The favourable agroclimatic conditions for orchards especially apples have increased the acreages in Himachal Pradesh (HP) which has significantly contributed in the growth of state economy. Realizing the importance of horticulture in HP and its changing scenario of the land use/land cover, a study was conducted to identify and map apple and almond plantations in the Kumarsain tehsil of Shimla district using Remote Sensing (RS) techniques. IRS-IB LISS-II False Colour Composite (FCC) diapositives of October 27, March 30 and April 20, 1992 were visually analysed for mapping apple and almond plantations. The results indicate that IRS LISS-II data of April 20 on 1∶50,000 scale was found very useful for identification and mapping of apple and almond plantations in this region. Accuracy of interpretation was also tested on sample basis assuming a binomial distribution for the probability of success/failure of sample points. The overall interpretation accuracy assessed based on 40 sample points was found to be 87 per cent at 90 per cent confidence limits. 相似文献

This paper discusses the situation of sea navigation in south East Asia focusing on the Strait of Malacca. The strait links
the Indian and Pacific oceans, which is considered one of the busiest in several narrow channels around the world. The paper
highlights the significance of the strait to global maritime trade, volume of traffic, and rising environmental and social
consequences in the strait. A feasibility study of constructing a new shipping canal in the South Thai Kra Isthmus as an alternative
option of Malacca route had been studied since 19th century. The paper explores suitable sites for a potential shipping canal
in the Kra Isthmus using physiographic spatial data i.e., elevation, sea charts, geology, soils and river systems. Each spatial
data was considered as a separate decision variable for site evaluation. Separate evaluation criterions were prepared for
each variable based on shipping canal requirements. Overlaying the maps in GIS environment, the variables were carefully evaluated,
and five geographic sites for the canal were derived. The length of the shipping canal over sea and land was computed for
each site. Site B located in south of Ranong and Chumphon provinces, was the shortest one, whereas site C in Surat Thani,
Pangnna and Krabi provinces was the longest. However, each site consisted of benefits and constraints. 相似文献

Tourists are particularly vulnerable to natural disasters such as hurricanes since they might be less informed and prepared than residents of disaster-prone areas. Thus, understanding how the traits of a tropical cyclone as well as specific characteristics of tourists influence affective and cognitive responses to a hurricane warning message is a critical component in disaster planning. Using scenarios that presented tropical cyclones with different relevant characteristics (such as category at landfall), tourists’ knowledge, experience with hurricanes, trip traits, and the location of the survey (coastal or inland), this study contributes to the literature on sociological issues related to natural disasters. The findings suggest that risk perceptions and fear are influenced differently by the traits of the hurricanes and tourists’ knowledge and experience. Risk is strongly influenced by the projected category of the hurricane at landfall, while fear is not as sensitive to this extremely relevant trait of cyclones. The results also suggest that the influence of risk and fear on evacuation likelihood is strong and positive. This study shows the value of studying cognitive and affective responses to uncertain events. 相似文献

The rapid growth of urban space and its environmental challenges require precise mapping techniques to represent complex earth surface features more accurately. In this study, we examined four mapping approaches (unsupervised, supervised, fuzzy supervised and GIS post-processing) using Advanced Land Observing Satellite images to predict urban land use and land cover of Tsukuba city in Japan. Intensive fieldwork was conducted to collect ground truth data. A random stratified sampling method was chosen to generate geographic reference data for each map to assess the accuracy. The accuracies of the maps were measured, producing error matrices and Kappa indices. The GIS post-processing approach proposed in this research improved the mapping results, showing the highest overall accuracy of 89.33% as compared to other approaches. The fuzzy supervised approach yielded a better accuracy (87.67%) than the supervised and unsupervised approaches. The fuzzy supervised approach effectively dealt with the heterogeneous surface features in residential areas. This paper presents the strengths of the mapping approaches and the potentials of the sensor for mapping urban areas, which may help urban planners monitor and interpret complex urban characteristics. 相似文献

Problems concerning the resettlement of those made homeless by the construction of dams to create reservoirs in Thailand are considered. The authors attempt "firstly, to examine the rationale for spontaneous and planned resettlement in Thailand. Secondly, the determinants of the success or failure of resettlers are explored with reference to selected planned resettlement projects. Finally, resettlement alternatives for prospective reservoir evacuees are proposed." 相似文献

River water quality, particularly in lowland catchments, is a matter of concern to the New Zealand public. We assessed river water quality and biological state and trends using data from more than 900 monitoring sites. Parallel state and trend analyses were carried out using all sites and a subset of lowland river sites. Median water-quality state in urban and pastoral land-cover classes was poorer than in exotic forest and natural land-cover classes, and lowland sites in the urban and pastoral classes had the poorest water quality. Nutrient and Escherichia coli concentrations increased and visual clarity and Macroinvertebrate Community Index scores decreased as proportions of catchments in high-intensity agricultural and urban land cover increased. Ten-year trends (2004–2013) indicated recent improvements in ammoniacal nitrogen, dissolved reactive phosphorus and total phosphorus in the pastoral and urban classes, possibly reflecting improved land management. In contrast, trends in nitrate-nitrogen in the exotic forest and cool-dry/pastoral classes indicated worsening conditions. 相似文献

This study evaluates the thematic representation of drinking water quality of 211 habitations along the Dwarka River Basin (DRB), West Bengal, India. The dominant water type is Ca–Mg–HCO3. Statistical analysis of the spatial dataset indicates a clustering pattern (with a nearest-neighbour ratio of 0.368 and Z score of 29.774). Two different techniques, spatial interpolation of water quality index (WQI) and composite water quality index (WQIC) of physico-chemical constituents, were implemented to compare their performance. The WQIC indicates approximately 11.68% of the total study area is at non-permissible levels, whereas the normal WQI technique predicts about 1.64% of the area is in non-permissible zones. Spatial water quality zonation by means of the overlay technique was superior to the conventional WQI technique in precisely distinguishing the characteristics of the permissible area with respect to even a single WHO recommended water quality parameter. 相似文献
