A conceptual model of groundwater occurrence was developed for a dike-intruded aquifer system in M??kaha valley, O??ahu, Hawai??i, USA, and used to explain the impacts of water resource development on groundwater levels and streamflow. Time-series analyses were applied to two subsets of daily rainfall, total flow, and baseflow??from the third (1946?C1968) and fourth (1968?C1991) periods of development??to evaluate changes in streamflow response. Autocorrelation, cross-correlation, squared coherency and phase functions were used to estimate the decorrelation lag time, and the correlation length, linearity with frequency, and frequency response delay between rainfall and streamflow. The decorrelation lag time for total flow and baseflow declined by 16?C20?days (d). The correlation length between rainfall and streamflow declined 4?C7?d for total flow and 10?C13?d for baseflow. The squared coherency function indicates an overall decline in linearity between rainfall and total flow across most frequencies. The changes in hydrologic response following increased water-resource development is consistent with a model of groundwater depletion resulting in less groundwater discharge and more induced groundwater recharge. Changes in streamflow response are inconsistent with observed changes in rainfall and imply that streamflow decline is more likely to be the result of groundwater pumping.  相似文献

Breaking Up: Comminution Mechanisms in Sheared Simulated Fault Gouge   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The microstructural state and evolution of fault gouge has important implications for the mechanical behaviour, and hence the seismic slip potential of faults. We use 3D discrete element (DEM) simulations to investigate the fragmentation processes operating in fault gouge during shear. Our granular fault gouge models consist of aggregate grains, each composed of several thousand spherical particles stuck together with breakable elastic bonds. The aggregate grains are confined between two blocks of solid material and sheared under a given normal stress. During shear, the grains can fragment in a somewhat realistic way leading to an evolution of grain size, grain shape and overall texture. The ‘breaking up’ of the fault gouge is driven by two distinct comminution mechanisms: grain abrasion and grain splitting. The relative importance of the two mechanisms depends on applied normal stress, boundary wall roughness and accumulated shear strain. If normal stress is sufficiently high, grain splitting contributes significantly to comminution, particularly in the initial stages of the simulations. In contrast, grain abrasion is the dominant mechanism operating in simulations carried out at lower normal stress and is also the main fragmentation mechanism during the later stages of all simulations. Rough boundaries promote relatively more grain splitting whereas smooth boundaries favor grain abrasion. Grain splitting (plus accompanying abrasion) appears to be an efficient mechanism for reducing the mean grain size of the gouge debris and leads rapidly to a power law size distribution with an exponent that increases with strain. Grain abrasion (acting alone) is an effective way to generate excess fine grains and leads to a bimodal distribution of grain sizes. We suggest that these two distinct mechanisms would operate at different stages of a fault’s history. The resulting distributions in grain size and grain shape may significantly affect frictional strength and stability. Our results therefore have implications for the earthquake potential of seismically active faults with accumulations of gouge. They may also be relevant to the susceptibility of rockslides since non-cohesive basal shear zones will evolve in a similar way and potentially control the dynamics of the slide.  相似文献

