Using in situ strength measurements at pressures up to 10 GPa and at room temperature, 400, 600, and 700°C, we examined rheological
properties of olivine, orthopyroxene, and chromian-spinel contained in a mantle-derived xenolith. Mineral strengths were estimated
using widths of X-ray diffraction peaks as a function of pressure, temperature, and time. Differential stresses of all minerals
increase with increasing pressure, but they decrease with increasing temperature because of elastic strain on compression
and stress relaxation during heating. During compression at room temperature, all minerals deform plastically at differential
stress of 4–6 GPa. During subsequent heating, thermally induced yielding is observed in olivine at 600°C. Neither orthopyroxene
nor spinel shows complete stress relaxation, but both retain some stress even at 700°C. The strength of the minerals decreases
in the order of chromian-spinel ≈ orthopyroxene > olivine for these conditions. This order of strength is consistent with
the residual pressure of fluid inclusions in mantle xenoliths. 相似文献

An excitation of inertial oscillation in the upper layer east of course of Typhoon 9019 was fortuitously observed at three surface buoys deployed during the Ocean Mixed Layer Experiment (OMLET). The observed inertial oscillation was compared with wind fluctuation measured at Ocean Weather Station T (29°N, 135°E) which was placed at the center of a triangle with three vertexes occupied by the respective surface buoys. Inertial oscillation is effectively excited in the mixed layer at the eastern margin of the typhoon by a rapid decrease of wind rather than by prevailing strong wind. It is shown by means of a least square deviation that the inertial oscillation observed in the mixed layer has a period of 23.9 hours shorter than the local inertial period of 24.7 hours. This shorter period suggests that the inertial oscillation has the finite velocities of phase and group as an inertial internal wave. A theoretically obtained ratio of vertical component of group velocity to that of phase velocity, approximately agrees with observed value. The inertial internal wave is excited by fluctuation of divergence with near inertial period in the mixed layer. 相似文献

The measurements of the vertical transport of CO2 were carried out over the Sea of Japan using the specially designed pier of Kyoto University on September 20 to 22, 2000. CO2 fluxes were measured by the eddy correlation and aerodynamic techniques. Both techniques showed comparable CO2 fluxes during sea breeze conditions: −0.001 to −0.08 mg m−2s−1 with the mean of −0.05 mg m−2s−1. This means that the measuring site satisfies the fetch requirement for meteorological observations under sea breeze conditions. Moreover, the eddy diffusivity coefficient used in the aerodynamic technique is found to be consistent with the coefficient used in the eddy correlation technique. The present result leads us to conclude that the aerodynamic technique may be applicable to underway CO2 flux measurements over the ocean and may be used in place of the bulk technique. The important point is the need to maintain a measuring accuracy of CO2 concentration difference of the order of 0.1 ppmv on the research vessels or the buoys. 相似文献

Surface temperature, salinity, concentrations of silicate (Si) and nitrate + nitrite (N), and in vivo fluorescence (Fluor) were investigated in the marginal ice zone (MIZ) and the seasonally open oceanic zone (SOOZ) (32–40°E, 64–69°S) from February 23 to 28 1992. In the MIZ the mean Si and N were 67.8 ± 2.2 M and 32.5 ± 1.7 M, respectively. There was a trend that low N values coincided with high Fluor values. Observation conducted at one point (64°S, 38°E) revealed a diel variation pattern in Fluor. Applying this pattern of deviation from noon value, all Fluor data were normalized to value at local noon. In the MIZ a significant negative correlation was observed between the normalized Fluor and N but not Si. On the other hand, Si decreased continuously from south to north in the SOOZ and was negatively correlated with the normalized Fluor. Difference in Si concentration was about 30 M between the sea around 64°S and the MIZ, while the difference in N concentration was estimated as less than 10 M. If diatoms take up silicate and nitrogen at an approximate ratio of 1:1, additional nitrogenous nutrients other than nitrate and nitrite (e.g. ammonia, urea etc.) would be required. In this case, an f-ratio of lower than 33% is obtained. It is suggested that in the MIZ abundance of phytoplankton community dominated by non-diatom increases utilizing nitrate while in the SOOZ abundance of phytoplankton community dominated by diatoms increases consuming Si and regenerated nitrogen. 相似文献

