Coral mortality may result in macroalgal proliferation or a phase shift into an alga-dominated state. Subtidal, high-latitude western Indian Ocean coral communities at Sodwana Bay on the KwaZulu-Natal coast, South Africa, have experienced some mortality because of warm-water anomalies, storms and other causes, but the response of the macroalgae is unknown. We investigated the abundance and diversity of benthic algae on different hard natural substrata (dead digitate, brain and plate corals and beach rock) on Two-Mile Reef, Sodwana Bay. We also compared algal communities colonising ceramic, marble and pretreated ceramic tiles placed on the reef for six months. We identified 95 algae (14 Chlorophyta, 11 Phaeophyceae, 69 Rhodophyta and one cyanobacterium). Assemblages on natural and artificial substrata were dominated by the brown alga Lobophora variegata (Lamouroux) Womersley ex Oliveira and non-geniculate corallines (Rhodophyta, Corallinaceae). Cluster and ordination analyses revealed that the algae showed no affinity for particular substrata, whether natural or artificial. Algal cover was occasionally higher on rougher tiles and crustose corallines were significantly more abundant on marble than ceramic tiles. Two-Mile Reef had 23.1% dead and 48.4% live scleractinian coral cover, where dead corals were colonised indiscriminately by many small algal species, but there was no evidence of algal proliferation. The results provide a baseline for monitoring this high-latitude reef system.  相似文献

The microbial community of the flat laminated sediments in the hypersaline lagoon at Laguna Figueroa has undergone dramatic changes due to prolonged periods of submergence under fresh water. This paper describes the techniques used in the first comprehensive in situ ultrastructural study of a stratified microbial community formerly dominated by Microcoleus sp. and introduces the changes caused by flooding and burial. Flat mat desiccation polygons fixed in 2.5% buffered glutaraldehyde were studied by light and transmission electron microscopy. Typical pre-flood Microcoleus-dominated laminated mat from 1977 was compared to post-flood laminated mat from 1979. The technique faithfully preserves the various laminae with their associated organisms and sediment, Morphological identification of several genera of photosynthetic prokaryotes including cyanobacteria, purple, and green bacteria was made by analysis of cell membrane and wall structure. Amoebic cysts could also be recognized in situ. Bacteria of unknown generic affinity, but with distinctive ultrastructure were discovered. A filamentous purple photosynthetic bacterium was found to be a common component of the 1979 mat and two bacteria within a bacterium associations were seen in sections from the 1977 mat.  相似文献

A recent improvement in measuring accuracy together with the development of new techniques suggests that geodetic point coordination to 1 part in 108 will become a reality in the near future. As a first step, however, the reference frame in which the points are to be coordinated, must be refined. Lunar Laser Ranging offers a means of solving both of these problems. The necessary equations are developed and the shortcomings of the method are analysed.  相似文献

Commonly, geomagnetic prospection is performed via scalar magnetometers that measure values of the total magnetic intensity. Recent developments of superconducting quantum interference devices have led to their integration in full tensor magnetic gradiometry systems consisting of planar‐type first‐order gradiometers and magnetometers fabricated in thin‐film technology. With these systems measuring directly the magnetic gradient tensor and field vector, a significantly higher magnetic and spatial resolution of the magnetic maps is yield than those produced via conventional magnetometers. In order to preserve the high data quality in this work, we develop a workflow containing all the necessary steps for generating the gradient tensor and field vector quantities from the raw measurement data up to their integration into highresolution, lownoise, and artefactless two‐dimensional maps of the magnetic field vector. The gradient tensor components are processed by superposition of the balanced gradiometer signals and rotation into an Earth‐centred Earth‐fixed coordinate frame. As the magnetometers have sensitivity lower than that of gradiometers and the total magnetic intensity is not directly recorded, we employ Hilbert‐like transforms, e.g., integration of the gradient tensor components or the conversion of the total magnetic intensity derived by calibrated magnetometer readings to obtain these values. This can lead to a better interpretation of the measured magnetic anomalies of the Earth's magnetic field that is possible from scalar total magnetic intensity measurements. Our conclusions are drawn from the application of these algorithms on a survey acquired in South Africa containing full tensor magnetic gradiometry data.  相似文献

