Long-term home-range and movement dynamics of spotted grunter Pomadasys commersonnii and the distribution of their dominant prey, the sandprawn Callichirus kraussi, were investigated in the intermittently open East Kleinemonde Estuary, South Africa. In addition, the effects of fish length, diel cycle, season and other abiotic factors on home range and area use were examined. Nine adult spotted grunter (326–489?mm total length) were tagged with acoustic transmitters, and their movements were studied by manual tracking on six consecutive days and nights during each of five tracking sessions from March to November 2004. In addition, movement patterns were recorded by stationary data-logging receivers. Kernel home ranges (95% utilised distribution) varied in size (mean: 76 797?m2?, range: 26 296–165 321?m2), but were all located in the lower one-third of the 3.6 km-long estuary. There was no effect of season, the diel cycle or fish length on the home-range estimates. However, the distribution of prey corresponded with the home-range distribution of tagged fish. Although sandprawn distribution was highly variable within and among transects and depth classes, sandprawns were most abundant in the lower region of the estuary, which corresponded to the home-range distribution of spotted grunter. Extreme midlatitude cyclone characteristics, precipitation, wind speed events, their inter-relationships, and the connection
to large-scale atmospheric patterns are investigated in simulations of a prolonged cold period, known as the Maunder Minimum
from 1640 to 1715 and compared with today. An ensemble of six simulations for the Maunder Minimum as well as a control simulation
for perpetual 1990 conditions are carried out with a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model, i.e., the Climate
Community System Model (CCSM). The comparison of the simulations shows that in a climate state colder than today the occurrence
of cyclones, the extreme events of precipitation and wind speed shift southward in all seasons in the North Atlantic and the
North Pacific. The extremes of cyclone intensity increases significantly in winter in almost all regions, which is related
to a stronger meridional temperature gradient and an increase in lower tropospheric baroclinicity. Extremes of cyclone intensity
in subregions of the North Atlantic are related to extremes in precipitation and in wind speed during winter. Moreover, extremes
of cyclone intensity are also connected to distinct large-scale atmospheric patterns for the different subregions, but these
relationships vanish during summer. Analyzing the mean 1,000 hPa geopotential height change of the Maunder Minimum simulations
compared with the control simulation, we find a similar pattern as the correlation pattern with the cyclone intensity index
of the southern Europe cyclones. This illustrates that changes in the atmospheric high-frequency, i.e., the simulated southward
shift of cyclones in the North Atlantic and the related increase of extreme precipitation and wind speed in particular in
the Mediterranean in winter, are associated with large-scale atmospheric circulation changes. 相似文献

Oxygen partial pressure influences the electrical conductivity of enstatite because it affects the point-defect concentrations in enstatite. The behavior of the defect concentrations with PO2 are obtained for open and partially closed conditions. On the basis of the defect variations, models for the effect of oxygen pressure on the conductivity can be constructed. The first-order models, which assume one defect type transporting all the charge, predict log(PO2) vs. log(conductivity) slopes that are not in agreement with slopes derived from measurements on natural single crystals of enstatite. The disagreement could result from: (1) more defect species being present than the assumed charge-neutrality condition gives, or (2) the charge is transported by two or more defect types. The data suggesting the latter is the cause of the disagreement, and hence the experimentally derived activation energies must be treated carefully. 相似文献

The formation internal energy and volume of the point-defect species in olivine are derived for a number of approximate charge-neutrality conditions. The formation parameters of an effectively charged point defect are a function of the approximate condition of charge neutrality. Since the approximate charge-neutrality condition depends upon the partial pressure of oxygen and the activity of enstatite in olivine, changes in the magnitude of these thermodynamic-state variables result in different values of the formation parameters if the charge-neutrality regime is altered. The fractional change in the formation internal energies of the energetically unfavorable defects, such as Si vacancies, is small between the charge-neutrality regions while the fractional change for the favorable defects, such as Mg vacancies, is large. 相似文献

The significance of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC) for regional and hemispheric climate change requires
a complete understanding using fully coupled climate models. Here we present a persistent, decadal oscillation in a coupled
atmosphere–ocean general circulation model. While the present study is limited by the lack of comparisons with paleo-proxy
records, the purpose is to reveal a new theoretically interesting solution found in the fully-coupled climate model. The model
exhibits two multi-century-long stable states with one dominated by decadal MOC oscillations. The oscillations involve an
interaction between anomalous advective transport of salt and surface density in the North Atlantic subpolar gyre. Their time
scale is fundamentally determined by the advection. In addition, there is a link between the MOC oscillations and North Atlantic
Oscillation (NAO)-like sea level pressure anomalies. The analysis suggests an interaction between the NAO and an anomalous
subpolar gyre circulation in which sea ice near and south of the Labrador Sea plays an important role in generating a large
local thermal anomaly and a meridional temperature gradient. The latter induces a positive feedback via synoptic eddy activity
in the atmosphere. In addition, the oscillation only appears when the Nordic Sea is completely covered by sea ice in winter,
and deep convection is active only near the Irminger Sea. Such conditions are provided by a substantially colder North Atlantic

A review of climatic variability is given with a focus on abrupt changes during the last glacial. Evidence from palaeoclimatic
archives suggests that these were most likley due to reorganisations of the atmosphere–ocean system. The mechanisms responsible
for these changes are presented. Their implication for future climate changes is discussed in light of recent climate model
simulations.

