A lacustrine carbonate sequence from Hawes Water, Lancashire, UK, has been studied using stable isotopic, lithological, pollen and mineral magnetic analysis. The data reveal four abrupt climatic oscillations in the Late‐glacial Interstadial leading up to the onset of the Loch Lomond Stadial. The data also point to climatic warming relatively early within the stadial, ca. 12 500 GRIP yr, prior to the onset of the Holocene. The oxygen isotope record is taken as a signature of climate forcing against which the response of the lake‐system can be monitored. By adopting this approach it is revealed that the response of the biological system to the rapid climatic oscillations is non‐linear and primarily a function of the antecedent conditions. A significant end‐Devensian isotopic excursion (A) is matched by only minor changes in the cold‐adapted floras and faunas. During the warmer interstadial, the response of the biological ecosystem (events B–D) is clearly influenced by thresholds: major changes in the catchment vegetation associated with relatively minor oscillations in the isotopic signature. M?ller's assumptions for the carbon dioxide-water vapor overlap region, which lead to the construction of his radiation chart, are
reinvestigated in the light of modern theory. A new radiation chart, taking into account the carbon dioxide-water vapor overlap,
is constructed using water vapor and carbon dioxide absorption data as furnished byM?ller andElsasser respectively. The results of the radiative fluxes computed from the new chart are compared with equivalent results using

On propose alors un nouvel abaque qui tient compte de la présence simultanée du dioxyde de carbone et de la vapeur d'eau dans la même région spectrale. Cet abaque s'appuie sur les valeurs données parM?ller et parElsasser, valeurs valables pour ces deux gaz. On compare le résultat de calculs effectués avec ce nouvel abaque à des mesures et à des valeurs théoriques ces dernières étant basées tant sur les travaux originaux deM?ller que sur l'abaque amélioré deElsasser.

Banded iron formations (BIF) are prominent in sediments older than 2 Ga. However, little is known about the absolute abundance of BIF in Archean and Early Proterozoic sediments, and the source of the Fe is still somewhat uncertain. Also unknown is the role that Fe may have played in the maintenance of low oxygen pressures in the Archean and Early Proterozoic atmosphere. An analysis of the chemical composition of Precambrian rocks provides some insight into the role of Fe in Precambrian geochemical cycles. The Fe content of igneous rocks is well correlated with their Ti content. Plots of Fe vs. Ti in Precambrian sandstones and graywackes fall very close to the igneous rock trend. Plots of Fe vs. Ti in Precambrian shales also follow this trend but show a definite scatter toward an excess of Fe. Phanerozoic shales and sandstones lie essentially on the igneous rock trend and show surprisingly little scatter. Mn/Ti relations show a stronger indication of Precambrian Mn loss, perhaps due to weathering under a less oxidizing early atmosphere. These data show that Fe was neither substantially added to nor significantly redistributed in Archean and early Proterozoic sediments. Enough hydrothermal Fe was added to these sediments to increase the average Fe content of shales by at most a factor of 2. This enrichment would probably not have greatly affected the near-surface redox cycle or atmospheric oxygen levels. Continued redistribution of Fe and mixing with weathered igneous rocks during the recycling of Precambrian sediments account for the excellent correlation of Fe with Ti in Phanerozoic shales and for the similarity between their Fe/Ti ratio and that of igneous rocks. 相似文献

Two-dimensional power spectra of solar five-minute oscillations display prominent ridge structures in (k, ω) space, where k is the horizontal wavenumber and ω is the temporal frequency. The positions of these ridges in k and ω can be used to probe temperature and velocity structures in the subphotosphere. We have been carrying out a continuing program of observations of five-minute oscillations with the diode array instrument on the vacuum tower telescope at Sacramento Peak Observatory (SPO). We have sought to establish whether power spectra taken on separate days show shifts in ridge locations; these may arise from different velocity and temperature patterns having been brought into our sampling region by solar rotation. Power spectra have been obtained for six days of observations of Doppler velocities using the Mgi λ5173 and Fei λ5434 spectral lines. Each data set covers 8 to 11 hr in time and samples a region 256″ × 1024″ in spatial extent, with a spatial resolution of 2″ and temporal sampling of 65 s. We have detected shifts in ridge locations between certain data sets which are statistically significant. The character of these displacements when analyzed in terms of eastward and westward propagating waves implies that changes have occurred in both temperature and horizontal velocity fields underlying our observing window. We estimate the magnitude of the velocity changes to be on the order of 100 m s-1; we may be detecting the effects of large-scale convection akin to giant cells. 相似文献

Fresh mid-ocean ridge basalt of varying crystallinity has been powdered and reacted with seawater and an artificial Na-K-Ca-Cl solution at 200–500°C and 500–1000 bar in sealed gold capsules. Water/rock mass ratios of 1–3 were used and durations ranged from 2 to 20 months.These time periods were sufficient for most elements to approach a steady-state concentration in solution which was determined by equilibrium with alteration minerals (Mg, SiO2, SO4), by rate of formation of these minerals (Na, Ca), or by depletion from the rock (K, B, Ba). The resulting solutions closely resemble the brines from the basalt-seawater geothermal system at Reykjanes, Iceland. Mg was almost completely removed from seawater into the alteration products smectite, tremolite-actinolite, or talc. Sulfate also was removed to low concentrations, both by precipitation of anyhydrite and by reduction to sulfide. Net transfer of Na from seawater into solids occurred in most experiments by formation of sodic feldspar and possibly analcime. Sr was removed from seawater in some experiments but showed no change or a small gain in others. SiO2, Ca, K, Ba, B and CO2 were leached from basalt and enriched in solution. SiO2 concentrations were controlled by saturation with quartz at 300°C and above. The principal Ca-bearing phases which formed were anhydrite, the hydrated Ca-silicate truscottite, tremolite-actinolite, and possibly wairakite. No K-rich phases formed. For some minerals the crystallinity of the starting basalt affected the amount which formed.Removal of Mg from seawater into solid alteration products occurred rapidly and was balanced largely by leaching of Ca from basalt. Net transfer of Na from seawater into solids occurred more slowly and was balanced mainly by leaching of additional Ca from basalt.
