We cross-correlate the sample of type Ia supernovae from Riess A. G. et al. with the SDSS DR2 photometric galaxy catalogue. In contrast to recent work, we find no detectable correlation between supernova magnitude and galaxy overdensity on scales ranging between 1 and 10 arcmin. Our results are in accord with theoretical expectations for gravitational lensing of supernovae by large-scale structure. Future supernova surveys such as SNAP will be capable of detecting unambiguously the predicted lensing signal.  相似文献

Classifying levels of protection in Marine Protected Areas   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are an important tool for the conservation of marine species and ecosystems. Yet despite the significant differences between marine and terrestrial systems in terms of their critical ecological processes, stresses, and relationships with cultural systems, methods used to characterize levels of protection for biological diversity in MPAs are all derived from schemes developed for terrestrial systems. A new system designed to classify levels of protection in MPAs is proposed, based on criteria specifically relevant to marine systems. MPAs are characterized by each of the seven criteria: designated use, quality of natural character, extent of protection throughout the year, extent of zoning into sub-areas for multiple uses, public access, extraction of resources, and size with respect to supporting critical ecological processes. Five levels of protection are defined, labeled I-V: Wilderness Management Area (Level I), Research Management Area, Ecological Management Area, Human Recreation Management Area, and Sustainable Resource Management Area (V). A level is assigned to an MPA based on the level that matches the largest number of categories across all seven criteria. The uses and benefits of this system of classification relative to existing systems are discussed and examples of its application are illustrated using data on 83 MPAs in California (USA) and 10 globally.  相似文献

Bromide was the subject of detailed investigation in the Mandovi-Zuari river system and information was compiled on its spatial and temporal distribution. A simple mixture relation of Carpenter et al. was applied and seawater percentage and bromide concentrations were computed. The variation of bromide with chlorinity was linear indicating the purely conservative character of bromide and its seawater origin. Seawater ranged between 1 and 3% in monsoon, 76 and 91% in post-monsoon and 92 and 97% in pre-monsoon in the Mandovi-Zuari river system. As the bromide concentration varied linearly with chlorinity both longitudinally and depthwise, it followed that bromide exhibited a simple distribution pattern established by conservative mixing.  相似文献

Behaviour of industrially added boron in the well mixed Ambika river estuary of South Gujarat, India has been studied along with that of calcium and magnesium. The ratios of Ca : Cl and Mg : Cl at varying chlorinities were always within the normal ranges found in river water at one end and seawater at the other end. B : Cl exceeded the river water end limit at the ebb tide at an upstream station. Percentage addition or removal of boron, calcium and magnesium was calculated using the concept of the theoretical dilution line. The external input raised the boron concentration by 263% in the vicinity of the industrial discharge. A correlation coefficient of ?0·82 between chlorinity and percentage addition or removal of boron supports the theory of boron incorporation in sediments in amounts proportional to salinity. Inverse relationship between percentage addition or removal of boron and suspended solids was observed. Behaviour of calcium and magnesium was in line with the replacement of Ca2+ ions occupying the majority of ion-exchange sites in riverine clays by Mg2+, Na+ and K+ during their first encounter with seawater.  相似文献

Solute transport in rivers with transient storage and lateral inflow has been studied by Transient Storage Model (TSM). Analytical solution of the TSM is obtained by means of Laplace transform. In order to illustrate the use of present analytical solution, physical transport parameters are estimated for the observational data of Uvas Creek tracer experiment. Analytical concentration-time breakthrough curves are found to be in good agreement with the observed concentration-time breakthrough curves. A sensitivity analysis has been performed in order to identify the most critical parameter for predicting concentration. It has been found that lateral inflow rate is the most sensitive and the ratio of cross-sectional areas is the least sensitive parameter. A hypothetical situation has been considered to study the effects of background concentrations, lateral inflow concentration and its rate. The analytical solutions show that the solute concentration gets diluted or concentrated due to lateral inflow. Physical mechanisms of the problems are well reproduced by the present analytical solutions and these results can be used for analysis of tracer experiments.  相似文献

The Poplar Island Dredged Material Placement Site in Talbot County, Maryland is proposed to be used for the restoration of Poplar Island and for the creation of desirable habitats lost through erosion of Poplar Island by the beneficial use of clean and uncontaminated dredged material from the Chesapeake Bay approach channels to the Port of Baltimore. The Poplar Island baseline environmental assessment studies included among others, seasonal water quality, benthic community, and benthic tissue contaminants, that were carried out by the Maryland Department of the Environment, in cooperation with the University of Maryland, from September 1995 to July 1996. The purpose of the study was to document the present-day levels of nutrients, trace metals, and organic contaminants in the area to establish a baseline against which subsequent levels and biological responses may be compared. The overall results of the study indicate that Poplar Island and vicinity areas are non-impacted in terms of water quality and benthic tissue contamination. The nutrient levels in the water column were below average for this region of Chesapeake Bay, while the trace metals and organic contamination in the benthic tissues were comparable to other sites within Chesapeake Bay that are not impacted by direct inputs. Concentrations were equivalent or lower than those found at Hart-Miller Island, a disposal facility outside Baltimore Harbor, Maryland containing dredged material.  相似文献