Six major groups of trilobites from the Silurian and Devonian of Japan are evaluated for their paleobiogeographical signature. Silurian illaenids and scutelluids show four generic‐level and at least two species‐level links with the Australian segment of the Gondwana paleocontinent; encrinurids also indicate two generic‐level links with Australia and also the South China paleocontinent; whilst Devonian phacopids, and possibly proetids, suggest at least two generic‐level links with the North China paleocontinent. These different patterns may reflect the fragmentary biostratigraphical record of Japanese trilobites, but they also appear to reflect paleoenvironmental parameters associated with lithofacies, and paleoecology. Thus, Japanese assemblages of proetids and phacopids occurring in deep‐water clastic lithofacies have counterparts in similar settings in North China, and Japanese scutelluids and illaenids are strongly associated with shallow marine carbonate lithofacies that are similar to those of their occurrences in Australia. Japanese encrinurids occur in carbonate rocks indicative of shallow marine settings in the Kurosegawa Terrane, and they demonstrate a consistent paleobiogeographical affinity with Australia and South China. Larval ecology cannot be directly assessed for Japanese trilobite groups. However, proetids have consistently been shown to have planktonic protaspides, whereas illaenids, scutelluids, and encrinurids have benthic protaspides. Planktonic protaspides would have a greater propensity for distribution in ocean currents than benthic ones, and therefore may be of more limited paleobiogeographical utility. The combined data from the six different groups indicates that the complex paleobiogeographical patterns of the Japanese trilobite assemblages need to be interpreted with caution, and similarity of taxa does not necessarily denote paleogeographical proximity to other regions. 相似文献

Understanding movement behaviour is essential for effective management of fishery species. Dart tags were used to study coastal movement patterns of white steenbras Lithognathus lithognathus, an overexploited seabream (Sparidae) in South Africa. In total, 6 962 fish (190–1 080 mm fork length) were tagged throughout the species’ distributional range, in four long-term fish-tagging programmes. The predominant behaviour recorded was residency, with relatively short-ranging movements. More than 60% of the 351 recaptured fish were recaptured within 1 km of their tagging site, some of which were at liberty in excess of three years. Most of the juveniles (93.9%), subadults (71.7%) and adults (64.0%) were recaptured within 10 km. Occasional long-distance movements of up to 800 km were recorded. Recapture distances were positively, but weakly, correlated with fish fork length (n = 257 fish measured at recapture; r2 = 0.166, p < 0.001). Low levels of connectivity among coastal areas suggest that large-scale annual spawning migrations, as previously hypothesised for this species, are unlikely, which raises the possibility of multiple spawning sites. Seventy-seven percent of L. lithognathus tagged within three marine protected areas (MPAs) were recaptured within the same MPA, suggesting that area closures provide protection for L. lithognathus through the post-estuarine juvenile, subadult and adult life stages. We confirm that the country’s current network of coastal MPAs plays a vital role in sustaining this species, and suggest that additional closures, or otherwise substantial reductions in catch rates, are necessary for the species’ recovery. 相似文献

Understanding the level of connectivity between estuarine and coastal waters is essential for appropriate management of estuarine-associated taxa. Most studies have focused on the role of a single estuary, while limited research exists on the importance of multiple estuaries to individuals of estuarine-associated species. This study used acoustic telemetry to assess the usage of multiple estuaries and coastal waters by the estuarine-dependent spotted grunter Pomadasys commersonnii. Twenty-six adult fish were tagged with acoustic transmitters in the Kariega and Bushmans estuaries, South Africa, and their movements along a 300-km stretch of Indian Ocean coastline were monitored for up to 17 months. Tagged individuals spent most of their time in the estuary where they were tagged (55% and 85% for fish tagged in the two estuaries, respectively), followed by time in the sea (30% and 15%) and in other estuaries (15% and <1%). The mean durations of sea trips for fish tagged in the Kariega Estuary or Bushmans Estuary, respectively, were 25 days (range 3–55) and 12 days (range 2–22). Of the fish that went to sea, 93% from the Kariega Estuary and 60% from the Bushmans Estuary visited other estuaries. Most visits were undertaken to the Swartkops, Bushmans and Kowie estuaries, although the longest durations were spent in the Sundays Estuary. Individuals moved to estuaries up to 130 km away. The total distance travelled between estuaries by an individual during the study was ~529 km, with means of 201 and 184 km, respectively, for fish tagged in the Kariega and Bushmans estuaries. Despite covering large distances between estuaries, individuals often returned to their tagging estuary. Residency in their tagging estuary, combined with frequent visits to a neighbouring estuary, highlights the importance of estuarine habitats for this popular fish species, even after reaching maturity. 相似文献