Stress mapping is a numerical modelling technique used to determine the distribution and relative magnitude of stress during deformation in a mineralised terrane. It is based on the general principle that fluid flow in the Earth's crust is primarily related to pressure gradients. It is best applied to epigenetic hydrothermal mineral deposits, where fluid flow and fluid flux are enhanced in dilational sections of structures and in sites of enhanced rock permeability due to high fracture density. These are defined by sites of low minimum principal stress (σ3). Most stress mapping is carried out in two dimensions in plan view using geological maps. This is suitable for terranes with steeply dipping lithostratigraphy and structures in which the distribution of mineral deposits is largely controlled by fault structures portrayed on the maps. However, for terranes with gently dipping sequences and structures, and for situations where deposits are sited in and near the hinges of complex fold structures, stress mapping in cross‐section is preferable. The effectiveness of stress mapping is maximised if mineralisation was late in the evolutionary history of the host terrane, and hence the structural geometry of the terrane and contained deposits were essentially that expressed today. The orientation of syn‐mineralisation far‐field stresses must also be inferred. Two examples of orogenic gold deposits, which meet the above criteria, are used to illustrate the potential of stress mapping in cross‐section. Sunrise Dam, located in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton, is a lode‐gold deposit sited in a thrust‐fold belt. Stress mapping illustrates the heterogeneity of stress distribution in the complex structural geometry of the deposit, and predicts the preferential siting of ore zones around the intersections of more steeply dipping, linking thrusts and banded iron‐formation units, and below the controlling more gently dipping basal thrust, the Sunrise Shear. The Howley Anticline in the Pine Creek block hosts several Palaeoproterozoic gold deposits, sited in complex anticlinal structures in greywacke sequences. Stress mapping indicates that gold ores should develop in the hinge zones of symmetrical anticlines, in the hinge zones and more steeply dipping to overturned limbs of asymmetric anticlines, and in and around thrusts in both anticlines and parasitic synclines. The strong correlation between the predictions of the stress mapping, based on the distribution of low σ3, and the location of gold ores emphasises the potential of stress mapping in cross‐section, not only as an exploration tool for the discovery of additional resources or deposits, but also as a test of geological models. Knowledge of the potential siting of gold ores and their probable orientations also provides a guide to drilling strategies in both mine‐ and regional‐scale exploration.  相似文献

Sedimentological investigations were carried out in the basal clastic rocks of the Brenner Mesozoic in the Stubai Alps. These are Scythian in age and metamorphosed to a greenschist grade. The increase of temperature and pressure from north to south allows the metamorphic effects on Sedimentological features to be gradually traced into higher grade metamorphic areas. The use of various laboratory methods as well as profiling with lithofacies types shows the limitation of using only single methods in sediments suffering thermal and deformational overprint. Only a combined application of different methods allows the extraction of useful sedimentological information. Based on the results of these investigations, a fan delta to shelf succession is proposed for the basal clastic rocks. Petrographic analyses show the relation of the sediments to an underlying weathering horizon.  相似文献

Petrogenesis of garnet lherzolite, Cima di Gagnone, Lepontine Alps   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
Garnet lherzolite at Cima di Gagnone has chemical and mineralogical properties similar to those of other garnet lherzolites in the lower Pennine Adula/Cima Lunga Nappe (Alpe Arami, Monte Duria). The Cima di Gagnone occurrence encloses mafic boudins that belong to an eclogite-metarodingite suite common in the numerous neighboring ultramafic lenses. The ultramafic rocks at Cima di Gagnone, including the garnet lherzolite, are interpreted as tectonic fragments of an originally larger lherzolite body that underwent at least partial serpentinization prior to regional metamorphism. This lherzolite body cycled through at least three metamorphic facies: greenschist or blue-schist (as antigorite serpentinite) → eclogite (as garnet lherzolite), pre-Alpine or early Alpine → amphibolite facies (as chlorite-enstatite-tremolite peridotite), Lepontine metamorphism. Relics of titanoclinohumite in the garnet peridotite, as also recorded by Möckel near Alpe Arami, are consistent with this metamorphic history, since they indicate a possible connection with Pennine antigorite serpentinites, e.g., Liguria, Piedmont, Zermatt-Saas, Malenco, Pustertal, all of which have widespread titanoclinohumite belonging to the antigorite paragenesis. Estimated pressures in excess of 20 kbar and temperatures of 800°±50°C for the garnet lherzolite assemblage are not inconsistent with conditions inferred for Gagnone and Arami eclogites. These conditions could have been reached during deep subduction zone metamorphism. It is shown by calculation that the effects of Fe and Cr on the location of the garnet lherzolite/spinel lherzolite phase boundary largely counter-balance each other.  相似文献