Major, trace-element, and Sr-, Nd-and Pbisotope data are presented for volcanics from 12 active or recently active volcanoes from the islands of Flores, Adonara, Lembata and Batu Tara in the eastern Sunda are. The volcanics vary in composition from low-K tholeiite, through medium-and high-K calcalkaline types to the K-rich leucite basanites of Batu Tara. From the tholeiites to the leucite basanites there are marked increases in the concentrations of LILE (K, Rb, Ba, Sr), LREE and La/Yb, and all the volcanics have high Ba/ Nb, La/Nb and Ba/La compared with mid-ocean ridge and intraplate eruptives. K/Cs values are generally lower than OIB values, and overlap those of other arc volcanics and northeast Indian Ocean sediments. The volcanics exhibit a broad range of 87Sr/86Sr (0.70468–0.70706), 143Nd/144Nd (0.512946–0.512447), and a moderate range in 206Pb/204Pb (18.825–19.143), 207Pb/ 204Pb (15.643–15.760) and 208Pb/204Pb (38.97–39.51). Trace-element and isotopic data suggest that the mantle beneath the eastern Sunda arc is a complex heterogeneous mixture of 3 or 4 major source components: MORB-source or depleted MORB-source, OIB-source and subducted Indian Ocean sediment. The low-K tholeiites were probably formed by relatively large degrees of melting of depleted MORB-source mantle, modified by subduction-related fluids, whereas the trace-element and isotopic characteristics of the K-rich volcanics suggest that they were derived from an OIB source which and been modified by a subduction-related melt component. The source components of the medium-to high-K calcalkaline rocks are more difficult to determine, and probably include mixtures of MORB-source or OIB-source, and melt/fluid derived from subducted oceanic sediment. Minor-and trace-element modelling calculations indicate substantial difficulties in producing the relatively low Ti-contents of arc volcanics by melting OIB-source mantle. Where OIB mantle is considered to be an important component of arc magmas it is suggested that the HFSE are buffered to relatively low concentration by a residual Ti-rich accessory phase.  相似文献

A method of compressing LAGEOS laser range measurements into normal points is described. First, the raw range measurements are screened, on a pass-by-pass basis, by a filter which utilizes the fact that the range varies with time very nearly like a quadratic curve. Second, the time series of the filtered range data over each pass is divided into small segments, typically of 150 s duration. Third, each separate segment is modelled by a unique low-order Chebyshev polvnomial, typically of order four. Fourth, the polynomial is interpolated at some instant, typically that corresponding to the mean time of the segment, to vield the normal point. Baseline measurements across Australia obtained from full rate data and from data compressed into 150 s normal points, agree to within the measurement error. These differences are mainly due to the effects of data distribution and pass geometry. Computer costs are substantially reduced.  相似文献

The Hili Manu peridotite occupies a key position at the outer limit of continental crust on the north coast of East Timor. Most models for the tectonic evolution of the Outer Banda Arc interpret peridotite bodies on Timor, such as Hili Manu, as fragments of young oceanic lithosphere from the Banda Arc (upper plate). However, recent workers have used major-element geochemistry to argue that the peridotite bodies on Timor were derived from the Australian subcontinental lithosphere. Our major, trace and isotopic geochemical study of the Hili Manu peridotite body supports a supra-subduction origin from either a forearc or backarc position for the Hili Manu peridotite. In particular, the wide range in Nd and Sr isotopic compositions, overlapping that of arc volcanics from the Sunda – Banda Island arc, and highly fractionated Nb/Ta values indicate a supra-subduction setting. As there is no evidence for subduction beneath the rifted Australian continental margin, it is unlikely that the Hili Manu peridotite is Australian subcontinental lithosphere. This result, along with the clear supra-subduction setting of the Ocuzzi peridotite and associated volcanics in West Timor, gives support to the interpretation that the Miocene collision between the Banda Arc and the Australian continental margin has produced widespread ‘Cordilleran’-style ophiolites on Timor.  相似文献
