EISCAT radar for verification in the development of tomographic techniques to produce images of ionospheric electron density. A brief review is given of some of the stages in the application of tomographic reconstruction techniques to the ionosphere. Results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the method in imaging ionospheric structures at high latitudes. In addition, the results include the first tomographic image of the ionosphere for a region extending from mid-latitudes over mainland Scandinavia to high latitudes above Svalbard.  相似文献

A study was made of the adsorption of humic substances (HS) by Mn3O4 and by oxide B, a preparation with the β-MnOOH diffraction pattern but having a manganese oxidation state of 3.4. The interactions follow trends found for other oxides. Thus in 0.01 mol dm?3 NaCl adsorption decreases with increasing pH, while it is enhanced by Ca2+. The HS adsorb more strongly to the oxide with the higher zero point of charge (Mn3O4), while the effect of Ca2+ is greater for oxide B.Microelectrophoretic measurements show that the oxide particles take on the electrokinetic characteristics of the adsorbed HS. However it was found that the magnitude of the mobility depends on the underlying oxide surface and on the source of the HS. The electrokinetic properties of the two oxides dispersed in surface water samples of Esthwaite Water, Cumbria, England, can be accounted for by the adsorbed HS together with coadsorbed Ca2+.  相似文献
