Amounts of tar stranded on Florida beaches were determined periodically over one year (September 1979–October 1980). Results show that tar fouling of southeast Florida beaches is an order of magnitude greater than the rest of the state. This may result from the extensive ship traffic in the Straits of Florida. There is no evidence that any Florida beaches received increased amounts of tar as a result of the 1979 Ixtoc-1 blowout in the southern Bay of Campeche. There is also no evidence that the amounts of tar on southeast Florida beaches have increased over amounts measured in API studies conducted in 1958 and 1971.  相似文献

Organic compounds which are chloroform extractible from seawater affect gypsum precipitation by inhibiting the nucleation of crystals. The effect is selective towards calcium-populated crystal habit faces and results in the growth of more tabular, equidimensional crystals. Studies using model organic compounds suggest that the inhibition takes place through an adsorption mechanism and show that longer-chained n-fatty acids are more actively adsorbed. The specific adsorption mechanism (at Ca2+ habit faces) is also supported by the fact that the free-acid (base-soluble) fraction of the chloroform extractibles from seawater is more active than the neutral fraction. The calcium ion complexing ability of model organic compounds is not correlatable with their inhibitory effects on gypsum crystal nucleation.  相似文献

The Environmental benefits and costs of conservation tillage   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
 Every production practice, including conservation tillage, has positive or negative environmental consequences that may involve air, land, water, and/or the health and ecological status of wildlife. The negative impacts associated with agricultural production, and the use of conventional tillage systems in particular, include soil erosion, energy use, leaching and runoff of agricultural chemicals, and carbon emissions. Several of these impacts are quantified. The conclusions suggest that the use of conservation tillage does result in less of an adverse impact on the environment from agricultural production than does conventional tillage by reducing surface water runoff and wind erosion. Additionally, wildlife habitat will be enhanced to some extent with the adoption of conservation tillage and the benefits to be gained from carbon sequestration will depend on the soil remaining undisturbed. Finally, further expansion of conservation tillage on highly erodible land will unquestionably result in an increase in social benefits, but the expected gains will be modest.  相似文献

For example, at 6943 Å (ruby laser line), 11. secz cm must be subtracted from the ‘refractive distance’. This paper demonstrates the involvement of dissolved organic compounds in the precipitation of gypsum from near-surface seawater. The general solubility and oxidation behavior of these compounds is discussed. Qualitatively different results have been obtained between samples collected from remote areas and those collected from areas of intensive human use.  相似文献

Free fatty acids make up the bulk (50–84% wt/wt) of lipid materials recovered from artificial gypsum precipitates and crystals collected from sea salt evaporation pans. Both the fatty acids and hydrocarbons associated with artificial gypsum tend to be of longer mean chain length than organic materials dissolved in the mother liquor. Increased specific adsorption of n-fatty acids at Ca2+ sites on gypsum surfaces is positively correlated with alkyl chain length. Neutral lipids were not significantly enriched in either type of gypsum precipitates. The fatty acids associated with gypsum from sea salt evaporation pans are branched fatty acids in contrast to the predominantly normal acids associated with artificial gypsum samples. Differences in the two adsorbed acid distributions are attributed to the unique lipids of hypersaline biota.  相似文献
