A potential zircon reference material (BB zircon) for laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) U‐Pb geochronology and Hf isotope geochemistry is described. A batch of twenty zircon megacrysts (0.5–1.5 cm3) from Sri Lanka was studied. Within‐grain rare earth element (REE) compositions are largely homogeneous, albeit with some variation seen between fractured and homogeneous domains. Excluding fractured cathodoluminescence bright domains, the variation in U content for all analysed crystals ranged from 227 to 368 μg g?1 and the average Th/U ratios were between 0.20 and 0.47. The Hf isotope composition (0.56–0.84 g/100 g Hf) is homogeneous within and between the grains – mean 176Hf/177Hf of 0.281674 ± 0.000018 (2s). The calculated alpha dose of 0.59 × 1018 g?1 for a number of BB grains falls within the trend of previously studied, untreated zircon samples from Sri Lanka. Aliquots of the same crystal (analysed by ID‐TIMS in four different laboratories) gave consistent U‐Pb ages with excellent measurement reproducibility (0.1–0.4% RSD). Interlaboratory assessment (by LA‐ICP‐MS) from individual crystals returned results that are within uncertainty equivalent to the TIMS ages. Finally, we report on within‐ and between‐grain homogeneity of the oxygen isotope systematic of four BB crystals (13.16‰ VSMOW). 相似文献

The objective of the present study is to assess the influence of iron ore mining on Fe concentrations in fluvial sediments of the Gualaxo do Norte River basin (Minas Gerais State, Brazil). Initially background values were determined for Fe by means of the boxplot representation, the iterative 2σ technique and the calculated distribution function, using geochemical data obtained for alluvial terraces. Geochronologic analyses in carbonaceous materials attested for the proposed background values. After that, chemical analyses of active drainage sediments collected along the entire basin were carried out and a geochemical map of the study area was prepared. The mean background value for Fe is relatively high (8.2 wt %), when compared to the Fe concentration in the Earth’s crust (5.6 wt %). Such background value is strongly associated with the geological characteristics of the region. It was observed that most of the high Fe concentrations were detected in active sediments collected in the main river of the basin and not in its tributaries. This suggests that Fe enrichment is not only linked to the local geology but also to possible increase resulting from accidental leakage of iron ore mining tailings from containment dams and lakes upstream. It is suggested that measures that help stop or minimize such impact be adopted. The large capacity of Fe to adsorb and form complexes with toxic metals implicates in environmental hazards that may not be restricted only to the Gualaxo do Norte river basin, but may affect the other basins downstream. 相似文献

The MRT pulsar observing system set-up in July 1996 has been used to observe about 30 pulsars at our low observing frequency
of 150MHz. From the data considered so far, we have detected 10 pulsars, including the bright millisecond pulsar (MSP) J0437-4715.
This is the only MSP observable at such a low frequency making its study specially interesting and more so that it has some
apparently unusual properties. In this paper, we discuss some of our main results obtained on the MSP J0437-4715 and on the
‘core-single’ normal pulsarsJ1453-6413 and J1752-2806. Our results are also compared with those obtained at other frequencies.
This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date. 相似文献

This paper describes the geochemistry of sediment samples placed in floodplains and alluvial terraces downstream from gold mines in the Carmo River basin, Quadrilátero Ferrífero, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The geochemistry signature Na2O, K2O, SiO2, CaO, MgO, Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, P2O5, Mn, As, Cu, Zn, Ba, Ni, Cr, S, Co were analyzed in different facies from stratigraphic profiles. As, Cu, Zn, and Mn anomalies are mainly associated with the clayed facies deposited in floodplains and oxbow lakes, and with coarse‐sediment facies deposited in the channel. The facies were accumulated by the gold exploitation activity in the region. The contamination of As, Cu, and Zn was controlled by minerals such as iron oxides and hydroxides (hematite, magnetite, and mainly goethite), manganese oxides, and sulfide‐rich minerals. The As‐bearing sediments of the region characterize one of the most As contaminated area of Brazil. Their main source is associated with gold exploration in the last three centuries. 相似文献

The present work quantifies the erosive processes in the two main substrates (schists–phyllites and granites–gneisses) of the upper Maracujá Basin in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero/MG, Brazil, a region of semi‐humid tropical climate. Two measuring methods of concentration were used: (i) in situ produced 10Be in quartz veins (surface erosion rates) and (ii) 10Be in fluvial sediments (basin erosion rates). The results confirm that (i) erosion tends to be more aggressive close to the headwaters than in the lower parts of the basin and (ii) the region is now affected by dissection. Disturbance is an important factor influencing plant species composition and diversity. We addressed changes in plant composition
and soil characteristics in Estero de Punta Banda, Baja California, Mexico following 22 years of disturbance by tidal exclusion.
Currently, sediments in the non-tidal site are dry, 26 ± 1% moisture, and hypersaline, 143 ± 12; while those at the tidal
marsh are wet, 36.2 ± 1% moisture, with 40.3 ± 2.6 salinity. The non-tidal site has lost seven species including annuals,
short- and long-lived perennials, ephemerals, and parasites. Current dominants are the perennials Batis maritima and Sarcocornia pacifica. Average species richness at the non-tidal site is 4.4 ± 0.32 vs.10 ± 0.18 species per square meter at the tidal site. Average
species diversity index is lower at the diked area. The general biodiversity loss that results from tidal exclusion in arid
estuaries, contrasts with the species-rich communities that develop in diked humid-climate estuaries. 相似文献

