A rapid thin-layer chromatographic technique for estimating the relative concentration of crude oil in sediments has been developed. The limit of detection on the chromatogram is 2 μg of Empire Mix or Saudi Arabian crude oil. The technique has been tested on 335 sediment samples collected from 67 stations in the Gulf of Mexico and has been utilized in assessing the location of oil entering the sediments from the Argo Merchant spill incident. 相似文献

Equations of motion, referred to as full body models, are developed to describe the dynamics of rigid bodies acting under
their mutual gravitational potential. Continuous equations of motion and discrete equations of motion are derived using Hamilton’s
principle. These equations are expressed in an inertial frame and in relative coordinates. The discrete equations of motion,
referred to as a Lie group variational integrator, provide a geometrically exact and numerically efficient computational method
for simulating full body dynamics in orbital mechanics; they are symplectic and momentum preserving, and they exhibit good
energy behavior for exponentially long time periods. They are also efficient in only requiring a single evaluation of the
gravity forces and moments per time step. The Lie group variational integrator also preserves the group structure without
the use of local charts, reprojection, or constraints. Computational results are given for the dynamics of two rigid dumbbell
bodies acting under their mutual gravity; these computational results demonstrate the superiority of the Lie group variational
integrator compared with integrators that are not symplectic or do not preserve the Lie group structure. 相似文献

The tube-fed pāhoehoe lava flows covering much of the northeast flank of Kīlauea Volcano are named the 'Ailā'au flows. Their
eruption age, based on published and six new radiocarbon dates, is approximately AD 1445. The flows have distinctive paleomagnetic
directions with steep inclinations (40°–50°) and easterly declinations (0°–10°E). The lava was transported ∼40 km from the
vent to the coast in long, large-diameter lava tubes; the longest tube (Kazumura Cave) reaches from near the summit to within
several kilometers of the coast near Kaloli Point. The estimated volume of the 'Ailā'au flow field is 5.2±0.8 km3, and the eruption that formed it probably lasted for approximately 50 years. Summit overflows from Kīlauea may have been
nearly continuous between approximately AD 1290 and 1470, during which time a series of shields formed at and around the summit.
The 'Ailā'au shield was either the youngest or the next to youngest in this series of shields. Site-mean paleomagnetic directions
for lava flows underlying the 'Ailā'au flows form only six groups. These older pāhoehoe flows range in age from 2750 to <18,000
BP, and the region was inundated by lava flows only three times in the past 5000 years. The known intervals between eruptive
events average ∼1600 years and range from ∼1250 years to >2200 years. Lava flows from most of these summit eruptions also
reached the coast, but none appears as extensive as the 'Ailā'au flow field. The chemistry of the melts erupted during each
of these summit overflow events is remarkably similar, averaging approximately 6.3 wt.% MgO near the coast and 6.8 wt.% MgO
near the summit. The present-day caldera probably formed more recently than the eruption that formed the 'Ailā'au flows (estimated
termination ca. AD 1470). The earliest explosive eruptions that formed the Keanakāko'i Ash, which is stratigraphically above
the 'Ailā'au flows, cannot be older than this age.

Abstract Laboratory experiments on the decay (spin-up) of fluid motion on the β-plane are compared with theory. Under weakly dissipative conditions, some particles conserve potential vorticity during the entire decay. We also study the rectified mean flow which is produced by the lateral Reynolds Stress when a low frequency force is applied to the planetary fluid. The possible connection of effects with oceanic phenomena is briefly discussed. 相似文献

Abstract Numerical solutions of the axisymmetric flows during the relatively early phase of spin-up from rest of a stratified fluid in a cylinder are presented. Detailed results are given for a cylinder of aspect ratio of O(l) and for a minute Ekman number, showing axisymmetric spin-up for three values of the stratification parameter. As the stratification increases, the meridional circulation is confined to a region closer to the Ekman layers. An axisymmetric shear wave propagates radially inward from the sidewall, but, unlike the strictly vertical front for a homogeneous fluid, the interface which separates rotating from nonrotating fluid is bow-shaped. For a stratified fluid, the axial vorticity distribution is nonuniform both in the vertical and in the radial directions. With increasing stratification, diffusive vorticity production near the sidewall is more pronounced. Axisymmetric flows in the early phase of spin-up of a stratified fluid are controlled by both the inviscid dynamic effect and the viscous diffusion effect. At a location close to the Ekman layers, the inviscid effect outweighs the viscous effect, in much the same way as in a homogeneous fluid. However, at a location close to mid-depth, the viscous diffusion effect, enhanced by substantial flow gradients in that region, is dominant. This points to the necessity of including the direct effect of viscous diffusion in the interior in formulating an analytical model of stratified spin-up problems. 相似文献

Four techniques (pattern recognition, Fourier transformation, cross-correlation, and multiple linear regression) have been used to recognize nontectonic environmental factors affecting groundwater radon data collected by the Caltech automated geochemical network. Several factors, including air temperature, rainfall, water level, carbon dioxide concentration in the water, and barometric pressure, were found to correlate with radon level at some stations in the network. For example, approximately 60% of the variance in radon signal at one site studied (Pacoima) could be accounted for by nontectonic influences. However, it was not possible to correlate all the observed changes in radon concentration with nontectonic environmental variables. Some of the observed radon anomalies did appear to be related to either regional changes in tectonic strain or some individual earthquakes. A model is developed to account for spike-like increases in radon caused by carbon dioxide emission. 相似文献

We present an annually resolved reconstruction of spring-summer precipitation variability in East Anglia, UK (52–53°N, 0–2°E) for the period AD 900–2009. A continuous regional network of 723 living (AD 1590–2009) and historical (AD 781–1790) oak (Quercus sp.) ring-width series has been constructed and shown to display significant sensitivity to precipitation variability during the March-July season. The existence of a coherent common growth signal is demonstrated in oaks growing across East Anglia, containing evidence of near-decadal aperiodic variability in precipitation throughout the last millennium. Positive correlations are established between oak growth and precipitation variability across a large region of northwest Europe, although climate-growth relationships appear time transgressive with correlations significantly weakening during the early twentieth century. Examination of the relationship between oak growth, precipitation, and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), reveals no evidence that the NAO plays any significant role in the control of precipitation or tree growth in this region. Using Regional Curve Standardisation to preserve evidence of low-frequency growth variability in the East Anglian oak chronology, we produce a millennial length reconstruction that is capable of explaining 32–35% of annual-to-decadal regional-scale precipitation variance during 1901–2009. The full length reconstruction indicates statistically significant anomalous dry conditions during AD 900–1100 and circa-1800. An apparent prolonged wetter phase is estimated for the twelfth and thirteen centuries, whilst precipitation fluctuates between wetter and drier phases at near centennial timescales throughout the fourteenth to seventeenth centuries. Above average precipitation reconstructed for the twenty-first century is comparable with that reproduced for the 1600s. The main estimated wet and dry phases reconstructed here appear largely coherent with an independent tree-ring reconstruction for southern-central England. 相似文献
