This study demonstrates that intracrystalline organic matter in coral skeletons is well preserved over century timescales. The extent of preservation of organic matter in coral skeletons was investigated by measuring total organic carbon (TOC), total hydrolyzable amino acid (THAA), chloropigment, and lipid concentrations in 0-300 year old annual growth bands from Montastraea annularis (Florida Keys) and Porites lutea (Red Sea). Organic matter intrinsic to the calcium carbonate mineral (intracrystalline) was analyzed separately from total skeletal organic matter. The Red Sea coral had less TOC (0.02-0.04 wt%) than the Florida Keys coral (0.04-0.11 wt%), but a higher percent of intracrystalline organic matter in all annual bands measured. Carbon in the form of THAA, most likely from mineral-precipitating proteins, contributed 30-45% of the TOC in both corals. Carbon in lipids represented about 3% of the TOC in the coral skeletons. Chlorophyll-a and b were present in annual bands where endolithic algae were present, but these compounds were minor contributors to TOC. The distribution of specific organic compounds showed that organic matter was well preserved throughout the time period sampled in both the total and intracrystalline pools. Variations in THAA were not correlated with TOC over time, suggesting that organic matter that is involved in biomineralization, like amino acids, may be deposited in response to different environmental factors than are other components of skeletal organic matter. Differences in the quantity and composition of organic matter between the two corals investigated here were assessed using principal components analysis and suggest that location, species and skeletal structure may all influence organic matter content and possibly the degree of physical protection of organic matter by the coral skeleton. Further, our study suggests that intracrystalline organic matter may be better protected from diagenesis than non-intracrystalline organic matter and may therefore be a more reliable source of organic matter for paleoceanographic studies than total skeletal organic matter.  相似文献

In 1981 the Florida Keys Aquaduct Authority permitted the construction of a new water transmission pipeline through the Florida Keys, USA. The seagrasses Halodule wrightii and Thalassia testudinum in an estuary and wetland area north of Key Largo would be removed by a portion of the pipeline construction. Consequently, government construction permit conditions required restoration of these seagrasses.After construction, Halodule shoots were planted over the pipeline trench in an area 6.1 × 975 m on 0.9 m centres. Additional transplantation of Halodule and Thalassia was deemed necessary, especially in areas lateral to the pipeline trench, and was done later in 1981 by a second party. Results after ten months showed that 31.1 ± 0.9% (X ± S.E.) of the area in the pipeline trench was covered by Halodule shoots. 1261 Thalassia seedlings were observed in the entire affected pipeline area. This is the first report of pipeline damage restored with seagrasses.  相似文献

For the first time seagrass rehabilitation was attempted in a tropical nation, Jamaica. Repairs to a variety of developmental impact types were attempted with test plots: dredge and fill, bauxite and oil spills, channelization, urban run-off, urban sewage, river bulkheading, jetty construction and artificial beach, industrial lagoons, saline lagoons, thermal effluents, and cement tailings. Three species were routinely planted (Thalassia testudinum, Halodule wrightii, Syringodium filiforme) plus Ruppia maritima in saline lagoons, each by two planting techniques. Types of damage which were successfully attempted to be restored for the first time were from heated wastes, bauxite spills, jettied river mouths, small scale oil spills, and diluted urban wastes. Types of pollution damage previously repaired in subtropics and temperate zones, which could be successfully repaired in the tropics also were dredge and fill and urban run-off. Erosion seagrass restoration repair was partially successful at some sites. Attempts to repair high salinity lagoons (up to 160‰) and cement tailings were unsuccessful. Functional species were found which could tolerate ongoing pollutant loads in some cases.  相似文献

The need for most efficient use of energy is abruptly in conflict with the need to maintain environmental quality in terms of heated effluents released from power plants. This study synthesizes biological results found from four effluent canals from power plants releasing heat on shallow estuaries: tropics, edge of tropics and subtropics. The dominant near-shore community in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean is that of Thalassia, rich in animal and plant abundance and biomass. Summer mean temperatures in all three estuaries ranged around 30°C. Results show sustained temperatures of +5°C in summer denude the area of the Thalassia community. Temperatures +1 and +1.5°C were minimally damaging to the studied areas and can be considered rational release temperatures. Insufficient data was available at +2°C to make a statement; +4°C areas showed intense damage to the biological communities at all locations; +3°C effect varied from severe damage in the subtropics to 40% damage in the tropics. Recommended summer heated effluent release for power plants eliminating heat onto Thalassia beds would certainly nerver be greater than +3°C. A trade-off decision must be made by decision-makers as to +3 or +2°C as the upper permissable limit. Winter release of effluent temperature in areas where winter temperatures fall below 25°C could be above +3°C apparently without damage. Tropical and subtropical ecosystems are on the brink of disaster and small increments of change by man's activities can push them beyond tolerance limits. Evidently the marine tropics differ from marine temperate zones in their capacity to assimilate man's activities.  相似文献

