For the ammonia-oxidizing bacterium Nitrosomonas europaea, grown autotrophically using semicontinuous culturing, average biomass was depleted in 13C relative to CO2 dissolved in the medium by ca. 20‰ and the total-lipid extract was depleted in 13C relative to biomass by 3.7‰. The n-alkyl lipids (weighted average of fatty acids) and isoprenoid lipids (weighted average of hopanoids) were both depleted in 13C relative to biomass by about 9‰. The large depletion in the isoprenoid lipids seems to indicate that isotopic fractionations associated with the biosynthesis of methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) affected at least two carbon positions in each isoprene unit. Among the fatty acids, trans-9-hexadecenoic acid was most depleted (13.0‰ relative to biomass), followed by cis-9- hexadecenoic acid (9.6‰) and hexadecanoic acid (6.9‰). Isotopic relationships between the three acids suggest that significant isotope effects were associated with the desaturation and cis to trans isomerization of fatty acids. Given these observations, hopanoids produced by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria growing in natural waters are likely to be depleted in 13C by 26–30‰ relative to dissolved CO2. Since CO2 at aquatic oxyclines is often depleted in 13C, the range of δ values expected for hopanoids is ca. −34‰ to −55‰. The δ values of geohopanoids observed in numerous studies and attributed to unspecified chemoautotrophs fall within this range.  相似文献

Scanning measurements by a single wavelength lidar (1.06 m) were made downwind of the Pt. Sur rock, an isolated hill (height 110 m) along the California coast. Turbulent eddies (approximate diameter 50 m) were observed detaching from a stationary aerosol feature above the rock and moving downwind. Under conditions with a high Froude number [1.8], the Strouhal number [0.22] of vortex shedding was close to that observed in tank experiments with a Reynolds number of 200.  相似文献

We recalculate the diffuse flux of high-energy neutrinos produced by gamma-ray bursts in the relativistic fireball model. Although we confirm that the average single burst produces only approximately 10-2 high-energy neutrino events in a detector with a 1 km2 effective area, i.e., about 10 events yr-1, we show that the observed rate is dominated by burst-to-burst fluctuations that are very large. We find event rates that are expected to be larger by 1 order of magnitude, likely more, which are dominated by a few very bright bursts. This greatly simplifies their detection.  相似文献

Although the fundamental traffic diagram provides the characteristics of a typical road traffic speed–flow relationship, little consideration has been given to the impact of adverse weather conditions on the relationship and the subsequent impact on local speed–flow. For the first time, this study uses precipitation radar along with a state-of-the art traffic information system to ascertain the relationship between speed–flow and precipitation on a UK transport corridor at the local (junction to junction) scale. It is evident that precipitation causes a significant reduction in speed and maximum flow on many links of the corridor as well as a downward reduction in the overall speed-flow relationship. With increased instances of heavy precipitation predicted in the UK as a result of climate change, these findings highlight the subsequent impact on journey travel times and associated economic costs.  相似文献

A collaborative sampling cruise off the central California coast was conducted to evaluate contaminant transport pathways along and across the shelf in the spring of 2002. The area has a complex current structure and net transport routes are not known for sure. Sediment characteristics, and organic and trace metal contaminants were analyzed in sediments taken from locations near shore, out to the heads of several canyons. Relative to the continental shelf and Pioneer Canyon stations, DDT was found at higher concentrations in Ascension and Monterey Canyons. Monterey Bay still receives DDT from terrestrial runoff and may be the source of DDT found in Ascension Canyon. DDT concentrations in Monterey Bay biota indicate bioaccumulation is occurring at depth due to continuing input from the shore. Effects on the deep ocean benthic community is unknown.  相似文献

Critical swimming speed was determined for the Atlantic silverside (Menidia menidia) at several time and velocity increments. Fish were tested at time increments (Δt) of 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, and 60 minutes at a velocity increment (ΔV) of 0.5 body lengths s?1 (BL s?1). Tail beat frequency increased linearly with velocity. Critical swimming speed decreased from 9.7 BL s?1 at a Δt of 2 min to 8.5 BL s?1 at a Δt of 30 min and 45 min, followed by an increase to 9.25 BL s?1 at a Δt of 60 min.  相似文献
