Guillemots Uria spp. account for ca. 70% of the total harvest of prey taken by seabirds breeding in the Barents Sea region. This paper presents guillemot chick diet data collected recently at four localities (Finnmark, Murman, Bjørnøya and Spitsbergen) and collates all the data found by the authors in the literature and in the archives of Tromsø Museum, the Norwegian Polar Institute and Kandalaksha State Nature Reserve. Guillemots consume a wide variety of prey and, in comparison to the harvest by predatory fish and marine mammals, their impact on the Barents Sea ecosystem is considered to be minimal. We point out the need for more systematic collection of data from different regions and at different times of the year before a final impact assessment can be made.  相似文献

Twenty-two samples from two locations at the Foss-Eigeland clay and gravel pit, Jæren, southwestern Norway were analysed for dinoflagellate cysts. Cyst recovery was generally poor and cyst assemblages indicate a cold temperate to arctic glacimarine environment. The percentage composition of a total of 19 cyst species identified allowed the recognition of five assemblage zones. These are thought to reflect fluctuating minor climatic changes during an interstadial period preceding the last glacial advance in the region. Cyst assemblages from these supposedly Middle Weichselian sediments at Foss-Eigeland are similar to those found in the northern North Sea and the Norwegian Sea in probably similarly aged sediments. This suggests a potential for using dinoflagellate cysts to correlate land-based Quaternary sequences with the deep sea record.  相似文献

The distribution of Brünnich's Guillemot in ice covered waters and near the marginal ice zone in the southern part of the Barents Sea was mapped from ship and helicopter in February/March 1987. High densities of Brünnich's Guillemot (up to 1,300 ind./km2) were found in ice leads. The density of birds was especially high over shallow banks where the sea depth was 40-80 m.
A diel movement was also recorded. In the evening the birds left the leads and flew south. Next morning they returned to feed in the open leads. How far they migrated is uncertain, but possibly they flew down to the open sea or to leads close to the marginal ice zone. The migration may have been a means of avoiding to become trapped if leads closed after dark.  相似文献

Aerial strip surveys of polar bears in the Barents Sea were performed by helicopter in winter 1987. The number of bears within 100 m on each side of the helicopter was counted. A total of 263.6 km2 was surveyed and 21 bears were counted. Most of the bears were found in the southern part of the area, which indicates that the southwestern ice edge area in the Barents Sea is a very important winter habitat for polar bears.  相似文献