For the first time the origin of the Alpine Buntsandstein (Scythian) in the western part of the Northern Calcarous Alps is outlined by lithofacies types and their relations. The eastern realm of Tyrol seemed to be interesting because of the transition from the terrestric-fluviatile facies of the Alpine Buntsandstein to the marine Werfen beds and the marine influence on the Alpine Buntsandstein. Lithology and sedimentary petrology enable a classification as redcoloured Lower Buntsandstein and white and grey Upper Buntsandstein. Analyses of sedimentary structures, lithofacies types and paleocurrent directions show, that most of the Lower Buntsandstein is composed of sandstones of a braided fluvial system, whose uppermost part ist replaced by sediments of a coastal plain only in the eastern part of Tyrol. Marginal marine influence is testified by sporadic occurrence of gypsum, increased carbonate content, bimodal current directions and trace fossils (Diplocraterion). Fluviatile sedimentation of the Upper Buntsandstein, starting above, is rapidly suppressed by transgression of the »Werfen Sea« from E to W, resulting in the development of estuaries, lastly being replaced by the marine Werfen beds.  相似文献

Analyses for major, minor, and trace element contents of metamorphosed, variably rodingitized mafic rocks demonstrate substantial removal of Na and as much as three-fold gains in Ca as a consequence of rodingitization. Modest declines in Si and Fe can be explained in terms of dilution effects. Losses in K and Ba do not correlate with Ca% and may have been caused by an alteration process not related to the rodingitization. The Ca-metasomatism was not accompanied by a gain in Sr. The relative contents of Ti, Zr, Hf, Y, Co, Sc, and heavy REE show no readily detectable changes, despite the rodingitization (±other alteration) and subsequent metamorphisms, namely, eclogite facies (T800° C, P 20kbar) followed by amphibolite facies, sillimanite zone. Protoliths were tholeiitic basalt or diabase, and gabbro, with trace element contents indicative of a spreading center origin. Trace element and REE patterns indicate low-pressure fractionation of this magma, with plagioclase stable. This petrogenesis is consistent with prior conclusions on the shallow crustal origin of the protolith of the eclogite-metarodingite-garnet lherzolite suite in the Cima Lunga-Adula nappe, Central Alps. Based on their bulk chemical composition, the mafic rocks in this suite could be the equivalent of Mesozoic ophiolitic rocks in the more external parts of the Alps.  相似文献

The paper describes the construction of a long-term storage for critical waste. The base impermeability layer consisted of natural clay, whereby an additional 130,000 m3 of clay were placed on the existing 70,000 m2 clay stratum. Solid inclusions of halite and sylvite, formed during regional and contact metamorphism have been identified by microscopy and by electron microprobe analysis in rocks from Campolungo, Switzerland and Cornone di Blumone, Italy. The solid inclusions occur in several of the major minerals crystallized during metamorphism and have been observed as idiomorphic crystals and dendrites. The compositions measured in 100 analyses from Campolungo, Switzerland and 40 analyses from Cornone di Blumone, Italy extend across the two-phase region in the system, KCl-NaCl, indicating that the salt inclusions are high temperature precipitates. In both localities compositionally zoned and unzoned crystals have been found. Measured compositions on the temperature maximum of the two-phase region indicate at least 500° C which can be compared with 500°±20° C determined by Mercolli (1982) and Walther (1983) from the Mg content of calcites from Campolungo. The solid inclusions have been trapped apart from CO2-rich and saline, H2O-rich fluid inclusions which have been described by Mercolli (1982) as the earliest preserved fluid inclusions in the rocks. The early precipitation of salt minerals at Campolungo indicates that fluids were saturated with NaCl and KCl at 500° C and pressures of 2,000 bars or higher. Similar relationships exist between solid and fluid inclusions in the rocks of Cornone di Blumone which formed at temperatures as high as 800° C and pressures between 0.5 and 1 kilobar (Ulmer 1983). The entrapment of halite and sylvite as solid inclusions preserves the composition of the minerals which may therefore be useful as geothermometers.  相似文献
