Mud bank formation during the southwest monsoon along the southwest coast of India remains an enigma to the researchers and coastal community in spite of several earlier studies. The present study attempts to unravel the mystery through a high-frequency, season-long time-series observation at Alappuzha, located at the southern part of the west coast of India, a region of frequent occurrence of mud bank. Using 7-month-long weekly time-series observation, we identified strong winds and high waves associated with onset of the southwest monsoon and subsequent three episodic atmospheric low-pressure events (LPEs).With the help of in situ time-series data, we show that the strong winds and high waves associated with southwest monsoon pre-conditions the near shore bottom sediment to bring it into suspension. The high amplitude waves associated with the southwest monsoon, while propagating from the deep water to shallow water region, interact with the bottom initiating bottom-sediment movement and its suspension due to wave refraction and shoaling. The sporadic occurrence of the atmospheric LPEs enhances the process of suspension of bottom sediment in the near shore region leading to the formation of fluid mud. Simulations with a cohesive sediment transport model yielded realistic estimates of sediment transport, in the presence of an onshore current, a pre-requisite for transporting the fluid mud toward the coast. The prevailing onshore upwelling current during the southwest monsoon provides the favorable pre-requisite conditions for transporting the fluid mud through depression channel network towards the coast. Once sufficient quantity and thickness of fluid mud is accumulated in the near shore region, it acts as a wave damper for subsequent high monsoon waves, as indicated by the time-series wave data, leading to the formation of tranquil mud bank region. Depression channel networks extending from the shelf to the coast off Alappuzha, Kochi, Ponnani, Beypore, and Ullal were found in the bathymetric charts, thus explaining why mud banks occur only at few locations in spite of the prevalence of similar monsoon conditions. 相似文献

A PC-based interactive software has been developed and presented here for validating geophysical data retrieved from satellite
mounted sensors operating in visible, infrared and microwave frequencies. The program, coded in Visual Basic, is user interactive
and runs on Windows-98 or higher platforms. The system prepares the database on a pre-selected Microsoft platform to enhance
processing efficiency. Sub-setting option is also provided to reduce the processing time. Data retrieved from ‘Multi-channel
Scanning Microwave Radiometer (MSMR) onboard the Indian satellites Oceansat-1 during 1999–2001 were validated using this software
as a case study. The program has several added advantages over the conventional method of validation that involves strenuous
efforts to incorporate subroutines to meet every minute requirement. Satellite-sea truth relationships on various space-time
window combinations are determined and exhibited in matrix form to visualize the nature of correlation. User has the option
to visualize the satellite-sea truth relationship through graphical representations before selecting optimum relationship
for prediction. 相似文献

It is well accepted that the parent distribution for individual ocean wave heights follows the Weibull model. However this
model does not simulate significant wave height which is the average of the highest one-third of some ‘n’ (n- varies) wave heights in a wave record. It is now proposed to redefine significant wave height as average of the highest one-third
of a constant number (n-constant, say,n = 100) of consecutive individual wave heights. The Weibull model is suggested for simulating redefined significant wave height
distribution by the method of characteristic function. An empirical support of 100.00% is established by Χ2-test at 0.05 level of significance for 3 sets of data at 0900, 1200 and 1500 hrs at Valiathura, Kerala coast. Parametric
relations have been derived for the redefined significant wave height parameters such as mean, maximum one-third average,
extreme wave heights, return periods of an extreme wave height and the probability of realising an extreme wave height in
a time less than the designated return period. 相似文献

We used field and model wave data to investigate that zero crossing and average wave period distribution follow Gamma distribution.
Since Gamma CDF is an infinite power series, further mathematical treatment is difficult. Hence its shape parameter is approximated
to the nearest integer to arrive at Erlang distribution. An expression is derived from Erlang distribution to estimate various
mean wave periods and significant wave period and validated by relative root mean square (RRMS) error criteria. It is shown
by mathematical logic that the significant wave period distribution follows Erlang (or Gamma) distribution and is validated.
The average of one-third and one-tenth highest wave periods (T
s
) estimated from Erlang distribution are in accordance with the values computed from recorded buoy and numerical coastal wave
model wave period data. The predicted T
s
values from coastal wave model wave period data underestimates the values from buoy wave period data. 相似文献

