Cooling rate (CR) effects on the intensity of thermoremanent magnetization has been documented for archaeomagnetic materials,
where cooling in laboratory conditions is generally much faster compared to natural cooling rates. Since the latter condition
also applies to many volcanic rocks, we have investigated in this study the influences of the CR on the determination of absolute
paleointensity using recent basaltic rocks. We used magnetically and thermally stable samples mainly containing Ti-poor pseudo-singledomain
titanomagnetites (the most widely used material for Thellier paleointensity experiments). These samples previously succeed
in retrieving the strength of laboratory field intensities with the Coe’s version of the Thellier method in a simulated paleointensity
experiment using similar cooling rates. Our experimental results indicate that the cooling rate effects produce systematic
and significant overestimates of the absolute intensity up to 70%. The effect can be much larger than predicted by Neél theory
for non-interacting single-domain grains. 相似文献

A palaeo- and rock-magnetic study was carried out on the Jurassic–Cretaceous Guaniguanico Cordillera (15 sites, 112 oriented cores) in order to define a preliminary magnetostratigraphy and to obtain some constraints on the tectonic evolution of western Cuba. Rock-magnetic experiments indicate Ti-poor titanomagnetites as principal remanence carriers. Two magnetic phases seem to be present in a few samples: some spinels, which saturate at moderate magnetic fields and goethite, with higher coercivity. The presence of hematite (or mixture of spinels and hematite) is apparent in two units. In most cases the characteristic palaeodirections could be determined above 300°C. Eleven sites yield normal magnetic polarity and four reverse. The polarity zones can be tentatively correlated to chrons CM29–C24 in the reference geomagnetic polarity time scale. The mean palaeodirection calculated from all sites is Dm=335.7°, Im=43.1°, K=11, α95=12.3 and N=15. The corresponding palaeopole is Plat=66.4°, Plong=205.8°, K=13, and A95=11.1. This pole is not significantly different from North American Jurassic–Cretaceous poles. This suggests that no major latitudinal displacements and deformation have occurred since the Jurassic, in contrast to some previously proposed tectonic models. 相似文献

The Early Cretaceous may be considered a key period for understanding the evolution of the Earth’s magnetic field. Some still
unsolved problems are related to the mode of paleosecular variation (PSV) of the Earth’s magnetic field before and during
the Cretaceous Normal Superchron. We report here a detailed rock-magnetic, paleomagnetic and paleointensity investigation
from 28 lava flows (331 standard paleomagnetic cores) collected in the Argentinean part of the Parana Flood Basalts (Formation
Posadas) in order to contribute to the study of PSV during the early Cretaceous and to obtain precise Cretaceous paleomagnetic
pole positions for stable South America. The average paleofield direction is precisely determined from 26 sites, which show
small within-site dispersion and high directional stability. Five sites show evidences for the self-reversal of thermoremanent
magnetization. 23 sites yielded normal polarity magnetization and only 3 are reversely magnetized. Moving windows averages
were used to analyze the sequential variation of virtual geomagnetic pole’s (VGP) axial positions. Interestingly, the axial
average VGP path traces an almost complete cycle around the geographical pole and passes near the location of all previously
published Paraná Magmatic Province poles. Both paleomagnetic poles and average VGP paths are significantly different from
the pole position suggested by fixed hotspot reconstructions, which may be due to true polar wander or the hotspot motion
itself. Only 15 samples from 5 individual basaltic lava flows, yielded acceptable paleointensity estimates. The site mean
paleointensities range from 25.2 ± 2.2 to 44.0 ± 2.2 μT. The virtual dipole moments (VDMs) range from 4.8 to 9.9 × 1022 Am2. This correspond to a mean value of 7.7 ± 2.1 × 1022 Am2 which is 96% of the present day geomagnetic field strength. These intensities agree with the relatively high values already
reported for Early Cretaceous, which are consistent with some inferences from computer simulations previously published. 相似文献

The Dmanisi site has yielded human remains and lithic industry associated with Late Pliocene-early Pleistocene fauna. The site is composed of volcanogenic sediments overlying basaltic lava flows. The lithostratigraphic sequence comprises two basic depositional units: Unit A, overlying the basalt flows, and Unit B on top. A paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic study has been carried out on 106 specimens from Units A and B and the uppermost basalt flow. The lava and Unit A provide normal polarities, while reversed polarities and anomalous directions are observed in Unit B, the latter probably due to overlapping of a secondary and a primary reversed polarity component. The lower part of the section shows a clear correlation with the Olduvai subchron, and the upper levels could be as young as 1.07 Ma. As human remains were found both in units with normal and reversed polarity, different non-contemporaneous human occupations might have been possible. 相似文献

Laguna Melincué is a shallow lake located in Santa Fe Province, Argentina (33°41′27.8″S, 61°31′36.5″W). The catchment area is around 1495 km2 and it is located in the Pampean Plains. It was reduced to 678 km2 by the construction of the San Urbano channel in 1941 and reconditioned in 1977, which was built to avoid floods. The floods are related to some El Niño episodes, with high precipitation events. The lake has been previously studied from different approaches, mainly to understand hydrological and climatic variations, but more multidisciplinary studies are needed to understand its complex hydrological situation. Here we present the first paleomagnetic and rock magnetic studies made on a short sediment core collected from the lake in order to contribute to identifying paleoclimatic proxies and to present the first paleomagnetic results for the site. Rock magnetic analyses suggest that the well-preserved magnetic mineralogy is dominated by pseudo single-domain (titano)magnetite and/or maghemite. The results also indicate that a stable characteristic remanent magnetisation can be isolated and thus the directions of the geomagnetic field may be obtained, providing evidence for the use of this lake for paleomagnetic and paleoenvironmental studies. Changes in magnetic grain size and concentration of magnetic minerals suggest environmental variations and changes in the lake level, which are consistent with historical reports. The paleomagnetic results agree well with Cals3k.3 model for inclination and declination of the geomagnetic field except for the dry period probably due to the fact that the core was extracted near the shore. 相似文献

