Experiments comparing anhysteretic remanence (ARM) and thermoremanence (TRM) in samples containing natural and synthetic magnetite, whose mean particle sizes range from single domain to multidomain, show that ARM and TRM are very similar (but not identical) in their stabilities with respect to alternating field (AF) demagnetization, temperature cycles in zero field to below magnetite's isotropic temperature near 130°K, and stability with respect to spontaneous decay in zero field. Therefore, for magnetites, ARM can be used to model (with reasonable success) these stability properties of TRM. The field dependence of the acquisition of ARM and TRM shows that the low field susceptibility ratio, χARMTRM, has a particle size dependence, increasing from 0.1 for certain submicron particles to 2.0 for large multidomain crystals. Even for samples whose remanence is predominantly carried by submicron particles χARMTRM is highly variable, 0.11 ≤ χARMTRM ≤ 0.50. Therefore, ARM paleointensity methods which do not take into account the large variability in and the particle size dependence of χARMTRM are subject to order-of-magnitude uncertainties.  相似文献

This issue paper presents how certain policies regarding management of groundwater quality lead to unexpected and undesirable results, despite being backed by seemingly reasonable assumptions. This happened in part because the so-called reasonable decisions were not based on an integrative and quantitative methodology. The policies surveyed here are: (1) implementation of a program for aquifer restoration to pristine conditions followed, after failure, by leaving it to natural attenuation; (2) the "Forget About The Aquifer" (FATA) approach, while ignoring possible damage that contaminated groundwater can inflict on the other environmental systems; (3) groundwater recharge in municipal areas while neglecting the presence of contaminants in the unsaturated zone and conditions exerted by upper impervious surfaces; (4) the Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) practice considering aquifers to be "filters of infinite capacity"; and (5) focusing on well contamination vs. aquifer contamination to conveniently defer grappling with the problem of the aquifer as a whole. Possible reasons for the failure of these seemingly rational policies are: (1) the characteristic times of processes associated with groundwater that are usually orders of magnitude greater than the residence times of decision makers in their managerial position; (2) proliferation of improperly trained "groundwater experts" or policymakers with sectoral agendas alongside legitimate differences of opinion among groundwater scientists; (3) the neglect of the cyclic nature of natural phenomena; and (4) ignoring future long-term costs because of immediate costs.  相似文献

The GAUGE (GrAnd Unification and Gravity Explorer) mission proposes to use a drag-free spacecraft platform onto which a number of experiments are attached. They are designed to address a number of key issues at the interface between gravity and unification with the other forces of nature. The equivalence principle is to be probed with both a high-precision test using classical macroscopic test bodies, and, to lower precision, using microscopic test bodies via cold-atom interferometry. These two equivalence principle tests will explore string-dilaton theories and the effect of space–time fluctuations respectively. The macroscopic test bodies will also be used for intermediate-range inverse-square law and an axion-like spin-coupling search. The microscopic test bodies offer the prospect of extending the range of tests to also include short-range inverse-square law and spin-coupling measurements as well as looking for evidence of quantum decoherence due to space–time fluctuations at the Planck scale.  相似文献

Relative paleointensities are obtained from a 6-m sediment core from Lake St. Croix, Minnesota, spanning the time range from 445 to 1740 years B.P. To normalize the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) for variations in the magnetic content, a laboratory-induced remanence is chosen, whose alternating field (AF) demagnetization curves most closely resemble the NRM demagnetization curves. By plotting the ratio of the NRM to the normalizing remanence versus AF demagnetizing field, HAF, for samples of the same sediment horizon, as well as for samples from different horizons, estimates are obtained for expected uncertainties in the relative paleointensities. For the Lake St. Croix sediments the anhysteretic remanence (ARM) demagnetization curves are very similar to those of the NRM's, and ARM is therefore used as the normalization parameter. Because the sediment exhibits homogeneous remanence properties throughout, and HAF = 100Oe is the optimum “cleaning” field for the entire core, NRM100/ARM100 is evaluated to represent the fluctuations of the relative paleointensity. Our relative paleointensity data exhibit the same general features as obtained from archeomagnetic studies. The intensity increases as one goes back in time with a peak near 800 years B.P., representing an increase in the intensity of up to 60%. Apparent periodicities in the intensity of 300–400 years are observed.  相似文献

