Much information on the regional lithospheric structure may come from MTS data acquired by synchronous 2D arrays and processed with regard to the nonlocal response of a laterally inhomogeneous subsurface. We suggest to invert the nonlocal MT responses applying correlation of all surface horizontal and vertical components of the geomagnetic field recorded simultaneously at all stations. The inversion algorithm has been applied to 2004–2005 European observatory data of diurnal Sq variations for first five harmonics and yielded lateral conductivity patterns for different periods. The maps show spatial correlation between conductivity maxima and lithospheric thickness minima and, specifically, highlight the contours of the Pannonian basin, where lithosphere is as thin as ~50 km, from seismic data.  相似文献

Abstract— Stuart H. Perry (1874–1957), an influential Michigan newspaper editor and publisher and a vice president of the Associated Press, developed a passionate interest in collecting and studying meteorites in the 1920s and 1930s. Firmly believing that meteorites belong in great museums where they can be properly investigated, he generously donated his meteorites to various museums after he finished his own study of them. He had a sincere interest in the National Collection of Meteorites, and donated 192 specimens–‐mostly irons–‐to the U.S. National Museum; these constituted some of the most important meteorites in its collection, and moved iron meteorites to center stage, a position still occupied. By applying current metallographic methods to the study of iron meteorites, Perry directed scientists to a powerful new research tool, which led to major advances in our understanding of meteoritic irons and helped give rise to a new field within planetary sciences. His groundbreaking monograph The metallography of meteoric iron served as a standard reference collection of metallographic photomicrographs of iron meteorites for more than 30 years. It remained an insightful and useful work on the structure of meteoritic iron until improved binary and ternary phase diagrams in the Fe‐Ni(‐P) system allowed a more detailed treatment of the formation of iron meteorites. Perry received many honors for his work, and held office in the Meteoritical Society, serving as a councilor from 1941–1950, and as a vice president from 1950–1957.  相似文献

We present previously unpublished circular polarization (cp) measurements at 4.8 and 8.0 GHz made with the University of Michigan 26-meter prime focus telescope during 1978–1984 and results of a new observational program during the past two years. Based on the preliminary analysis of our recent data, eight sources were detected at 4.8 GHz with average degrees of cp ranging from ≤ 0.1% to ≥ 1%.The results are compared with observations at other frequencies and with linear polarization and total flux density variability in the sources. The behavior of the cp variability observed to date is consistent with stochastic variations produced by mode conversion in transient, opaque emitting regions in the sources. The observed sign changes observed between different epochs and different frequencies are not consistent with the hypothesis that sources maintain a fixed handedness of cp.  相似文献

The study is devoted to the possibilities of MTS in the case of arbitrary medium and electromagnetic-field inhomogeneity. It has been shown that the local tensor impedance and admittance ratios between the field components are usually differential. Useful information about the study region, with complex behavior of sounding curves, can be obtained by unconventional processing techniques, with the help of nonlocal medium response functions (component matching). Experiments can be considerably more cost-effective if we divide the study area into several small zones of synchronous observations and perform independent experiments in each of them at different time.  相似文献

Inversion of laterally heterogeneous MT responses collected by a dense synchronous 2D array allows a new approach to estimating electrical anisotropy. The procedure includes solving an overdetermined equation system, assuming distant-dependent anisotropy in a smooth approximation. Inversion is performed using an effective conductivity tensor which approximates some limited domain of the survey polygon. The algorithm for simulating 2D array MT responses with the effective conductivity tensor approach implies correlation of surface components of the EM field measured simultaneously at all stations within the chosen domain of the survey polygon. The suggested technique of data acquisition and processing ensures reconstruction of the full conductivity tensor from laterally variable components of the EM field.  相似文献

It has been suggested that regional array MTS data be processed with an algorithm based on the nonlocal response of laterally heterogeneous subsurface to an arbitrary electromagnetic excitation. The algorithm is tested with synthetic models which show that the inversion quality can be improved by accumulation of information through repeated measurements, at either changing or fixed array configurations. Besides the array configuration, the inversion quality depends on the selected size of the survey area. The choice of the area size defines the inversion conditions in terms of choice between the magnetic and electric mode for correlation of electromagnetic potentials. The algorithm has been applied to data acquired during the BEAR Project in the Fennoscandian shield. Preliminary results indicate a spatial correlation between conductivity minimums and Moho depth maximums. The apparent resistivity maps obtained with the suggested algorithm highlight the boundaries between the Lapland–Kola, Karelia, and Svecofennia tectonic provinces.  相似文献

Magnetotelluric (MT) sounding measurements are conducted, as a rule, along a single profile or mutiple profiles, and data are interpreted using 1D and 2D earth models. In a real situation, the earth is three-dimensional, and the primary field may vary laterally. This implies that 1D and 2D inversions of MT data contain some error, up to the appearance of false structures. In this study, analytical methods are used to obtain expressions for the effect of small deviations of the earth and the primary field from the Tikhonov–Cagniard model on the impedance and tipper tensor components (sensitivity functions which determining the size of the zone near the sounding point within which the perturbations affect the impedance and tipper at this point).  相似文献

Phase change of dielectric magnesiowüstite in the lower mantle may leave signatures in geomagnetic records of the globally distributed array of observatories. We investigate theoretically which may be the contribution of magnesiowüstite metallization to geomagnetic data and how the variations of magnetic susceptibility associated with this phase change may influence the Earth's field. The modeling is performed using spherical harmonic analysis (SHA) of mantle electromagnetic (EM) responses in observatory geomagnetic data at periods of decades, 11 years, 1 year, and 27 days. The existence of a lower mantle conductor is checked against monthly means of real observatory records from 1920 through 2009 obtained by preliminary processing.  相似文献