Ouro Preto county is south-east of Quadrilatero Ferrifero in the state of Minas Gerais, one of the most known Brazilian mining regions, producing gold, topaz gems and several kinds of iron and manganese ores. However, these activities are the main forms of environmental degradation, affecting the surface and groundwater which is used for public supply and are the source of heavy metal contamination, including mercury and arsenic. The mining and predatory prospecting activity (garimpos) has been carried out in Minas Gerais since the seventeenth century. At that time, hundreds of placer gold deposits were discovered on the streams in the region of Ouro Preto and Mariana, causing the first big gold rush in Brazilian history. This work presents public supply water quality data from a seasonal cycle, from September 1999 (winter) to February 2000 (summer). Chemical and physical-chemical parameters were assessed with the content of heavy metals. Leaching tests with rock samples to assess contribution to the metal content of water were carried out. Elements in the rocks have been determined and water analysis allowed the hydrogeochemical classification of water. Leaching tests demonstrate the oxidizing conditions under which the As (and the other elements) is being mobilised to the hydrological system. As and Fe are elements dispersed in the drainage of the regions. This is due to the high amounts of sulfide and to the iron formations of the region. 相似文献

This paper investigates the denudation rates in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, Minas Gerais State (Brazil). The aim is to compare chemical weathering rates from measurements of solute fluxes in rivers and long-term mean erosion rates deduced from in situ-produced cosmogenic 10Be concentrations measured in fluvial sediments. Both water samples and sediments were collected in fifteen stations (checkpoints) located in four hydrographic basins with low anthropogenic perturbations.Depending of the type of substratum, three degrees of chemical denudation rates from water samples are observed: (i) high rates in marbles; (ii) medium rates in schists, phyllites, granites, gneisses and migmatites; (iii) low rates in quartzites and itabirites. Preliminary results of long-term erosion rates deduced from in situ-produced 10Be are comparable with those of chemical rates. 相似文献

Response of Strata and Buildings to Blast Induced Vibrations in the Presence and Absence of a Tunnel
Nalini E. Rebello R. Shivashankar V. R. Sastry 《Geotechnical and Geological Engineering》2016,34(4):1013-1028
Blast induced vibrations form an inevitable and major part of modern day construction. The changes that happen to the strata or buildings surrounding the blast are evident in a fraction of a second. Effect of damage is more pronounced in the absence/presence of the tunnel. The vibration produced due to blast may be induced due to a deep underground explosion, a surface explosion or even an in-tunnel explosion. In this study the above three situations are numerically modeled by a Distinct Element software 3DEC (3.0). Soil properties are varied representing soft and stiff strata. Further, three velocity time histories of 2, 45 and 85 Hz are used as an input in the model and are applied at three different boundaries of the model. Results of the analysis reveal that the response of building in softer strata and lower frequencies led to greater magnification of velocities and displacements compared to response of buildings in stiff strata. Presence of the tunnel led to reduction of peak velocity (PV’s) and displacements at the building top due to damping effect. PV’s at the top floor were greater than the PV’s at the bottom floor and there was an upliftment of the soil mass at the ground level. However, the upliftment in the presence of the building was lower than the upliftment in the absence of the building. Stress in the tunnel lining increased in the presence of the building, however percentage reduction of stress depends on the number of building stories. 相似文献

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the natural degradation of the leachate organic fraction from the Belo Horizonte landfill on groundwater chemical evolution. The work focused on the modifications introduced by redox reactions in the presence of terminal electron acceptors. Twenty-one sampling points distributed along 13 monitoring wells were selected for the analysis of the chemical indicators of interest (TDS, SO 4 ?2 , Fe+2, Ba, pH and Eh). The behaviour of the variables involved in the alteration of the water quality was assessed by the spatial distribution of target parameters, elaboration of redox diagrams and chemical modelling that focused on the determination of mineral saturation indexes. The study showed a trend toward pyrite precipitation, which leads to the removal of chemical species such as divalent iron and sulphur as sulphide from the system. This removal disturbs the chemical equilibrium, typically by moving the reactions to replenish the sulphate concentration present in the groundwater. This process occurs primarily through the dissolution of compounds that have sulphate in their chemical composition, such as barite, suggesting that part of the barium concentration in the subsurface can be of geogenic origin. This study demonstrated the importance of knowing the nature of the geochemical processes in groundwater contaminated by urban solid waste. 相似文献
