Aspects of the reproductive biology of the brown mussel Perna perna at the Iture rocky beach near Cape Coast, Ghana, were studied from September 2014 to August 2015. The current study was aimed at providing information useful for managing the mussel fishery in this locality and also that would form the basis for designing appropriate culture methods for the species. Microscopic examination of fresh smears of gonadal material, as well as histological preparations of the gonad, were used to study the sexuality and breeding pattern of the species. Monthly gonadal and condition indices were also determined. Perna perna exhibited gonochoristic sexuality with a sex ratio of approximately 1:1 throughout the study period. Sexes were identifiable at shell lengths of 15.0–19.9 mm. Five stages of gonadal development were identified in both sexes. Gametogenic activity was continuous throughout the year, with two major spawning activities, from April to June and from August to December. These periods coincided with the major and minor rainy seasons, respectively, as well as the major upwelling period in August. Condition indices suggest that the mussels were in better condition for harvesting in March and August prior to the major spawning events.  相似文献

Combining paleomagnetic data for 17 new sites from the northwest portion of the (Oligocene) San Juan volcanic field of southern Colorado with data for 29 sites previously published yields a paleomagnetic pole at 85°N, 114°E (with a 95% confidence circle of 7.5° radius). A further combination of the San Juan data with the results of other studies on rocks of Oligocene age from tectonically stable parts of North America gives a mid-Tertiary reference pole located at 81°N, 132.5°E, with a confidence circle of approximately 4°. Mid-Tertiary paleomagnetic poles for the western edge of the continent diverge markedly from this reference pole.  相似文献

Until now, palaeoclimatic reconstructions for the major stages in the development of the Quaternary loess–palaeosol sequence on the Russian Plain have been based on pedological, palynological and faunal (vertebrates and molluscs) analyses. In order to demonstrate the palaeoclimatic influence on the magnetic properties of this sequence, the magnetic susceptibility signature of the Strelitsa type section in the Upper Don basin is compared with a detailed landscape – climate reconstruction of loess and soil from palynological data. Large amplitude fluctuations of palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironment are reflected clearly in the lithology and in the rock magnetic properties, which usually are enhanced in wet and warm interglacial periods, but stay at low levels during cold glacial epochs. Palynological climate zonation, however, is sometimes in conflict with the pedologic–magnetic record. Strong climate fluctuations, as indicated by changing pollen assemblages, are not always paralleled by corresponding changes in lithology and/or rock magnetic properties. Alternatively, light coloured illuvial horizons with low magnetic signal sometimes appear to have formed during early stages of interglacials, and the top parts of some palaeosols apparently formed during glacial stages. Palaeomagnetic results are reported from eight sites in an Upper Devonian basic intrusion (the Msissi norite) in southeast Morocco. Specimens from one site are suspected of having been affected by lightning, but results from the other seven sites indicate the presence of a less-stable component, probably of viscous origin. The pole position corresponding to the stable component(0.5°S, 25°E, A95 = 16.5) is interposed between the Middle Cambrian/Ordovician pole and the Lower Carboniferous pole on the African polar wander curve. When the southern continents are reassembled on the Smith/Hallam reconstruction of Gondwanaland the new Moroccan Devoniån pole is in excellent agreement with the corresponding portion of the main Australian polar-wander curve. This places additional constraints on the possible date of fusion of the separate Southeast Australian plate with the rest of Gondwanaland, postulated recently on palaeomagnetic grounds by M.W. McElhinny and B.J.J. Embleton (1974). The combined African/Australian polar-wander curve is compared with the South American curve, and two possible interpretations of available data are discussed, one involving possible relative tectonic motion between South America and the rest of Gondwanaland during the Lower and Middle Palaeozoic, and the other, favoured here, requiring a reassessment of the ages of several South American pole determinations.  相似文献