Bubble growth in rhyolitic melts: experimental and numerical investigation   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Bubble growth controlled by mass transfer of water from hydrated rhyolitic melts at high pressures and temperatures was studied experimentally and simulated numerically. Rhyolitic melts were hydrated at 150 MPa, 780–850  °C to uniform water content of 5.5–5.3 wt%. The pressure was then dropped and held constant at 15–145 MPa. Upon the drop bubbles nucleated and were allowed to grow for various periods of time before final, rapid quenching of the samples. The size and number density of bubbles in the quenched glasses were recorded. Where number densities were low and run duration short, bubble sizes were in accord with the growth model of Scriven (1959) for solitary bubbles. However, most results did not fit this simple model because of interaction between neighboring bubbles. Hence, the growth model of Proussevitch et al. (1993), which accounts for finite separation between bubbles, was further developed and used to simulate bubble growth. The good agreement between experimental data, numerical simulation, and analytical solutions enables accurate and reliable examination of bubble growth from a limited volume of supersaturated melt. At modest supersaturations bubble growth in hydrated silicic melts (3–6 wt% water, viscosity 104–106 Pa·s) is diffusion controlled. Water diffusion is fast enough to maintain steady-state concentration gradient in the melt. Viscous resistance is important only at the very early stage of growth (t<1 s). Under the above conditions growth is nearly parabolic, R2=2Dtρm(C0–Cf)/ρg until the bubble approaches its final size. In melts with low water content, viscosity is higher and maintains pressure gradients in the melt. Growth may be delayed for longer times, comparable to time scales of melt ascent during eruptions. At high levels of supersaturation, advection of hydrated melt towards the growing bubble becomes significant. Our results indicate that equilibrium degassing is a good approximation for modeling vesiculation in melts with high water concentrations (C0>3 wt%) in the region above the nucleation level. When the melt accelerates and water content decreases, equilibrium can no longer be maintained between bubbles and melt. Supersaturation develops in melt pockets away from bubbles and new bubbles may nucleate. Further acceleration and increase in viscosity cause buildup of internal pressure in the bubbles and may eventually lead to fragmentation of the melt. We quantify the level of polarization of the atmosphere due to Zeeman splitting of oxygen in the Earth’s magnetic field and compare it to the level of polarization expected from the polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation. The analysis focuses on the effect at mid-latitudes and at large angular scales. We find that from stratospheric balloon borne platforms and for observations near 100 GHz the atmospheric linear and circular polarized intensities are about 10−12 and 100 × 10−9 K, respectively, making the atmosphere a negligible source of foreground. From the ground the linear and circular polarized intensities are about 10−9 and 100 × 10−6 K, making the atmosphere a potential source of foreground for the CMB E (B) mode signal if there is even a 1% (0.01%) conversion of circular to linear polarization in the instrument.  相似文献

The electrostatic charging of the LISA test masses due to exposure of the spacecraft to energetic particles in the space environment has implications in the design and operation of the gravitational inertial sensors and can affect the quality of the science data. Robust predictions of charging rates and associated stochastic fluctuations are therefore required for the exposure scenarios expected throughout the mission. We report on detailed charging simulations with the Geant4 toolkit, using comprehensive geometry and physics models, for Galactic cosmic-ray protons and helium nuclei. These predict positive charging rates of 50+e/s (elementary charges per second) for solar minimum conditions, decreasing by half at solar maximum, and current fluctuations of up to 30+e/s/Hz1/2. Charging from sporadic solar events involving energetic protons was also investigated. Using an event-size distribution model, we conclude that their impact on the LISA science data is manageable. Several physical processes hitherto unexplored as potential charging mechanisms have also been assessed. Significantly, the kinetic emission of very low-energy secondary electrons due to bombardment of the inertial sensors by primary cosmic rays and their secondaries can produce charging currents comparable with the Monte Carlo rates.  相似文献