Muddy carbonate deposits near the Dry Tortugas, Florida, are characterized by high organic carbon remineralization rates. However, approximately half of the total sedimentary organic matter potentially supporting remineralization is occluded in CaCO3 minerals (intracrystalline). While a portion of nonintracrystalline organic matter appears to cycle rapidly, intracrystalline organic matter has an approximately constant concentration with depth, suggesting that as long as its protective mineral matrix is intact, it is not readily remineralized. Organic matter in excess of intracrystalline organic matter that is preserved may have a variety of mineral associations (e.g., intercrystalline, adsorbed or detrital). In surface sediment, aspartic acid contributed ∼22 mole % and ∼50 mole % to nonintracrystalline and intracrystalline pools, respectively. In deeper sediment (1.6-1.7m), the composition of hydrolyzable amino acids in both pools was similar (aspartic acid ∼40 mole %). Like amino acids, intracrystalline and nonintracrystalline fatty acids have different compositions in surface sediments, but are indistinguishable at depth. These data suggest that preserved organic matter in the nonintracrystalline pool is stabilized by its interactions with CaCO3. Neutral lipids are present in very low abundances in the intracrystalline pool and are extensively degraded in both the intracrystalline and nonintracrystalline pools, suggesting that mineral interactions do not protect these compounds from degradation. The presence of chlorophyll-a, but absence of phytol, in the intracrystalline lipid pool demonstrates that chloropigments are present only in the nonintracrystalline pool. Sedimentary chloropigments decrease with depth at similar rates in Dry Tortugas sediments as found in alumino-silicate sediments from the Long Island Sound, suggesting that chloropigment degradation is largely unaffected by mineral interactions. Overall, however, inclusion and protection of organic matter by biominerals is a major pathway for organic matter preservation in this low-organic carbon, biomineral-rich regime.  相似文献

Diatom frustule-bound organic compounds presumably play an important role in biomineralization and constitute an important pool of organic matter preserved in diatom frustule-rich sediments. In this study, detailed analysis of diatom frustule-bound organic matter in opal-rich Southern Ocean plankton and sediments revealed for the first time the presence of low molecular weight, UV light absorbing compounds called mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs). Chemically cleaned diatom frustule-derived biosilica was dissolved in HF, releasing bound or entrapped organic compounds that were subsequently characterized using liquid chromatography with UV-Vis and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC/PDA/ESI-MS). Palythine ([M+H]+ = 245), porphyra-334 ([M+H]+ = 347) and shinorine ([M+H]+ = 333) were the most abundant MAAs detected in HF digests of plankton and sediment. Traces of asterina ([M+H]+ = 289), palythinol ([M+H]+ = 303) and palythinic acid ([M+H]+ = 329) were also detected. MAAs in cleaned HF digested frustules were up to two orders of magnitude more abundant than methanol extractable MAAs. MAAs are substituted with acid hydrolysable amino acid residues. Our results suggest that MAAs, and not proteins, could be responsible for the high proportion of the amino acids glycine and threonine found in hydrolysates of HF digested diatom-rich environmental samples. Total MAAs accounted for 3-27% of the carbon and 2-18% of total nitrogen in the frustules undergoing various chemical cleaning treatments. This is the first report of MAAs in close association with a mineral phase and we hypothesize that the mineral matrix could stabilize these compounds, thereby enhancing photoprotection against the harmful effects of UV light. The presence of frustule-bound MAAs in sediment cores further suggests the possibility that they could be used in compound-specific isotope analysis of diatom-bound organic matter and as indicators of past solar irradiance.  相似文献

After several years of environmental planning, and the Port of Miami Expansion Program having been started, a large-scale seagrass restoration project, including a test plot programme, was initiated in a damaged estuary in south-eastern Florida, Biscayne Bay, in 1982. For the project 13 test plots throughout the area were selected, totalling 10.38 acres in area, which is the largest test plot programme implemented to date, with the exception of our ongoing test plot programme in Jamaica (16.9 acres). Three seagrasses, Thalassia testudinum, Halodule wrightii and Syringodium filiforme, were transplanted at each test plot by two methods: 9.4–18.6 months after transplantation, survival and growth of the plants were measured (survival measurements taken by Connell Associates, Inc., 1983). Thalassia sprigs ranked first in survival followed by Halodule sprigs.Test plots differed widely in the survival and growth of the three species. Nine of the 13 plots had one species/method successful enough for further planting. Mid-bay sites damaged by dredging had two species surviving 60% or more. High turbidity sites were the least successful. Only Thalassia sprigs were successful at high energy sites. Syringodium sprigs showed poor survival overall, and are not recommended for transplanting. Thalassia seedlings appeared adequate in low energy sites, but required heavier anchoring in medium energy sites. The major impacts to the test plots were dredging, filling and urban run-off. No industrial effluent sites were included.  相似文献