Variations of the Kuroshio Axis South of Kyushu in Relation to the Large Meander of the Kuroshio 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The characteristics of the Kuroshio axis south of Kyushu, which meanders almost sinusoidally, are clarified in relation to
the large meander of the Kuroshio by analyzing water temperature data during 1961–95 and sea level during 1984–95. The shape
of the Kuroshio axis south of Kyushu is classified into three categories of small, medium, and large amplitude of meander.
The small amplitude category occupies more than a half of the large-meander (LM) period, while the medium amplitude category
takes up more than a half of the non-large-meander (NLM) period. Therefore, the amplitude and, in turn, the curvature of the
Kuroshio axis is smaller on average during the LM period than the NLM period. The mean Kuroshio axis during the LM period
is located farther north at every longitude south of Kyushu than during the NLM period, with a slight difference west of the
Tokara Islands and a large difference to the east. A northward shift of the Kuroshio axis in particular east of the Tokara
Islands induces small amplitude and curvature of the meandering shape during the LM period. During the NLM period, the meandering
shape and position south of Kyushu change little with Kuroshio volume transport. In the LM formation stage, the variation
of the Kuroshio axis is small west of the Tokara Islands but large to the east due to a small meander of the Kuroshio. In
the LM decay stage, the Kuroshio meanders greatly south of Kyushu and is located stably near the coast southeast of Kyushu.

The first impoundment of the Three Gorges Dam reservoir in China started from a water surface elevation of 95 m on June 1,
2003 and reached 135 m on June 15, 2003. Shortly after the water level reached 135 m, many slopes began to deform and some
landslides occurred. The Qianjiangping landslide is the largest one; it occurred on the early morning of July 14, 2003 and
caused great loss of lives and property. Field investigation revealed that, although failure occurred after the reservoir
reached 135 m, the stability of the slope was already reduced by preexisting sheared bedding planes. To study the mechanism
of the rapid motion of this reactivated landslide, two soil samples were taken from a yellow clay layer and a black silt layer
in the sliding zone, respectively, and a series of ring shear tests were conducted on the samples. One series of ring shear
tests simulates the creep deformation behavior, while the other series simulates different shear rates. Conclusions drawn
from analysis of the ring shear tests indicate that the mechanism of the rapid motion of the reactivated landslide was caused
by the rate effect of the black silt layer during the motion phase after the creep failure. The yellow clay layer did not
play any important role in the rapid motion in the 2003 event. 相似文献

Abstract. Near-infrared (NIR) and visible light microthermometry was applied to the fluid inclusions in sphalerite from a possible southeast extension of the Toyoha polymetallic deposit. Sphalerite occurs as euhedral-subhedral crystals or collo-form aggregates with a variety of color, which contain a well-developed growth banding. Combined with morphological observations, fluid inclusions in dark-colored sphalerite were examined using a near-infrared light microscopic technique, whereas those in light-colored sphalerite and quartz were examined by a conventional visible light microscopy.
Salinities of fluid inclusions in dark-colored sphalerite have a wide variation (1.0–10.3 wt % NaCl equiv.) compared to that in light-colored sphalerite and quartz (0.0–3.4 wt % NaCl equiv.). These variations suggest that the conventional microthermometric data from light-colored sphalerite and quartz were inadequate to interpret the ore formation process. Dark-colored colloform sphalerite and a dark core of subhedral sphalerite formed from high-salinity fluids (6.5–10.3 wt % NaCl equiv.) under highly supersaturated conditions with respect to sphalerite.
The NIR and visible light microthermometry of fluid inclusions in sphalerite combined with its morphological observations is an invaluable method to infer the formation conditions of sphalerite. We have examined the effects of the spinel-garnet phase transition on subsidence of extensional sedimentary basins. For a constant positive Clapeyron slope ( dP/dT ), the phase boundary moves downwards in the syn-rift and upwards in the post-rift phase. For a non-linear Clapeyron curve ( dP/dT > 0 above 900°C and dP/dT < 0 below 900°C), theory predicts for the reaction of the spinel-garnet phase transition, the direction of phase boundary movement is dependent on the stretching factor, the position of the Clapeyron curve and the lithospheric thickness. A smaller syn-rift and larger post-rift subsidence are predicted for a deeper phase boundary and a thicker lithosphere. The model with a non-linear Clapeyron curve is applied to the subsidence histories of a young extensional basin (Gulf of Lion) and an old continental margin (eastern Canada). The observed syn-rift uplift and the larger post-rift subsidence can be reasonably explained by this model, where the optimum depth of the phase boundary for eastern Canada (˜90 km) is consistent with the estimate from seismic observations and is larger than that for the Gulf of Lion (˜ 50 km). The depth of the spinel-garnet phase boundary is sensitive to the composition of mantle rocks and increases with the extraction of basaltic components from the lithosphere, compatible with our result that the phase boundary is deeper for an older and thicker lithosphere. Thus the surface movement associated with the rifting for these areas may reflect the chemical evolution of the continental lithosphere. 相似文献