Biodiesel is a renewable alternative fuel that can be used as substitute for mineral diesel. The use of biodiesel in diesel engines reduces all of the exhaust emissions expect NOx. The higher temperature in the combustion chamber increases the NOx emissions. The recirculation of a small percentage of cooled exhaust gases into the combustion chamber through the intake manifold reduces the in‐cylinder temperature. Moreover, the cooling of exhaust gases before mixing with fresh air introduced to the engine does not affect its volumetric efficiency but it absorbs the heat of combustion. This leads to a reduction in NOx emissions and improves the engine brake thermal efficiency. This paper describes the investigation of the performance and emission characteristics of a biodiesel‐fueled, naturally aspirated, single cylinder diesel engine with cooled exhaust gas recirculation. 相似文献

Introduction Tropical region is endowed with a vast tract of diverse vegetation (Gentry 1992). Among different types of forests, the montane forests, due to their unique features including rich biodiversity andprominent ecological services, have always attracted biologists, bio-geographers, ecologists and forest managers (Doumenge et al. 1995). In India, montane forests covering 7.9 % of total forest area occur in the Himalayan, northeastern and southern parts of the country (Lal 1989). In s… 相似文献

Physical forcing plays a major role in determining biological processes in the ocean across the full spectrum of spatial and temporal scales. Variability of biological production in the Bay of Bengal (BoB) based on basin-scale and mesoscale physical processes is presented using hydrographic data collected during the peak summer monsoon in July–August, 2003. Three different and spatially varying physical processes were identified in the upper 300 m: (I) anticyclonic warm gyre offshore in the southern Bay; (II) a cyclonic eddy in the northern Bay; and (III) an upwelling region adjacent to the southern coast. In the warm gyre (>28.8 °C), the low salinity (33.5) surface waters contained low concentrations of nutrients. These warm surface waters extended below the euphotic zone, which resulted in an oligotrophic environment with low surface chlorophyll a (0.12 mg m−3), low surface primary production (2.55 mg C m−3 day−1) and low zooplankton biovolume (0.14 ml m−3). In the cyclonic eddy, the elevated isopycnals raised the nutricline upto the surface (NO3–N > 8.2 μM, PO4–P > 0.8 μM, SiO4–Si > 3.5 μM). Despite the system being highly eutrophic, response in the biological activity was low. In the upwelling zone, although the nutrient concentrations were lower compared to the cyclonic eddy, the surface phytoplankton biomass and production were high (Chl a – 0.25 mg m−3, PP – 9.23 mg C m−3 day−1), and mesozooplankton biovolume (1.12 ml m−3) was rich. Normally in oligotrophic, open ocean ecosystems, primary production is based on ‘regenerated’ nutrients, but during episodic events like eddies the ‘production’ switches over to ‘new production’. The switching over from ‘regenerated production’ to ‘new production’ in the open ocean (cyclonic eddy) and establishment of a new phytoplankton community will take longer than in the coastal system (upwelling). Despite the functioning of a cyclonic eddy and upwelling being divergent (transporting of nutrients from deeper waters to surface), the utilization of nutrients leading to enhanced biological production and its transfer to upper trophic levels in the upwelling region imply that the energy transfer from primary production to secondary production (mesozooplankton) is more efficient than in the cyclonic eddy of the open ocean. The results suggest that basin-scale and mesoscale processes influence the abundance and spatial heterogeneity of plankton populations across a wide spatial scale in the BoB. The multifaceted effects of these physical processes on primary productivity thus play a prominent role in structuring of zooplankton communities and could consecutively affect the recruitment of pelagic fisheries. 相似文献

The tsunami similar to the one that has occurred in December 26, 2004 (Boxing Day Tsunami) in the Indian Ocean is simulated using the expression derived from Modified Weibull Distribution (for maximum wave height simulation) for extreme wave height predictions. The tuning coefficient plays a significant role in estimating the tsunami heights at various stages. It follows well defined mathematical laws at different stages. It is time dependent in the first three stages and depth dependent in the last two stages. The beach run-up heights estimated by the expression derived from the work-energy relation are comparable with observed values with reasonable accuracy. 相似文献

Information on the distribution of dissolved Folin phenol active substances (FPAS) such as tannin and lignin in the seawater along the west coast of India is provided. Notable amounts of FPAS (surface concentrations: 80 g/l to 147 g/l and bottom concentrations: 80 g/l to 116 g/l) were detected in the seawater along the coast. The distribution pattern brings about a general depth-wise decrease. A seaward decrease was observed in the southern stations whereas reverse was the case in northern stations. A significant negative correlation was observed between FPAS concentration and dissolved oxygen in sub-surface samples. The appreciable amounts of FPAS detected in the coastal waters indicate the presence of organic matter principally originating from terrestrial (upland and coastal marsh) ecosystems in the marine environment. In this context, they may be used as tracers to determine the fate of coastalborn dissolved organic matter in the ocean and to determine directly the relationship between allochthonous and autochthonous organic matter. 相似文献
