Seven supracratonic, Proterozoic basins, occupying more than a fifth of the Precambrian exposures in the Indian Peninsula, comprise the Purana basins. A comprehensive review of the current status of knowledge of these voluminous orthoquartzite-carbonate-shale suites in the context of their contemporary lithostratigraphy, depositional environments and structural disposition is presented. Stromatolite biostratigraphy and available geochronological data are compared, to discern their age limits. These basins contain perhaps one of the most elaborate records of Middle to Late Proterozoic (Riphean-Vendian) sedimentation preserved in an unmetamorphosed and only slightly deformed state. Further sedimentological and structural studies could lead to a better understanding of the Proterozoic craton-margin processes. Their close association with the Middle Proterozoic Mobile Belt of peninsular India is that of two contrasting tectonic regimes, contemporaneously adjoining each other. The existing lithostratigraphic classifications of many of these sequences may not stand the test of process - response considerations as demonstrated by the recent revisions in the stratigraphy of the Cuddapah and Bhima basins. The prolific stromatolitic, micro-organic and trace-fossil communities preserved in them require much more detailed, but cautious study, and may yield information on the Riphean-Vendian biota. However, these studies must be undertaken in association with elaborate geochronological determinations which are sparse at present. Inadequacy of the existing knowledge of these basins is highlighted, with the view of inviting the attention of the geological community to these unique basins from peninsular India. 相似文献
Closed form analytical expressions of stresses and displacements at any field point due to a very long dip-slip fault of finite
width buried in a homogeneous, isotropic elastic half-space, are presented. Airy stress function is used to derive the expressions
of stresses and displacements which depend on the dip angle and depth of the upper edge of the fault. The effect of dip angle
and depth of the upper edge of the fault on stresses and displacements is studied numerically and the results obtained are
presented graphically. Contour maps for stresses and displacements are also presented. The results of Rani and Singh (1992b)
and Freund and Barnett (1976) have been reproduced. 相似文献
Rayleigh’s method of approximation is employed to find out the reflection and transmission coefficients due to an incident
plane SH wave at a corrugated interface between a laterally and vertically inhomogeneous anisotropic elastic solid half-space
and a laterally and vertically inhomogeneous isotropic visco-elastic solid half-space. The lateral and vertical inhomogeneities
are described by the exponential variations of elastic parameters. The formulae of reflection and transmission coefficients
are derived in closed form for the first-order approximation of the corrugation. The effects of the corrugation of the interface,
the inhomogeneity, the anisotropy, the visco-elasticity and the frequency of the incident wave on these coefficients are studied
analytically and numerically for a specific model containing a periodic interface. The results of earlier workers have been
reduced as particular cases from the present formulation. 相似文献
The Indonesian throughflow (ITF) transports a significant amount of warm freshwater from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean, making it critical to the global climate system. This study examines decadal ITF variations using ocean reanalysis data as well as climate model simulations from the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). While the observed annual cycle of ITF transport is known to be correlated with the annual cycle of sea surface height (SSH) difference between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, ocean reanalysis data (1959–2015) show that the Pacific Ocean SSH variability controls more than 85% of ITF variation on decadal timescales. In contrast, the Indian Ocean SSH variability contributes less than 15%. While those observed contributions are mostly reproduced in the CMIP5 historical simulations, an analysis of future climate projections shows a 25–30% increase in the Indian Ocean SSH variability to decadal ITF variations and a corresponding decrease in the Pacific contribution. These projected changes in the Indian Ocean SSH variability are associated with a 23% increase in the amplitudes of negative zonal wind stress anomalies over the equatorial Indian Ocean, along with a 12º eastward shift in the center of action in these anomalies. This combined effect of the increased amplitude and eastward shift in the zonal wind stress increases the SSHA variance over the Indian Ocean, increasing its contribution to the ITF variation. The decadal ITF changes discussed in this study will be crucial in understanding the future global climate variability, strongly coupled to Indo-Pacific interactions.
We report the in-orbit performance of Scanning Sky Monitor (SSM) onboard AstroSat. The SSM operates in the energy range 2.5 to 10 keV and scans the sky to detect and locate transient X-ray sources. This information of any interesting phenomenon in the X-ray sky as observed by SSM is provided to the astronomical community for follow-up observations. Following the launch of AstroSat on 28th September, 2015, SSM was commissioned on October 12th, 2015. The first power ON of the instrument was with the standard X-ray source, Crab in the field-of-view. The first orbit data revealed the basic expected performance of one of the detectors of SSM, SSM1. Following this in the subsequent orbits, the other detectors were also powered ON to find them perform in good health. Quick checks of the data from the first few orbits revealed that the instrument performed with the expected angular resolution of 12’ \(\times \) 2.5\(^\circ \) and effective area in the energy range of interest. This paper discusses the instrument aspects along with few on-board results immediately after power ON. 相似文献
Many mud volcanoes are distributed along the tectonic sutures in southern Taiwan and can be divided into five zones based on their relative positions in different tectonic domains. Most active mud volcanoes are exhaling methane-dominated gases. Nevertheless, some gases show unusual carbon dioxide-dominated and/or nitrogen-excess compositions. This implies that there are multiple sources for the gas compositions of mud volcanoes in Taiwan. For better understanding the total amount of exhalation gases and its flux, the gas flow and compositions were continuously measured in the interval of two minutes at Chung-lun (CL) bubbling mud pool for a few months. The major compositions of gases exhaling from this site were 75~90% of CO2 and 5~12% of CH4. The amount of gases exhaling from the mud pool can be estimated to be about 1.4 ton/year for CH4 and 28 ton/year for CO2, respectively. The preliminary results of exhaling gas flux from the major vents of representative active mud volcanoes, yielded an estimated total CH4 output of the mud volcanoes in Taiwan of ca. 29 ton/year during quiescent period. 相似文献
We have analyzed the data for more than 12900 coronal mass ejections (CMEs) which were obtained by SOHO/LASCO during the period of 1996-2007. The online CME catalogue contains all major CMEs detected by LASCO C2 and C3 coronagraphs. Basically we determine the CME speeds from the linear and quadratic fits to the height-time measurements. It is found that linear (constant speed) fit is preferable for 90% of the CMEs. The distribution of speeds of CMEs in solar cycle 23 is presented along with those obtained by others. As expected, the speeds decrease in the decay phase of the cycle 23. There is an unusual drop in speed in the year 2001 and an abnormal increase in speed in the year 2003 due to the high concentration of CMEs, X-class soft X-ray flares, solar energetic particle (SEP) events and interplanetary shocks observed during October-November period called Halloween events. 相似文献