Twenty years after Tanaka and Kono's pioneering contribution (Tanaka and Kono, 1984), we give some new details on the effect of applied field strength during Thellier paleointensity experiments. Special attention is paid to the relation of magnitude of laboratory field and Coe's quality factors (Coe et al., 1978). Full thermoremanent magnetizations were imparted on natural samples containing low-Ti titanomagnetites of pseudo-single domain structure in a 40-μT magnetic field from 600?°C to room temperature. The samples were subjected to the routine Thellier procedure using a wide range of applied laboratory fields. Results indicate that values of laboratory fields may be accurately reproduced within 2% of standard error. The quality factors, however, decrease when the magnitude of ‘ancient’ field does not match to applied laboratory fields. To cite this article: J. Morales et al., C. R. Geoscience 338 (2006). 相似文献

In this work, we investigate the correlation between some magnetic parameters and the level of contamination by heavy metals in urban soils from Morelia city, western Mexico. The magnetic study was carried out on 98 urban soils samples belonging to distinct land uses. Most of analyzed samples contain ferrimagnetic minerals as the responsible for magnetization, most probably corresponding to the titanomagnetites/ titanomaghemites solid solutions. This is inferred from the susceptibility vs. temperature measurements and the isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) experiments. These measurements also indicate that most of samples are almost completely saturated before 300 mT. Additionally, the S-200 values (S-200 = IRM-200/ SIRM, where IRM-200= Back-field of 200 mT after magnetic saturation) are between 0.7 and 1.0, characteristic of low coercivity magnetic minerals. The averaged saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) curves can be used as an indicator of pollution level, as these curves show different saturation values according to the level of contamination by heavy metals: Cu, Ni, Cr and Sr. These associations of (titano)magnetite with heavy metals were observed by Scanning Electron Microscope revealing some complex aggregates rather than commonly detected spherules. 相似文献

We report the results of a rock magnetic and archeointensity study on pottery fragments recovered at the archaeological site of Puertas de Rolón, Capacha culture (Colima), that is considered one of the most important pre-Classic cultural developments of western Mesoamerica, Mexico. Standard rock magnetic experiments were carried out in order to investigate the reliability of the ancient field strength recovered from studied materials. Six out of the seven analyzed fragments gave reliable intensity determinations. The mean archeointensity value obtained in this study is 35.3 ± 3.4 μT. It is in good agreement with another contemporaneous Mesoamerican mean archeointensity of 34.3 ± 1.1 μT obtained for El Opeño. Statistically similar rock-magnetic parameters between ceramics from El Opeño and Puertas de Rolón potsherds appear to be related to clay-sources with similar geological settings and weathering processes. Alternatively, ancient trade or interexchange between western (Capacha Culture) and eastern Mesoamerica locations, as it has been proposed earlier, seem to be supported by results obtained in this study. 相似文献

The paleosecular variation (PSV) and polarity transitions are two major features of the Earth’s magnetic field. Both PSV and
reversal studies are limited when age of studied units is poorly constrained. This is a case of Central and western Mexico
volcanics. Although many studies have been devoted to these crucial problems and more than 200 paleomagnetic directions are
available for the last 5 Ma, only few sites were dated directly. This paper presents new paleomagnetic results from seventeen
independent cooling units in the Michoacán-Guanajuato Volcanic Field (MGVF) in western Mexico. Twelve sites are directly dated
by 40Ar/39Ar or K-Ar methods and span from 2.78 to 0.56 Ma. The characteristic paleodirections are successfully isolated for 15 lava
flows. The mean paleodirection (inclination I and declination D) obtained in this study is I = 28.8°, D = 354.9°, and Fisherian
statistical parameters are k = 28, α95 = 7.3°, N=15, which corresponds to the mean paleomagnetic pole position Plat = 83.9°, Plong = 321.6°, K = 34, A95 = 6.6°. The paleodirections obtained in present study compiled with those, previously reported from the MGVF, are practically
undistinguishable from the expected Plio-Quaternary paleodirections. The paleosecular variation is estimated through the study
of the scatter of the virtual geomagnetic poles giving SF = 15.9 with SU =21.0 and SL = 12.7 (upper and lower limits respectively). These values agree reasonably well with the recent statistical Models. The
oldest sites analyzed (the Santa Teresa and Cerro Alto) yield normal polarity magnetizations as expected for the cooling units
belonging to the Gauss geomagnetic Chron. The interesting feature of the record comes from lava flows dated at about 2.35
Ma with clearly defined normal directions. This may point out the possible existence of a normal polarity magnetization in
the Matuyama reversed Chron older than the Reunion and may be correlated to Halawa event interpreted as the Cryptochron C2r.2r-1.
Another important feature of the geomagnetic record obtained from the MGVF is the evidence of fully reversed geomagnetic field
within Bruhnes Chron, at about 0.56 Ma corresponding to the relative paleointensity minimum of global extent found in marine
sediments at about 590 ka. 相似文献
