A set of 41 focal mechanisms (1989–2006) from P-wave first polarities is computed from relocated seismic events in the Giudicarie–Lessini region (Southern Alps). Estimated hypocentral depths vary from 3.1 to 20.8 km, for duration magnitudes (MD) in the range 2.7–5.1. Stress and strain inversions are performed for two seismotectonic zones, namely G (Giudicarie) and L (Lessini). This subdivision is supported by geological evidence, seismicity distribution, and focal mechanism types. The available number of data (16 in G, 22 in L) does not make possible any further subdivisions. Seismotectonic zones G and L are undergoing different kinematic regimes: thrust with strike-slip component in G, and strike-slip in L. Principal stress and strain axes in each sub-region show similar orientations. The direction of maximum horizontal compressive stress is roughly perpendicular to the thrust fronts along the Giudicarie Belt in zone G, and compatible with right-lateral strike-slip reactivation of the faults belonging to the Schio-Vicenza system in zone L. On the whole, kinematic regimes and horizontal stress orientations show a good fit with other stress data from focal mechanisms and breakouts and with geodetic strain rate axes.  相似文献

Some statistical properties of the late Pleistocene climatic changes, as inferred from the analysis of the Probability Density Function (PDF) of the deep-sea 18O record, are discussed. Estimates of the probability distribution of the SPECMAP record seem to reveal a bimodal character over the last 600 000 years BP, with a transition to a unimodal distribution for a longer time interval. Based on knowledge of the accuracy of the measurements, we try to remove the arbitrariness of such estimates, and by employing a number of different estimators we show that the major features observed are not affected by the particular method used. Possible dynamic interpretations are discussed. The abruptness of many transitions between the two modes and their symmetric occurrence seem to be significant features of the past climatic changes, which should be reproduced by climate models. The distribution of this indicator is then used to compare the performances of two climate models. Various statistical tests are employed and it is shown that, for a proper determination of the physical significance of such tests, information about the accuracy and reliability of the data must be included. For example, the comparison of two generalized isotopic curves, independently developed, shows a correlation coefficient of the order of 70%; therefore any account of the variance of any particular target curve beyond this level cannot be considered significant. These types of analyses suggest how the standard data evaluation and model validation techniques can be improved when discussing the essential features of observed and simulated dynamical systems.  相似文献

The brightness distribution of the equatorial region of the Sun has been investigated at 2.8 cm with an east-west resolution of 16.1, for the following days: 30 June, 1 July, 3 July and 4 July, 1972. The results confirm the existence of very intense cores inside active regions with typical sizes of the order of 10–30 and brightness temperatures in the range of 105 K, with possible peaks up to 6 × 106 K. The relationship of these features to the H structure is also discussed.  相似文献

We estimate the concentration of gas hydrate and free gas at an area located to the north of the Knipovich Ridge (western Svalbard margin). The method is based on P-wave velocities computed by reflection tomography applied to multicomponent ocean-bottom seismometer data. The tomographic velocity field is fitted to theoretical velocities obtained from a poro-elastic model based on a Biot-type approach (the interaction between the rock frame, gas hydrate and fluid is modelled from first physical principles). We obtain average hydrate concentrations of 7% and maximum free-gas saturations of 0.4% and 9%, depending on the saturation model.  相似文献

This study investigates the stratigraphical sequence of Cocina Cave (Spain) employing and testing for the first time the capability of rare earth elements as markers of human activities in caves. Located in Dos Aguas (Valencian Community, Spain), Cocina Cave is characterized by the presence of several Holocene archaeological deposits from the final Mesolithic to the present day and is a pivotal site for understanding the socio-ecological dynamics of the last hunter-gatherer inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula and the transition to pastoral and agricultural economies in the Western Mediterranean. However, the identification of strata from particular time-periods in the cave is often difficult due to the homogeneity of layers, the poor archaeological record in some strata and the presence of severe disturbance phenomena. The methodological approach of this study consisted of cross-referencing rare earth elements and other chemical markers with the archaeological stratigraphical interpretation, in an attempt to not only support the identification of the anthropic contribution to the formation of Cocina Cave strata, but also to characterize and confirm different natural and occupational episodes, particularly those associated with hunter-gatherer, early agriculturalist, and shepherd activities. Sediments were collected from different excavation areas and analysed for major elements, trace elements, rare earth elements (REE), soil organic matter (SOM) amounts and pH. Multivariate statistics were employed to group samples according to their elemental profile, and these were then compared to the archaeological temporal interpretation. The obtained results showed that REE amount and fractionation geochemical processes were regulated by carbonates, phosphates and pH. The use of REE as markers was particularly useful as their concentrations and their calculated ratios and anomaly distributions were demonstrated to be highly consistent with the archaeological stratigraphical interpretation.  相似文献

