Soil water repellency is a widespread phenomenon with the capacity to alter hydrological and geomorphological processes. Water repellency decays with time, and the consequences are only of concern during the timescale at which the water repellency persists. This study aimed to characterize the influence of temperature and humidity on the breakdown of water repellency. Apparent contact angle measurements were carried out on samples consisting of sand treated with stearic acid as well as naturally repellent dune sands and composts. Temperature and humidity were controlled using a cooled incubator and a purpose designed enclosed box in which humidity could be raised or lowered. Results showed the contact angle of the stearic‐acid‐treated sands decayed with time and that there was a significant increase with stearic acid concentration. For all samples, the decay in apparent contact angle could be described with a continuous breakdown model. The stearic‐acid‐treated sands showed a significant increase in contact angle with relative humidity at a temperature of 10 and 20 °C. These differences diminished with increasing temperature. Similar results were seen for the dune sands and composts. Despite the influence of temperature and humidity on contact angles, there was no significant change in the rate at which the contact angle decayed in any sample. Absolute humidity was found to provide a more relevant indicator than relative humidity when assessing the influence of humidity on repellency over a range of temperatures. The contact angle initially increased with absolute humidity before plateauing owing to the confounding effect of temperature. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Underground geological storage of CO2 (GSC) requires a high level of subsurface understanding that is often hindered by a lack of data. This study demonstrates the use of stratigraphic forward modelling (SFM) in generating and characterising a static reservoir model using limited well data, with multiple potential applications within the GSC workflow. Sedsim SFM software was used to create a static model of the Surat Basin, including a high‐resolution nested model of the EPQ‐7 GSC tenement within the basin. Deposition and burial of the Jurassic Precipice Sandstone, Evergreen Formation and Hutton Sandstone were simulated. Modelling results show a close match with gamma‐ray well logs in the tenement area, and the model can be considered a credible model of the subsurface. The Sedsim‐predicted formation thicknesses and porosity and permeability distributions meet criteria set for GSC, suggesting that the EPQ‐7 tenement may be a prospective GSC location.  相似文献

We have developped a new method for the scheduling ofastronomical automatic telescopes, in the framework of theautonomous TAROT instrument. The MAJORDOME software canhandle a variety of observations, constrained, periodic, etc., and produces a timeline for the night, which may bemodified at any time to take into account the specificconditions of the night. The MAJORDOME can also handletarget of opportunity observations without delay.  相似文献

Abstract— Gorter and Glikson (2000) proposed that the Fohn‐1 structure in the Timor Sea north of Australia probably is an impact structure. Examination of their evidence reveals that it is almost impossible to confirm any of their conclusions, as the authors do not provide sufficient detail of their experimental methods. Problems with the presentation of both seismic and geochemical data cast further doubt on their conclusions. Absence of evidence for shock metamorphism and non‐chondritic siderophile element patterns in the few samples analysed make it likely that Fohn‐1 is neither a probable, nor even a possible, impact structure.  相似文献

We present the basic features and preliminary results of the interface between our spectrophotometric model GRASIL (which calculates galactic SEDs from the UV to the submm with a detailed computation of dust extinction and thermal reemission) with the semi-analytical galaxy formation model GALFORM (which computes galaxy formation and evolution in the hierarchical scenario, providing the star formation history as an input to our model). With these two models we are able to synthesize simulated samples of a few thousand galaxies for statistical studies of galaxy properties to investigate galaxy formation and evolution. There is good agreement with the available SED and luminosity function data. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Since the Saturn orbit insertion (SOI) of the Cassini spacecraft, in July 2004, the Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) has obtained a large number of thermal infrared spectra of Saturn's rings. Over the two and a half years of observations to date, ring temperatures were retrieved for a large range of unique geometries, inaccessible from Earth. Understanding their dependencies with phase angle and local time is a clue to understanding the thermal properties and dynamics of Saturn's ring particles.Azimuthal scans of rings, which have been obtained by CIRS at constant radial distance from the planet, have been planned to measure ring temperature variations with local hour angle. Over 47 azimuthal scans for Saturn's main rings (A, B, C and Cassini Division) have been retrieved to date, on both lit and unlit sides, at different phase angles and spacecraft elevations. The first measurements of the transient thermal episode of eclipse cooling in the planetary shadow have also been obtained for all three rings. In this paper, we present an overview of all azimuthal scans obtained by the Cassini/CIRS instrument so far and the dependencies of the temperature and the filling factor with the phase angle and the local hour angle. The ring temperature varies with longitude as the input heating flux coming from Saturn and the Sun changes. The decrease in temperature with the increasing phase angle on both the lit and the unlit sides and for most of the local time also suggests the presence of slowly rotating particles. The crossing of the planet's shadow generates drastic azimuthal variations in temperature, up to 20 K in the C ring. The strong anisotropy of emission observed outside the shadow between low and high phase angles decreases when ring particles cross the shadow, suggesting that particles are almost isothermal in the shadow. This suggests a thermal inertia associated with a rotating rate of particles low enough to have a thermal contrast on their surface. The temperature in the B ring is less sensitive to the phase angle effect on the lit side, suggesting that particles are close enough to form a flat layer at a scale larger than the particle's radius. On the unlit side, particles in the B ring are less sensitive to the lack of solar input than in the C ring or in the A ring. Azimuthal variations of the filling factor in the A ring are also detected with changing ring local time. This effect might be created by the presence of gravitational instabilities (wakes).  相似文献
