The brightest, or first-ranked, galaxies (BCGs) in rich clusters show a very small dispersion in luminosity, making them excellent standard candles. This small dispersion raises questions about the nature of BCGs. Are they simply the extremes of normal galaxies formed via a stochastic process, or do they belong to a special class of atypical objects? If they do, are all BCGs special, or do normal galaxies compete for the first rank? To answer these questions, we undertake a statistical study of BCG magnitudes using results from extreme value theory. Two-population models do better than one-population models. A simple scenario where a random boost in the magnitude of a fraction of bright normal galaxies forms a class of atypical galaxies best describes the observed distribution of BCG magnitudes.  相似文献

A point dilution test is commonly used in single-borehole tracer experiments designed to determine the Darcy velocity of a formation. This method is based on the concept that, in a borehole, a tracer's concentration declines as a consequence of the water flux. Based on theoretical simulations and field observations, this study indicates that for low-permeability, yet highly porous fractured formations, the common practice of excluding the effect of diffusive mass flux between the dissolved tracer within the borehole and the surrounding matrix may lead to significant errors in the assessment of the Darcy velocity. This conclusion was confirmed by a model adapted to simulate experimental data collected from a tracer test performed in a vertical, large-diameter (25-cm) borehole drilled along a subvertical fracture intersecting a chalk formation.  相似文献

The precipitation patterns of 6 keV protons at 10° and 80° pitch angles have been mapped at altitudes <1500 km from the ESRO 1A and 1B spacecraft. Equatorward of the trapping boundary, a region of isotropic precipitation, bounded on its equatorward border by a region of anisotropic (depleted loss cone) precipitation, is always observed. The latitudinal location of this transition appears to be nearly spatially coincident with the plasmapause. Similar precipitation patterns are shown to exist for higher energy protons. The general absence of enhanced precipitation at the plasmapause suggests that the inner boundary of the ring current is not usually produced by an enhanced proton pitch angle diffusion process. The isotropic precipitation observed beyond the plasmapause is most consistent with the occurence of an electrostatic instability throughout the ring current zone. It is doubtful whether the proposed cold Li plasma seeding experiments beyond the plasmapause could significantly increase the observed natural proton precipitation rates.  相似文献

This brief overview will cover some recent work on solar system ices. The focus is on the origin, physical properties, composition, and radiation-induced chemistry of ices dominated by water, with an emphasis on comets and water-rich ices on satellites such as Europa. Understanding the physical characteristics and chemistry of these ices is important for explaining observations such as the albedo and sublimation of ice from planetesimals and comets, the formation of molecules that may have led to life, and planning present and future space missions. Mafic and ultramafic intrusions in East Greenland adjacent to the offshore Greenland–Iceland ridge were emplaced 5–9 My after continental breakup at 55 Ma [1]. Rare earth element (REE) concentrations determined by secondary ion mass spectrometry are reported for cumulus clinopyroxene from these intrusions, and the data are used to estimate REE abundance in equilibrium melts using available partitioning data. Estimated equilibrium melts from intrusions have strongly fractionated REE patterns with Nd/Dy(N) in the range 2 to 5.6 and Yb/Dy(N) 0.55 to 0.92, similar to values for coeval basalts. These melts have markedly higher Nd/Dy(N) than earlier breakup related flood basalts. The moderately low Yb/Dy(N) for the post-breakup volcanism is indicative of residual garnet in the source, while their high Nd/Dy(N) ratios can best be explained by aggregating low degree melts from a light-REE-enriched garnet- and spinel-bearing mantle source. We also report He, Sr, and Nd isotopic data for the intrusions. The highest 3He/4He ratios (>10 R/Ra) are found in the samples whose REE data reflect the largest proportion of melts from a garnet-bearing source, and having Sr and Nd isotopic compositions identical with the radiogenic Sr and unradiogenic Nd isotope end of the Iceland compositional field. There is no indication of a MORB-type mantle in the source of the intrusions. We postulate that post-breakup volcanism along the East Greenland coastline reflects the increasing proximity of the mantle plume to the East Greenland continental margin. The low degree of melting at high mean pressure inferred for the parental melts for the intrusions may reflect re-thickening of the lithosphere, which in turn was caused by the vigorous volcanism during breakup, with accompanying depletion of upper mantle and underplating of the crust at the continental margin.  相似文献

Using new laboratory spectra, we have calculated the real and imaginary parts of the index of refraction of amorphous and crystalline H2O-ice from 20 to 150 K in the frequency range 9000-3800 cm−1 (1.1-2.6 μm) at a spectral resolution of 1 cm−1. These optical constants can be used to create model spectra for comparison to spectra from Solar System objects. We also analyzed the differences between the amorphous and crystalline H2O-ice spectra, including weakening of bands and shifting of bands to shorter wavelength in amorphous H2O-ice spectra. We have also observed two spectrally distinct phases of amorphous H2O-ice.  相似文献

The 3150-2700 cm-1 (3.17-3.70 microns) range of the spectra of a number of Ar-matrix-isolated PAHs containing excess H atoms (Hn-PAHs) are presented. This region covers features produced by aromatic and aliphatic C-H stretching vibrations as well as overtone and combination bands involving lower lying fundamentals. The aliphatic C-H stretches in molecules of this type having low to modest excess H coverage provide excellent fits to a number of the weak emission features superposed on the plateau between 3080 and 2700 cm-1 (3.25 and 3.7 microns) in the spectra of many planetary nebulae, reflection nebulae, and H II regions. Higher H coverage is implied for a few objects. We compare these results in context with the other suggested identifications of the emission features in the 2950-2700 cm-1 (3.39-3.70 microns) region and briefly discuss their astrophysical implications.  相似文献