Resume L'éruption du 28-3-1983 a été précédée, dans la nuit entre le 27 et 28 Mars, par l'ouverture de fractures sur le flanc sud de l'Etna entre les côtes 2900 et 2300. Ces ruptures correspondent à des failles à rejet surtout vertical et à des fentes. La disposition générale dessine un graben d'orientation N-S à NE-SW, dont la largeur se réduit progressivement de 80 m à environ 25 m au point d'émission des laves, alors que le rejet vertical des failles augmente vers le sud (maximum 1 m 50). En quelques points on a pu noter une légère composante en décrochement. L'extension horizontale provoquée par l'ouverture de ce graben a été estimée à environ 3 m.Ces donnés sont confrontées à celles obtenues par d'autres méthodes et leur interprétation est discutée en rapport avec le mécanisme de l'éruption et les relations entre magmatisme et tectonique.
The Etna eruption of March 28th, 1983 was preceded, during the night between March 27th and 28th, by the opening of fractures on the southern flank of Mt. Etna between 2300 and 2900 meters a.s.l. The fractures are essentially dip-slip faults andfentes. The resulting general pattern is that of a graben oriented from N-S to NE-SW that becomes progressively narrow passing from about 80 m to 25 m in width at the lava flow emission site, while the vertical fault throw increases towards the south reaching there the maximum value of 1.50 m. In a few places it was possible to detect a slight horizontal component of movement. The horizontal opening due to the graben formation has been estimated to be about 3 m in width.These data have then been compared with others obtained using different methods and their interpretation has been discussed in relation to the eruption mechanism and the relationships between magmatism and tectonics.

The paper describes the degradation of the groundwater resources in the Cecina area, where seawater intrusion, B contamination and NO3 pollution are all affecting the heavily exploited Pleistocene aquifer. Over-pumping has brought water levels to about 0 m.a.s.l. as far as about 7 km from the shore line, thereby promoting the seawater intrusion. The intrusion, which is characterized by cation exchange phenomena and Ca–Cl type waters, enters the plain mostly through the shallower horizons. The saline front, which advanced from 0.5 to 1 km in 4 a, has by now reached the foot of the hills to the east of the town, where it is also affecting wells of the local aqueduct. Boron contamination, linked to past discharge of industrial waste transported downstream by the river, reached concentrations as high as 3.5 mg/L in the mid-1980s. Although a decreasing trend is now under way, B content is still close to 1 mg/L. The presence of high NO3, which, together with the seawater intrusion, represents a major issue for groundwater management in the area, is linked to the widespread utilization of fertilizers. Nitrate concentration, which reaches a maximum of about 300 mg/L in the shallow aquifer horizons and then decreases rather regularly with depth, is strongly influenced by precipitation. However, irrigation also contributes significantly to transporting the NO3 contamination to depth, as clearly shown by δ18O data. The severe decline in the quality of the groundwater resource in the Cecina area is further compounded by an overall decrease in water availability in the region of Tuscany, as evidenced by long-term monitoring of precipitation and fluvial discharge.  相似文献

This paper documents a complex sequence of interbedded lapilli-fall, base-surge, and pyroclastic-flow deposits, here named the Monte Guardia sequence, that erupted from volcanic centers in the southern part of Lipari (Aeolian Island Arc). Radiocarbon data from ash-flow tuffs above and below this sequence bracket its eruption between 22,600 and 16,800 years ago. Geologic evidence, however, suggests that this single eruptive cycle had a more restricted duration of years to tens-of-years. The basis for our interpretations comes from data measured at 38 detailed sections located throughout the island. The Monte Guardia sequence rests on a series of lower rhyolitic endogenous domes in the southern part of Lipari and it covers the oldest lavas, lahars, and pyroclastic flows in the north. Only in the northeast part of the island is it covered by younger deposits which there consist of lapilli tuffs and lavas of the Monte Pilato rhyolitic cycle. The deposit ranges in thickness from more than 60 m surrounding the vents in the south to less than a few decimeters at 10 km distance in the north. Throughout most of the island the Monte Guardia sequence overlies a thin andesitic lapilli-fall layer which is a key bed for correlation. This lapilli tuff probably erupted from a volcanic center on another island of the Aeolian Arc (possibly Salina). The principal activity of the Monte Guardia sequence started with an explosion that formed a continuous breccia blanket covering most of the island. Some pumiceous blocks within this breccia are composed of alternating bands of acidic and andesitic composition suggesting that the initiation of pyroclastic activity could have been triggered by magma mixing. Typical Monte Guardia sequence consists of explosive products that grade from magmatic (pumice-fall) to phreatomagmatic (base-surge) character. The eruptive cycle is characterized by a number of energy decreasing megarhythms that start with a lapilli-fall bed and end with a base-surge set that progresses through sand-wave, massive, and planar beds. Isopach maps of the fall and surge deposits indicate that both types were directed to the northwest by prevailing winds. Existing topographic relief was an additional factor that affected the emplacement of surge products. At the end of the cycle andesitic pyroclastic flows and rhyolitic endogenous domes were emplaced above the Monte Guardia deposits near the vent.  相似文献
